Going into the 2015 season ND has a crowd at tight end:

Heuerman JR 6-3, 225

Smythe JR 6-4, 240

Weishar SO 6-4, 235

Luatua SO 6-2, 260

Jones FR 6-5, 220

All the pundits seem to think Jones plays a lot as a freshman.

Will one of these guys get bumped to linebacker or some other position?

I don't think you have to worry about Heuerman. Kid hasn't been able to put on any weight.

See lots of two-TE sets coming for 2015 with renewed running game taking off because of it.

We said that at safety last year.

They will all have a roll. Luatua will get time regardless due to his size. Curious to see who steps up into the 1, 2 rolls and is the best every down TE.

Jones will get time. He is just too good.

I've loved Smythe since we got his commitment....very excited to see what he can do with more reps

Great hands and very athletic with premium size

I posted something similar to this on another thread, but Jones is someone you play early no matter who is on the roster.

Luatua will primarily be used in a role similar to a fullback.

Smythe will be used as both a pass catcher and inline blocker.

Anyone see Latua completely steamroll an LSU LBer during the bowl game? He pushed him over like it was nothing

Luatua is the unofficial fullback on the team, he will get his playing time.

I think Smythe will be the new #1 and I am also excited about Weishar.

Jones is the shiny new toy that may see some playing time, but I doubt he jumps ahead of Smythe and Weishar.

I am becoming more and more persuaded that Heuerman may make a position switch. I guess LB would be a problem destination even though I had a debate with someone over that recently in which I was opposed to the idea. I am starting to change my opinion on the matter.

I love Alize but I could easily see him get redshirted. Nobody else thinks that way however which is fine.

I think Smythe is a stud and we have Corey Robinson (who is similar to jones until he adds serious weight). In fact, Boykin and Alize are pretty much the same guy right now.

Fasano - Carlson - Olson - Fauria - and what's his nuts that transferred to Stanford was a logjam.

None of the kids you've spoke of have really done anything yet..

BK isn't going to develop TE's like your grandfathers ND teams did..

We'll be lucky to get a good one every 2-4 years but TE U is long gone.

Man I wish Luatua would play D line, still reminds me of Troy Nikalas.

Completely disagree, but to each his own.

I honestly can't tell if your post is serious or tongue in cheek. You left off Rudolph, Niklas and now Koyack, who will be the lowest draft choice in recent memory but still a sure fire mid round pick. Kelly and Co. have plenty of positive data points to continue this trend and I could see the trio of Smythe, Weishar and Jones emerging along with Luatua in more a traditional Hback role. The tradition will continue in my humble opinion.

Koyack is getting drafted? To where? The arena league?

Don't forget that first round pick in Eifert he left off as well.

I'm confused... Are you saying Fasano-Carlson-Olson-Fauria were all together at ND? If so that is false... Fasano last played in 2005, Carlson in 2007. Fauria was a true freshman in 2008 with Rudolph a year before Eifert landed on campus. Olson was well before those guys. Maybe only Fasano was around when he was on campus. Konrad Reuland was the Stanford transfer.

Mike Ragone was mixed in with those names.... Always hurt though

I had to look it up because it was bothering me...

4th round is my guess...when I'm proven correct you can send me a new Packer print, this time one for Randall Cobb! Deal??!!

I hate to agree but I agree. I have not seen BK develop TE after TE. We had a good run with Fasano - Carlson - Rudolph - Eifert and to a lesser degree Nicklas. And to an even lesser degree Koyack. I see a downward trend, not an upward trend. These could be products of the QBs over the past 5 years, but I think JT is right on this one. I still think ND will continue to product quality TEs and WRs, but not at the rate we did in the Weis era. Let's face it, the offensive studs that came out of the Weis era were rifreakingdiculous. They might not be all NFL stars, but they were studs in college.

7th round if he is lucky, Probably a rookie free agent. IMO. Also, to hell with the Pack!:puke:

I think the majority of my posts are somewhat tongue in cheek..Some just more "facetious" than others. I didn't mention those guys because there was no logjam of talent. I was referring the era where we had guys, who consequently had to transfer, yet ended up starting at other programs and eventually played in the league who were buried on our depth chart. That is my understanding/definition of log jam..

You're right... My point is not diluted by the fact I got the names/yrs wrong.

My point is that we had a log jam of NFL talent on our roster during these years...The guys started at other programs and ended up in the league..

My 2nd point is that really none of these kids have really shown us anything of promise other than a few stars next to their HS recruit ranking.
