I just read that next year we will play 6 teams from the ACC conference. Yet we are not eligible to play for the conference championship. I mean how many games do you have to play in order to win the championship?? Schedule one or two more and suddenly our season gets a lot more interesting.

We heard all the talk about how important it was to be a conference champion in order to get into the final 4 and play for the title. What are we going to do, wait until we get shafted and forfeit the chance to win a title before we wake up. We get to play an extra game when we are a really good team.

I think we are making an absolutely horrendous mistake. Join the conference and do it now. What would playing in the conference championship do for our recruiting? To me this is a no brainer.

I never thought I'd advocate joining a conference, but you're right. If we are undefeated it probably won't matter, but if we have one loss we're going to be in the same position as Baylor and TCU this year.

The writing may be on the wall Tim. I think ND holds out for a year or two more; hoping the playoffs go to 6 (or eight) sooner than later. But I essentially agree with your premise if the playoffs stays in its current 4 team structure. The only way we get a playoff sniff is to go undefeated or with one close early loss and lots of style point victories. The committee spoke pretty loud on the conference affiliation and championship.

Agreed. Been wanting conference affiliation for years...

Not sure the ACC would have been my choice, but it's a conference nonetheless...

Need to join a conference, I wish it was the Big10 though

Agreed. I thought the Big 12 was a good spot.

The second we join a conference I'm done with College Football. Hell it probably does not matter either way, if they don't get college football fixed in the next 2 years I'm done anyways. Theres no way I want my kids growing up idolizing any American athletes, especially football players. ND is the only reason I watch and if they join a conference they will just be the final nail in the coffin that its all about the all mighty dollar.

Hahaha, it's always been about money, son...

it was obvious when it was decided

and now

becoming more and more obvious with how Big 12 was judged

Need to join a conference, I wish it was the Big10 though

I think that'd be the worst conference for us. Academically, geographically, and whatnot make sense, but I cant imagine that Michigan would allow any consideration for ND in the conference and that we'd be instantly marginalized much as Northwestern and Penn State were. The Big ten exists to advance the cause of Michigan and Ohio State. That's it.

We should join a conference but it should be the big ten not the acc.

Conference championships are stupid. Who cares?

The school, in the past, argued about getting into the markets they want to get in to. They wanted the freedom to go any where they pleased. But just look at the states the ACC come from as far as recruiting. You have Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia, Kentucky and Massachusetts. I think that is phenomenal.

We go to those states and compliment it with California, Texas and another state of our choosing. Just not seeing any reason not to join.

Conference championships are stupid??? Bull!!! They are fun!!! One more game when you are having a great year. A championship trophy which we don't have any. Millions more viewers. Recruiting takes a boost as it is in prime time recruiting season.

I think Swarbrick knows all this. I think he is actually going to do something. I know he is looking at it. Let's not wait until it costs us dearly.

I'm also in the might as well camp. 6 vs 8 is getting pretty close for bowl tie-ins. We might as well compete for that Championship, even if it costs us purdue and navy, but they won't get rid of Navy but I wanna play Stanford every year.

Okie would you give up Stanford, we need 2 more games and I don't think they drop Navy. I think they drop Purdue, but if they won't drop Navy then who?

Conference championships are stupid. Who cares?

but if you don't play in 1 you are punished for playing 1 less game

and those who play get 1 more win and 1 more quality strength if schedule while ND sits and watches

I hate to say it but they need to join a conference. As long as they play USC and navy every year

No

There is a problem with this threads reasoning on joining a conference---

The premise appears to be that a conference would somehow increase our chances of getting into the playoff--and that even if ND has a great year in its current state as an independent it MUST be uber great or our lack of conference affiliation would put us in an also ran position....

There is a GIGANTIC hole in this thinking--its NOT INCORRECT it is incomplete...

Yes it may very well help us in the playoff selection committee assuming we ever make it to consideration at all....

BUT THAT REASON IS ONLY TRULY IMPORTANT TO US AS FANS

The incomplete element is MONEY!!!!

The control ND exerts over its own business without the demands of conference affiliation is very HIGH. We make our schedules--we think of ourselves first--we have control over a plethora of small to large business decision that would be COMPROMISED by joining a conference and becoming one of 12 with the collective responsibilities that ensue.

OUR PROGRAM IS HIGHLY PROFITABLE EVEN THOUGH OUR LAST 15 YEARS OF TEAM PLAY HAS BEEN NOTHING SPECIAL!

We though are special--our business model is special--our profits our special

There is more then simply tradition that has underpinned the stubborn reluctance of the powers that be to join any conference---THERE IS MONEY!

And that IMHO will likely trump any of the sound logic put forward that our chances to get selected to the tournament would be modestly enhanced in the ACC.

IF IT APPEARS THAT IT COULD COST US MONEY BY REMIANING INDEPENDENT--a pressure that seemed to be growing before we made our ACC deal

That would be the ONLY reason we would be drawn kicking and screaming into a conference---FOOTBALL reasons like an easier path to a NC through conference play ---WILL NOT BE PERSUASIVE IMO!

aloha

I'm not advocating one way or the other, but they are playing in 6 conference games to make up for only playing in 4 this year. After next season, it will be five a year.

People using one year of a new system as a pattern again.

I stand firm in that we do not need to join a conference and being independent has so many other benefits. The big one is being able to keep the varied schedule that we have now.

Need to join a conference, I wish it was the Big10 though

That would destroy ND recruiting. Indiana football does not produce enough in state players and kids from the South and Cali wouldn't be jumping at the opportunity to play a bunch of cold weather games.
