Mark Helfrich next OC/QB?

Yeah saw it mentioned on another site. 2 weeks ago I'd say Kelly would not be wise enough to make a great hire like this, but with him hiring Elko who was the overwhelming favorite here I say it is somewhat possible.

He's coached some great qbs and had some very prolific offenses at Oregon. Kelly always says he's outscored people but I've rarely seen him put up over 40 points here, over 50 is like a lunar eclipse.

All the top teams are hanging half a hundred multiple times a year, Clemson, OSU(4), Washington, Bama (3). Also seen 45+ 4 or more times pretty much on all of their schedules.

Kelly has only put up over 50 6 times in 7 years, for an offensive guy that is absolute dogshit. If the sentiment is we can't consistently get the top tier dlinemen then we need to put up points. Play solid funamentals on d, get more turnovers and stops then play special teams. Elko and Polian should help with the defense and ST.

Kelly is better off going back to his hurry up offence and hire a guy like Helfrich who has run it a whole lot better than Kelly and end up teaching him a thing or two about it. If you look at Kelly's past his offences do not generally score many points, and after watching the vanilla crap he runs we all know why.

Helfrich has had some of the best offences in college football. If Kelly really wants to move on he'll let a guy like Helfrich have complete control of the offense and let his elite assistants run the show while he oversees everything, that is our best chance at success next season.

I heard that they were going after the now lsu OC Matt Canada so they might make a run at him. It seems unlikely though because Kellys forte is offense so I don't see in the most important year of his career him handing the entire offense to someone brand new

That would look really bad if Canada left LSU for ND lol

Thing about the 40+ statement, is all of these teams play 2 to 3 nobodies every year. Bama and OS are different, they certainly put up 40+ on teams like ND.

I don't care for Helfrich. And who wants LSUs offense?

Well Clemson did it against SC State, V Tech, Pitt, South Carolina, Louisville, Syracuse and BC. Washington did it against Colorado, ASU, WSU, CAL, OSU, Oregon, Stanford, Idaho, Rutgers and Portland State.

I see about 1 or 2 nobodies for each, alot of teams better than ND and few who are on about the same level. If we're looking at last year and using the term 'teams like ND' it isn't very pretty.

Yeah defenses win championships but college football has become a video game basically. If you don't have a Bama or OSU defense a good offense will put up points on you regardless. It becomes a shootout alot of the time and obviously getting a stop here or there or turnover helps but you need points in bunches and lots of them.

Yeah, not really sold on Helfrich. Notre Dame might be a Spread team, but they still run a more balanced offense. Oregon was great bc they had unreal speed, but when they went up against a tough D (Stanford, OSU), they got smacked.

2016- 3183 passing yards and 2717 rushing yards.

2015- 3358 passing and 3639 rushing.

2014- 4687 passing and 3518 rushing.

If that's not balanced than I don't know what is. Kelly could not sniff these type of numbers in his wildest dreams with his vanilla 3 page playbook. I don't wanna get into the ppg too because they smash us even worse in that category.

Kelly should put his ego aside and learn for a real offensive mastermind because the numbers show he's absolutely average and looks like the division 2 coach he is.

The problem with up tempo offenses is they put a lot of pressure on your defense, especially if they are not clicking, which can lead to a lot of big losses. ND fan base would never tolerate something like (e.g. 55- 28 ) losses. These types of losses are more probable with an offense that keeps your defense on the feild. BK knows this. This is why you won't see it at ND. Oregon came the closest, but I don't recall anyone winning a NC with purely an uptempo attack offense. I think they are ideal, for up coming programs with nothing to lose and trying to maximize what talent they have. Ultimately you need to dial it back. Most programs I see now go uptempo from time to time but it's not their identity.

I say fix the defense and have better play calling, especially in the red zone, and we win 10 fairly regularly....as long as the talent level is sustained
