Coached with Chip Kelly at Oregon and in Philly. Also coached at Bishop Gorman.

He just took a job with Vandy less than a month ago. Interesting.

Makes sense to me. Vandy is not a good place to be now, they are in the hangover period of their recent modest successes. All of the traditional SEC east powers are going to improve and put them back in their place.

I like it but I am not sure I am feeling the ring of truth after the whole Brady Hoke thing yesterday. There is a lot of coaching shakeups yet to happen over the next month, this would be nice though.

Incidentally, Wikipedia (I know, user edited) has this listed for his coaching career:

Lyght began a career in coaching in 2009, following several years of working in private business and as a football analyst on radio. His first position was as an assistant football coach at Bishop Gorman High School in Summerlin, Nevada. While on staff, the team won back-to-back state championships in 2009 and 2010.

In 2011, Lyght joined the staff at the University of Oregon as a defensive intern under head coach Chip Kelly. Lyght was initially contacted about the open position by Ducks defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti, who happened to be an assistant coach with the Rams during Lyght's playing days.[8]

Lyght was named assistant defensive backs coach for the Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL in 2013.[9] The hiring reunited him with Eagles head coach Chip Kelly, who had departed Oregon for the Eagles following the 2012 season.

Following the 2014 season, Lyght was hired by Vanderbilt to be their cornerbacks coach.[10]

In February of 2015, Lyght was hired by the University of Notre Dame to replace Kerry Cooks as defensive backs coach.[11]

Mind you, the source they are siting is 247 Sports, so take it for what you will.

If we were to add Hoke and Lyght to the staff that would be wonderful

Sounds that way.

On Feb. 2, Irish247 mentioned him as a potential replacement for Kerry Cooks, who left to coach defensive backs at the University of Oklahoma.

In addition to our report, Lyght was not present during Vanderbilt's Signing Day festivities yesterday.

Update

According to Vandy sources, we're told Lyght was offered the position two days ago and he accepted. We're told this is a "done deal" and Lyght will officially join the staff soon.

I would be surprised if Hoke came on board, he's talked about staying out of coaching for a year and has been strongly denying the ND rumor.

If Hoke came aboard you know it would only be a short term deal. I doubt any more then a year. He'd be looking for a head coaching gig.

For as average as our program has been the coaches are in high demand

II reporting it is official: Lyght to coach at ND!

Nice hire, getting an alum who had a great college and pro career. That should matter on the recruiting trail.

Doesn't have a lot of recruiting experience but handled Buncom's recruitment while at Vandy and he had high praise for the way he goes about his business. Has ties at all three level so that's always good.

I really like this hire and think he will be excellent coach and recruiter. Never bit on the Brady Hoke rumors, that is just ridiculous.

Agreed. Love the move. Can anyone teach the position better than him? Didn't think so. Lyght is Notre Dame through and through. Think he is perfect for this position and wouldn't be surprised if this is the beginning of something even bigger for him long term coaching wise or at ND.

He was at ND when I was there. Soft spoken. He didn't strike me as a football player - small.

He was at a party. Not drinking. Hanging out.

Good pick up. Smart player.

I know, crazy isn't it. He was one of the best, made it look so easy and effortless. One of my favorite players of all time!

Great move, real happy with this. Can never hurt having an alum out there telling recruits and their parents how great the Notre Dame experience is
