Suppose you are about to graduate as valedictorian from ND.

Lots of firms are interviewing you and offering you great jobs.

You make a special connection with one person at one firm and ultimately choose that firm all the way across the country where you have no family and know no one other than that one person.

You arrive at your new job.

A day later that person takes another job somewhere else.

You might be a little irked. Your family might be likewise irked.

But I thought losing Alford wasn't a big deal???

Now, our best running commit is ticked. Ugh.

If you read his subsequent tweets, he's still all in and loving the Irish.

Autry Denson, step right up!

Good to hear. We must keep him in this class.

Indeed, sir.

Correct. What I feared was the case does seem to be, in that Alford's decision has left at least one recruit feelings misled. However, he seems to have committed for the correct reasons and though feeling betrayed by Alford, still seems solid. Look, Alford is a loss and his recruiting was very solid, but the sky is falling bs is incredibly over the top. It would be wise to reserve judgement until a replacement is found. You certainly feel that way and so do I.

Autry Denson, step right up!

Yes sir. I hope so.

Obviously this is not an issue exclusive to ND, but it is kind of weak how this gets handled and how immediately the coaches officially leave as soon as the names are signed on the line that is dotted.

Not really sure how to better deal with coaches moving on, but it does rub me the wrong way how programs will sit on moves they absolutely know are coming simply to keep their recruiting classes intact.

You can tell he's not enrolled yet. A non cryptic tweet.

Considering the OSU RB coach just took the Bears job as the RB coach, I don't think Alford was thinking OSU until very recently. I don't think ND was sitting on anything.

Hard for me to believe the Ohio State coach just all of a sudden agreed to move to the Bears, or that Urban didn't know and already was in contact with Tony and that ND didn't already know and was already in touch with possible replacements.

And that all of it was on the down low and delayed so as not to disrupt recruiting classes.

I am sure that it wasn`t a spur on the moment for Alford to leave. Or even if it was his idea. No matter the reason, I hate to see him go.

Most assistants do not leave until after NSD and Kelly has probably been looking for replacements a while.

Remember, Kelly said that there could be some changes made in the coaching staff after the season.

Well it certainly hasn't been long. Fox has been coach for what...two weeks? Even if Meyer and Alford had been in contact, until Drayton left for the Bears Alford wasn't going to leave for OSU. I'm sure the Bears had more guys in mind than just Drayton. Plus, from the looks of it, it seems as though most coaches leave after NSD to be respectful to the school they are with at the time.

Also, there has already been plenty of speculation that Autry Denson will be the new RB coach at ND. I think Kelly did look, and looked fast.

I'd tell Dexter that if he didn't think this was a business, now he knows. And if he is successful at ND, the next step becomes a business even more.

Agreed. If a player chooses a school because of a coach, he is in for a big letdown.

When we call these coaches " great recruiters" we mean they are great salesman and they know how to "close" on a customer....that requires these guys use lots of personal , lets say personal persuasion , although every good salesman that knows how to push the right buttons for each customer really uses a bit of "manipulation" as well ....its a fine line.

Its clearly going to be uncomfortable for a recruit when the guys that just "closed' on you , often laying it on very heavy , joins an opposing team.

Out here former UH star Jeff Ulbricht has been in the LOCAL NEWS in a similar situation---He announced on NSD he was leaving as the linebackers coach for UCLA to join the Atlanta falcons......" ULBRICHTS offer to join the falcons, first reported by fox news, came at an unfortunate time for UCLA as news broke in the middle of NSD....the uncertainty around ulbrichts status caused 5 STAR RECRUIT ROQUAN SMITH WHO ANNOUNCED FOR THE BRUINS EARLIER IN THE DAY, TO REOPEN his recruitment."

That recruit is no longer going to ucla----now the NFL should be more understandable for a recruit then what alford did, just shifting to the WINNERS INSTEAD OF THE LOOSERS in a similar capacity.....

I don't much care for it so I can imagine what the recuit that has been shmoosed for the last few months would feel like.

We are LUCKY he at least waited till the deed was done even though that's kind of lame as well.... but we needed DW et al so you do what you have to do

The business side of football does not overflow with ethics anywhere i'm afraid and ND is no exception.

aloha

listen.

it is the nature of the business.

alford spent 6 years at ND and found out what he was doing wasnt enough to get a head coaching job. he feels more titles and more stops will help him get there.

players can still have grat careers and lives even if a coach leaves.
