Franco
http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/18370015/alabama-crimson-tide-coach-nick-saban-adapted-conquered-new-style-college-football Just some choice quotes: " 'It's unbelievable how much the game has changed, and it's really hard to coach defense now. But hey, it's on me -- regardless of the way I think football should be played -- if I don't change with it' " "Saban's now-famous line from 2012: 'Is this what we want football to be?' ...But while Saban might be old school and might have strong convictions about the direction of the game, the one thing he's not is stubborn. He's smart enough to know that nothing stays the same, especially when you're in the business of chasing championships." We've made some good changes, so it does look like someone is finally dragging Kelly kicking and screaming into the current state of college football
corysold
That helps, but I'm pretty sure the 6 straight number one recruiting classes is what makes Alabama successful. For whatever reason, Saban has been able to recruit the best players in the nation to Alabama. He's one of the best coaches. Best players + great coach = multiple titles. We can all agree Kelly isn't an elite coach, but when he had a team with a bunch of NFL players on it, he went to the title game. Saban is great, but it wasn't like he was unbeatable everywhere he has gone. He was only 34-24 at Michigan St. Only won 10 games twice in 5 years at LSU. Couldn't win with the Dolphins. Now at Alabama he has created a monster than feeds on itself in the heart of prime recruiting land. Every game, he rolls out the better team. hawaiiirish
On thing we all should see by watching Alabama is this--- QB is a critical position BUT in college what makes teams championship caliber is the DLINE and front 7 Alabama has had MERDIOCRE QBs through all their success--- What they have had is WITHOUT COMPARE THE BEST DRFENSIVE FRONTS IN COLLEGE!!! Its very hard to win big and consistently with ONLY offense no matter how productive. This is a problem we will have great difficulty overcoming---DLINE is notoriously HARD to recruit at ND.... When we had a very strong front in 2012 with TEO backing up Tuitt/Nix/Lynch/KLM---- the results spoke for themselves If we can't bring in GREAT DLINEMAN---unfortunately we can't be a great team aloha
nd1baby
Saban loves recruiting. Assistant coaches day starts at 7:30. Kiffin said 3 years there was like 21 years. Commitment.
davislove
Outside of a few SEC and bowl games. Bama has a weak schedule. They are up by 40 at half and can get their backups plenty of experience. And their starters stay fresh. All that plays into being a great program. I wish kelly just didn't run the ball and burn the clock when he brings in reserves. I have more of an issue about Kelly not being up by 40 at half (or whatever) to allow him to play reserves

Best players + great coach = multiple titles. That pretty much is the whole thing in a nutshell. The road to NC's start on the recruiting trail. When you have a collection of that much talent, who then play every game like they're fighting for a roster position, you get tremendous results. davislove
Opened this thread expecting to see shots of players accepting wads of cash... I wonder if paying kids is really a thing these days. The way these kids tweet these days, it would have came out. That said, i don't believe those kids are passing classes on their own.
Donjuan
I think Saban has a little Belicheck in him. They're always ahead of the game when it comes to gray areas. Eligible tackles catching TDs? Check. Using inactive NFL players on the practice squad? Check. Picking up free agents with no intention of playing them to better your draft status? Check. Recruiting too many players knowing almost a third of them can't suit up for you? Check. Using substitution to fool the defense? Check. Hiring analysts that don't count against your coaching total? Check. I could go on all day but these two coaches use their competitive creativity to skirt the rules and probably win games because of it. Yes, I know Bama has superior talent to most if not all, but this is why America hates/respects both of these coaches. Win at all costs. Hell, let a little air out of the ball every now and then. Just win. Deer Antler Spray will appreciate the spike in business because of your winning.

Why was he only a great coach at the two schools he could get top tier talent and was average at the two places where he had to win with less talent than his opponents? Plenty of coaches are more innovative than Saban and skirt the rules just as much. A NFL draft scout said on the radio the other day that as of now, Alabama has 6 of the top 23 draft eligible players. That is ridiculous. Yes, part of that is player development, but most of it is starting with the best raw ability. Kudos to him for cracking the recruiting code. edcubby
Saban and Belicheck are very similar...they have a singular mind set...win! And win big due to playing damn near perfect. Belicheck doesn't say "look how great I am because I found Tom Brady in the 6th round. He says "why did we screw up and pass over this guy 5 times." It's this single mindset is why HE FIRED HIS ONCOORDINATOR THE WEEK OF THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!!!! Holy **** is there anyone else who has the balls to do that? I've caught some great quotes from Saban being replayed this week. One reporter after seeing a dust up on the sideline ask Saban "What was the arguement between you and Kifflin about?" Saban responded "That wasn't an argument. That was an *** chewing." Awesome!

VCDomer
We will never be Bama. We just need to be more like ND and less like GVS and Cinci

That said, i don't believe those kids are passing classes on their own. You serious? DJ Fluker admitted he was paid tens of thousands at Bama, and Mark Barron was pretty much pinned to taking money as well. Saban threw a hissy fit when a reporter had the audacity to bring these facts up to him. Very similar to the hissy fit he threw when he was questioned about Cam Robinson getting away with felony gun possession and drug charges this year. Toss in their best pass rusher Timmy Williams getting caught with a gun and weed (which he said was his imaginerary friend "Brandon Chicken's") by campus police this year with no recourse as well. I won't argue that Saban is the greatest coach in college football, but Bama and SEC schools in general play with their own set of rules. It has kind of ruined college football for me...along with ND constantly having nutt punch seasons.
