irishrush 60
This is sarcasm? I wouldn't see that as good news. I think he is great at what he has been doing, but I want a top notch guy brought in.

Kellyisit 0
Of course it's a joke... This whole flippin thing is a joke It really is. The ND football program will be a punchline if a big DC hire isn't made. 4. 4 wins this year. But the answers were on the staff all along... crouchingjedi 0
Keep a close eye on the DC position. It's one of the most visible coordinator positions open, albeit for a potentially lame duck coach. But if BK wanted to, he could probably make a splash with a solid external candidate (even Strong for a year). If he announces a hire from within, this may signal to us that he is on the way out and this is just a place holder (potentially interim HC). I don't think Kelly is gonna hire someone (like Strong for example) that will have the fanbase calling for his head and for (Strong for example) to become the interim after the first loss. Elston make sense for kelly to not be looking over his shoulder.

goirish83 0
I've seen that he's at least being interviewed, with all due respect to Elston kelly has to make a much bigger splash for this hire. In saying that it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if this is where he decided to go

Fair point, but then Kelly is going ALL IN on the concept that the answer to the defense is someone who has been with him for years and he just figured that out now.... (???) Basically this will prove that Kelly isn't even trying to impress anymore.
ELDER06 248
I don't think it's worth panicking over yet. Of course they're going to pay lip service and interview internally.

I'm fine with Kelly going, but if he could somehow hire someone to build him a top 10 defense, I can see this being a good team next year. Plenty of offensive firepower if they can figure out how to stop someone. However, I wouldn't want Strong to be coach at ND if Kelly did poorly. He had his chance at a big time school and didn't do the job, ND needs some fresh blood.

The former coach of the Longhorns is not coming to SB to work as an assistant for a struggling control freak like Brian.

To find out who Kelly will hire, we just need to look through the defensive assistants he had at Grand Valley St. I'm sure that is where the hire is coming from, his "Good 'Ol Boys" club. How often do guys fired from big schools like that take high profile Asst jobs? Chizik, Muschamp are two off the top of my head. Plus, Strong has coached at ND before. It's not totally out of question

Then Elston will bring Diaco's defense back, we'll 3-4 cover 2, cats and dogs etc. That's acceptable to me. I don't want another NFL Guru hire, who has EVER been in the same room as Rex Ryan. I think that extra position should be spent on a Special Teams Coach. Move Booker to the recruiting position. Like you said find a better fundamental defense, yards ok, points not. Thank you for posting Cory, made my day.
Sankee72 0
Strong isn't coming because his huge payout would be cut by more than half per his buyout clause.

We are gonna end up with some guy named John or Bill who has never coached at the D1 level before.
