Jersey Irish 207
Minnesota has just fired its football coach after a 9-4 season and bowl win over Washington State. Speculation is that they will go hard after PJ Fleck and land him. Hope he does what Lou Holtz did when he took the Gopher job. He had a release clause put into his contract if Notre Dame came calling. Can lightning strike twice? Sure hope so.

TheRizz 5
MN isn't a football powerhouse with salaries. They are always going to rank at the bottom half of Big Ten coaching salaries. We will see if Fleck goes...

IRISH812 0
Him going to Minnesota is a good thing if it happens. I don't think he'd turn down ND to remain the coach at Minnesota and this would be a pretty good test to see how he can do at a power 5 school. corysold 0
My thoughts exactly. Yeah, he might be a great coach. But how exactly has the last up and comer from the MAC, who had success at a higher level school, done at ND? Plenty of coaches have gone unbeaten in the MAC. They don't all turn out to be Urban Meyer. In fact, only one has.

If he goes to Minnesota and has a 6 or 7 win season do you still want him? They'll be some other coaach from the fcs becoming the flavor of the month next year. Irish812's point was him taking that job is probably better for him than taking a job like ND. If he somehow turns around Minnesota and makes them a 8-9 win team he might be that guy that can succeed at a place like ND.

I'm saying everyone already has him penciled in as the next savior at ND because he went 13-1 in the MAC this year. He might be. But odds are, he isn't. The point is, you can't ever tell a guy is going to be great at a school until he gets there, then is or isn't. Brian Kelly was unbeaten at Cincy and he has been ok at ND, but not great. Saban was pretty average at Mich. St., now he is considered the greatest of all time. Meyer had a run that would suggest he would do amazing, but plenty of coaches have had similar resumes and flamed out. Just no way to really know until the coach arrives, especially at a school like ND that has so much more to balance than every other school. You'll never know until a coach steps on campus and has a few years of running the program. That is definitely true.

I don't really know what Minnesota has coming back next year or what their schedule looks like. I guess if Kelly is fired after this year it'd still be worth a shot. It'd be nice to study him over the course of 3 or 4 years there, but we may not have that luxury.
Bergy79 0
BR stating its a done deal, either 5 year/$17.5mil or 6 year/$21 mil. Those are the terms showing up, not sure which is correct.
ndomer4 532
Looks like this is done. I could see him turning Minnesota into something similar to what Peterson is doing at UW. Minnesota doesn't have the history, facilities, or fanbase that the Huskies have but I'd compare the programs as Minnesota being a poor man's Washington. I could see Fleck staying at Minny for the rest of his career should he find success. If Fleck is who we think he is I could see one step up at max but with his age and possible firings that could take place within that time we have no clue. I just think people should not throw out the notion he could stay at Minny, you don't see successful coaches jumping from one P5 school to another much at all these days. Do not see him staying there his entire career. Bet my bottom dollar he has an ND out clause built into this new contract.

I just don't see Minnesota as a destination job for almost anybody unless the coach had STRONG connections to the school. It's the perfect stepping stone job for someone like Fleck. If he starts having success there, especially with how young he is, he'll have his pick of high profile jobs to go to when he's ready. corysold 0
Why is it assumed Fleck wants to be at ND so bad? The only thing I've ever heard him say was he'd coach at ND for free. Yeah, so would I. Wasn't there another coach from the MAC who had ND as his dream school? How did that work out? ND is probably a lot of coaches dream school. Then the easy route of "SEC Powerhouse" opens up and ND doesn't look so dreamy anymore.

Also pretty much everything posted in that supposed rumor was false and way out to lunch. I could maybe see him leaving for an OSU, MICH, ND, BAMA, LSU, TENN, OKIE, etc... jobs like that. To be so certain he has an out clause for ND is ludicrous. Look Minnesota is a great city to raise a family and I don't see why he couldn't do what Peterson is doing at Washington. They have descent facilities and the state produces some very good talent on a yearly basis. He won't have trouble getting out of state guys to come to Minny and play for him either. I see no reason to think he can't take Minny above where Wisky and Iowa are and have been.

FaithInIrish Forever 5,570
good if he does well there we can hire him. Sorry wasn't in favor of hiring anyone from the MAC, I like him, but he has to keep proving it.
