You can't blame Kelly for everything. This has more to do with him underperforming. You realize scouts get it wrong? Remember Alex Anzalone? Everyone freaked out when he bailed and went to Florida. He's done nothing during his time there.

Little different as Anzalone has been hurt his whole career

How about Shane Morris? Wasn't he the #1 QB in the class of '13? He's the 3rd string QB at Michigan. Point is sometimes kids just aren't as good as the hype, not always the coach's fault

He's a fifth year right? This may be a case of not being asked back.

Lots of people are high on Anazlone right now, actually. I agree with your overall point tho.

Lou Holtz said something like 1/3 of recruits become stars, 1/3 contribute, 1/3 never pan out.

I am guessing that the problem is that you don't know which recruit will fall into which bucket. Sort of like the quote about half of advertising being worthless but not sure which half...

I hope BK isn't showing these kids the door if he's planning to leave. He should let the next coach make that determination. He may need those guys because he didn't get a chance to recruit.

And the problem with BK is that he has no clue of how his staff fall in those same buckets or how to help that 2/3 to be able to improve.

yeah I agree not every 4 or 5-star pan out. but look how many low 4-star and 3-star recruits thrived since BK has been here.

Without a benchmark, we can't know one way or the other. What's been ND's avg rank in classes since BK? Then who are the programs within +/-2 spots in average ranking? Those 4 schools would be a good measure.

Not entirely true. ND has had guys like Fuller, Procise, Stanley, Eifert, Russell do despite being high 3/ low 4.

Kelly should go, but we can't pretend he's been a total unmitigated disaster. He's a pr1ck, but he's done some good things at ND. It's just he's hit his ceiling and given his questionable loyalty, he needs to go

Procise played out of position for 3 years.

Stanley was a top 15 Tackle on some sites.

Russell was the 9th athlete on rivals.

Hell, Fuller was top 20 receiver on rivals.

Prosise, Brown, Okwara, Fuller, Onwualu, Kizer, Tranquill, Cage, Martini, Adams, Coney, Coleman, Finke, Vaughn, Love, Studstill, Stepherson, Jamir Jones.

If you don't want to count the freshman yet fine, but these are all guys under Kelly that have played much better than their projections coming out of HS imo. I'm not super pro Kelly or anything, but I'm also not super anti Kelly either. He has raised the status of many lower 4 star and 3 star guys since becoming NDs coach. I didn't count Eifert since he was recruited under Weis.

EDIT: I missed Kelly's first year. You can also throw in Nick Martin, Farley, McDaniel, Niklas, and Schimdt.

Thank you, well done. I'm with you on my thoughts about kelly too. Just throw in there that Joe Schmidt was a hell of a walk on, and before his injury looked like a really good player.

Yep, should have included him as well. Also, there are plenty of guys like Stanley that although they were already highly regarded played much better than expected. I don't think anyone expected Stanley or Zack Martin to turn into bonafide stud 1st round picks.

That's 14 players from a team just went 4-8. How that's a ringing endorsement of Kelly's ability to develop players?

Obviously you are misunderstanding my point and didn't read my entire post. I stated that these were all lower rated 4 stars or worse that have performed imo, much better than expected. You don't see many 3 stars doing a whole lot at top end universities. Never said I was a crazy BK supporter. Was simply pointing out who out of that specific group of players that has performed better than expected. You can bring up many others if you include the 4 and 5 stars he has brought in.

Some want to excessively bash Kelly any chance they get. I'm simply pointing some positives.

This. There's literally not one poster on this site who is a Brian Kelly fan. However, more rational people can admit he's done some good things. Admitting that doesn't mean we want him to stay.

Tranquill? Lol. The whiff?

Yeah he looked really good before that injury, I think most of us forgot how badly that slowed him down. I remember him running down Ty Montgomery, he played great in that game but we never saw him like that after the injury. Ah 2014 makes me angry!
