SpeedsterX 751
Canadians, what's the truth? Is it everything you hope it could be or do you wish you had something else? (I know we had a thread years ago about this but can't find it). With Obamacare being reeled back just wondering what the real deal is with National Healthcare. Here's a video and it doesn't sound to great. Took the wife to the ER for a neck pain the other day and we were in and out after blood work, Dr checkup, x-rays and leaving with prescription in hand in about 2 hours. Jim2Dokes 3
The fact that you were in and out in 2 hrs is probably due to the specific hospital and area you live in. The fact you did not have at least a $3000 dollar bill is due to your insurance. Even with ironclad insurance some hospitals overcharge for 10s of thousands and can get away with it. Of course these hospitals are also not Medicare credentialed which would mean in Canada that is not allowed. Hospitals that are not cred with the govt in us can charge whatever they please, the insurance won't cover you they expect you to.Most do not have your experience but I can not give an accurate picture of Canada's healthcare, maybe Rocket can weigh in. Rocketsan 868
we have Emergency rooms, you'll wait forever there... but be taken care of... we also have something called Urgent Care which offers pretty much all the same services, you'll wait a couple hours but get everything you need in one stop. I'll look at that video when I'm home tomorrow. I've had some pretty serious issues with kidney stones resulting in several surgeries. We don't pay a dime. PJacksonsDred15 121
Offering the public a public option insurance plan would likely drive insurance and health care costs down without having to nationalize the entire industry. Best of both worlds if you ask me.
coltssb 1,121
Isn't the main problem for Canadians is the wait they have to endure for surgery hats needed? At least that's what I've been told from Canadians that have come to our facility wanting back surgery. As for the ER, it's usually a 5 hour wait I thought. Seems pretty normal unless you claim of chest pain or something more life threatening. Hell, I even had to wait 5 hours at the hospital I worked at for five hours till I ended up leaving. Then still got some minor bills for xray and such.

PJacksonsDred15 121
Don't we already have this with medicare/medicaid? No. Medicaid draws from taxpayer funds and is only available to the poorest of the poor. Public option would only draw funds from those that decide to pay in and would be available to anyone
ObieKnobbe 47
Why not just let free market rule health insurance? I think if they let health insurance companies go national there will be much more competition in the marketplace similar to car insurance. There some of the biggest companies in the us. However they are only a small percentage of the problem, as this has been highlighted in other threads hospitals and drug companies are charging obscene amount seeing if the insurance company will flinch. It's a game, it goes back and forth. Leaving you with a giant bill. Until there are serious regulations, it will never get better.

It's a game, it goes back and forth. Leaving you with a giant bill. Until there are serious regulations, it will never get better. Most health insurance companies (not all) are present in most states (not all). Each state has its own regulatory agency for insurance. Each state imposes certain rules on how insurance companies do business in that particular state, often including, to a degree, what rates the insurance companies may charge. When a health insurance company seeks rate increases in a state for instance, it has to have those approved through the state insurance regulatory agency. States may regulate what must be included in health insurance coverage for an insurer to do business in that state. The pharmaceutical industry is one of the very largest drivers of insurance costs in this country. It's sad that we can buy drugs from Canada at a fraction of the cost of what the drugs cost here in the US. The Canadian health system receives high marks from Canadian citizens. There are certainly drawbacks, however. For instance, if you have prostate cancer and are over 70, you won't be able to receive aggressive surgical therapy. It isn't cost-effective. In the US you can receive aggressive surgical therapy. If a province in Canada budgets X dollars for orthopedic surgical services for a calendar year, if those dollars are used up by September, then good luck getting that hip replacement in October (happened in British Columbia a few years ago; they ran out of orthopedic dollars so shut down orthopedic services until January of the following year).
