Either way no Tranquil

You've been around long enough to know that using just a players name in the title means something bad has happened. Don't do that to us. We are still very fragile. I like nico as well. He dont have a high ceiling but he brings toughness and is not afraid to collide with someone.. If we can't get elite talent then perhaps we should get good kids who just may lack the ideal size but have plenty of heart.

Maybe it's not his fault because he got so much hype on here, but he's been awful his entire career. There's a reason he was previously a Purdue commit. Then only worse Safety I've seen was Collinsworth, who could have been juked out by his old man.

hawaiiirish 62
Not sold on Nico yet sorry, Tranquil like NEARLY EVERYONE on the defense has had sketchy moments--- In any case I expect him to start somewhere given our experience and roster... Good chance IMO a NEW DC can get much more out of Tranquil as well as quite a few others---I recommend a wait and see approach here..... aloha

I wanna view drew as a 6-1.5 225 pound OLB/DE Nicco is listed at 5-8.5 and 185 I think that makes Drue 4 inches taller and 40 pounds heavier I like Nicco but I can't move him in the box like I probably can Drue. That said Nicco hits hard, so just for that needs to find more minutes on the field. Edited January 22, 2017 by FaithInIrishForever

ndomer4 532
This thread is kinda depressing as I don't think we have any good safeties on the roster. The defence was bad last year, and Elko will help but we might be 2 or 3 years from being elite. I do like the personnel again just not at safety. Getting Watkins and Crawford back will help so much, starting to wonder if either Pride, Vaughn or Love could make the move to safety. Personally I saw nothing from Morgan, Perry, Studsill, Tranquill and Fertitta to think they can be the guys at safety. They're all young so there is potential but we had to have some of the worst safety play in the country last year. Some of the angles.... Smh. Why would any offensive coordinator use an alignment to put Tranquil in the box when he can put him in a situation where Tranquil has to cover a slot receiver? Picking on Tranquil in coverage is like shooting fish in a barrel. If I have to have a choice between a larger slow safety and a faster undersized one, I'll take the guy with the speed. It's a longer slog to beat teams patiently running inside. When you can get 15+ yards picking on a safety in short passes that become long gains it's much easier to score quickly. Domer Dude 0
The annual pick on our safeties thread. D.T. is the best leader we probably have on D and I want him on the field. He has an off-season to get his speed back from his injury and another year will let the game slow down for him mentally. He leads by example and attitude and doesn't let the situation get him down on and off the field. Kids with his attitude turn teams into winners despite the team's limitations on paper. Go D.T. and Go Irish and $uck the football world. Edited January 22, 2017 by Domer Dude

I want Drue to play outside linebacker, not safety. I think Elko can get 3 or 4 sacks out of him in speed rush situations. I don't see DRUE as a cover guy. Nicco, 5-8 puts you at a big disadvantage when it comes to covering tight ends, but you could match him up against slot types and be ok. Every year we hear about these new wrinkles only to get the same old same. When drue tries to tackle he drops to his knees first and waits for impact. In many cases the runner cuts around him and he's flailing for am arm tackle. I recall having slaughter being talked about playing in the box. He can't be much bigger then nico. Its hard because linebackers play coverage too. But he's on scholarship so the coaches need to use his best skills even in a part time role. He's a captain, so that's one way he's being utilized for leadership. I hope Elko can refine his skills so he tackles better and can help on the field. But he's a player that won't disappear, cause he's very high character. I look for him to bounce back. Look for Nicco to make some plays too.. coltssb 1,125
It's the sophomore/junior jinx with our safeties. They play amazing their first year, then go into hibernation the next two years. They usually play ok their last year or "5th" years.

golson5 221
Tranquil was never amazing. He had one good game against navy. That's perfect for his skill set. He should not be on the field as a safety against anyone else. Maybe lb but never safety

He absolutely does not hit harder than Fertita. And Who cares if he hits hard when he misses most of his tackles. This guy should never have been offered a scholarship and what's worse is the people slurping him up despite 3 below average seasons. The guy who is missing all the tackles is the leading solo tackler on the team and second in total tackles. Maybe it is because he is a baller and getting himself into position to make the tackles more than others. Baldy 1,725
I'm excited to see what Fertita can do as a starter. And doesn't he have to sit out the first half of the Temple game because of the targeting against USC?
