How does ND beat Navy?

ND always has trouble stopping or slowing down navy's triple option (except in 2011 and 2012) and this defense struggles stopping the run. then NDs offense can move the ball and score points but their are times during the game were they just disappear for quarters at a time. so how can ND possibly beat navy with all these problems?

IMO on offense you need to run the ball and control the line. I would use the 2013 game plan and put kizer under center with adams at I-back and just run down hill right at navy, then hit them with play action. and when you get inside the 10 yardline don't throw the ball three times and kick a FG, run smash mouth football.

on defense im not sure what you do to slow navy down, ND is going to have to get penetration in the back field and try to blow up the play before it begins.

I'm no D Coordinator but I'd just go man up with the two WRs and commit everyone to stopping the run otherwise. Use Tranquill/Nico Fertitta like they used Matthias Farley and tell Nyles Morgan to just go out there and crack some skulls. Use our big DL to eat up as many blocks as possible, maybe Rochelle/Jones/Tillery as the 3 down.

Stop the dive, and abuse the QB (especially pitch arm) which will lead to a turnover, and don't give up the big play.

If we surrender the dive, the game is over.

My game plan cliff notes

1. Stop the dive 75% of the time to fewer than 3 yards

2. Get 1 or 2 turnovers

and the game is ours.

4 weeks ago I would have bet on Navy to beat us heads up, but after last weeks defensive effort, I'd say we have a chance to win.

I have to disagree with thread starter game plan. I fully understand the stick with what has worked approach, but ND has the supposed number 1 QB against Navy. I think you go out gunning, try to get some early stops and once you have a lead against Navy it's a wrap. Of course this team with a lead on anyone is questionable. I think this D is actually setup well for this game, Drue will be a stud, the inside DL is quality, and the linebackers have enough gap control to get it done.

3 part process(You've got it already, I'm just going to summarize)

1. Control the full Back Dive in all of its forms... whether its straight up the gut, veered to the outside of the Guard or any other option scheme they use (mid line etc) to avoid Jarron Jones or to try to trick him.

2. Get them off schedule.... If its 2nd and 6 and then 3rd and 2 all day we would be in trouble. We need to find 3rd and long by stuffing 1 of the 1st two downs.

3. Score Touchdowns when you have the ball and get that 2 score lead Navy controls the clock because without many passes the clock rarely stops. This will result in fewer possessions for our offense even when the tempo is quick. Need to score 7 when you have it and if possible make them throw more passes by building a lead.

I say this every year but hit the damn quarterback EVERY play

I've seen it a few plays here and there, but we just don't do it. I think the team is just completely conditioned to think that every time they touch a quarterback, it will draw a flag

But an option QB is a different beast and in 95% of their plays, he's basically a RB and can be hit

Every hit you put on the QB, that pitch arm gets a little more hesitant

Ditto this!! And tell Drue not to be jumping up and down after making a good play!!

I NEVER expected to EVER see threads openly speculating on whether or not NAVY would be simply too much for NOTRE DAME to handle....EVER!!!

How do we beat Navy? For 43 years in a row we managed to beat them with a few close calls for good measure but nary a loss for 4 decades plus...

Now, the program has sunk so low under Kelly's "leadership" that there is actually concern about not just losing to them, but of even being able to remain competitive????

How does Notre Dame beat Navy?

1) Show up.

2) Actually play your assignment and avoid stepping on your member.

3) Keep repeating 2) until the final whistle.

Worked for 43 years...will work again every time it is followed...

in '13 BK put the QB under center and ran down hill on navy and the playaction bootleg to the TE worked every time ND ran it (id like to see that play come back). on offense let the OL just shoot off the ball and drive their man backwards.

on defense ND will need to stop the full back, also they cant get out manned on the edge so that means the LBs and CBs will need to shed their blocks.

hasn't ND been average/below average all season with running the ball? I wouldn't want to count on the running game to win the game.

ND has talented receivers (plural). mix in some run, but throw more often and keep scoring.

the problem with ND throwing it all the time is that it sets up a lot of 3rd and longs if your not completing your 1st down passes. I wouldn't mind ND passing the ball on navy, but running the ball is a must specially against and undersized defense. if ND can line up with two TEs and run the ball down hill on navy and then just pass the ball when they want to keep them from crowding the line.

The middle better be ready to play. That means Cage and Jones. If they can hold the middle down then Rochelle, Tillery, and Tranquil can get the qb and the edge.

We look day and night better on defense.

I expect to win. Does ND?

You took my answer. Jones should have another big game if he can stop the FB Dive. We need to force them outside.

I think we can stop them more often that they can stop our offense.
