January 27, 201510 yr It was Greg Mattison FYI at least he didn't sit in their living room and refuse to leave the house.
January 27, 201510 yr Man, first Mattison is happy to be fired from Baltimore to drop to Michigan, then he's happy to wait out a demotion at Michigan. Now, he's getting this kind of bad press? Rough fall from grace, huh?
January 27, 201510 yr There are few people I hate more than that sellout Greg Mattison... First, you send your kid to ND, then you leave to go to UF and do nothing but talk sh*t about the program. F you, pal!

Rough fall from grace, huh? Sounds like he was trying to sell them on academics at Michigan, which is very good, and went about it the wrong way. "Come to Michigan, and get a world class education" OR "You'll be doing you and your family a favor by coming here, because without your shuttle time and bench press numbers, you'd be at community college son.."
January 27, 201510 yr 3.1 is a respectable GPA and this kid said earlier that a Michigan offer would be a big deal. Tremendous screw up on Meatchicken's part. I like that they kicked the guy out. Some people play the game and let the person run the speal, I like the 'Get the f*** out' come back. To be a fly on the wall.
January 27, 201510 yr In other words, everything he said was true he just has a complete lack of ability to communicate delicate concepts in a manner which will be embraced and not insult the intended audience. Also, obviously none of us were in the room, but perhaps this recruit and his family should obtain thicker skin.

January 27, 201510 yr yeah, I sort of doubt that was the first time he has said such a thing. I have no doubt. Perhaps this isn't the issue in this case and maybe he did come off like an ***, but far too many recruits and parents want their asses kissed just a bit too much.
January 27, 201510 yr Yeah, he did tell the truth and the same could probably be said abiut many recruits but his words clearly displayed a lack of tact. I think it's a positive that the boy's family seems to care that their son should not be stereotyped as a dumb jock though. It sounds to me that they value his receiving a good education and to outright suggest football was his only option to receive one was a slap in the face to them.

If someone came to my house trying to sell me something (which is what Mattison is doing here) and they called me an idiot, I would make them leave too... Not sure it has anything to do with having thick skin, it is common courtesy and respect to not insult your host in his own house.

I understand that, but I doubt very highly that that's what he was trying to say. Of course, I could be wrong, I wasn't there. Still, I can't imagine him saying anything like that. Sure, if he did say that, that's uncalled for, but can you really imagine him implying that? I simply cannot. I think he failed to articulate his point, they jumped on it and likely didn't give him much of a chance to clarify his meaning.
January 28, 201510 yr Out of state tuition for freshman is $55,000 a year at Michigan. Admission standards are very high. I don think it is a stretch to say football was the only way the kid was going there. Plenty of "smart" kids aren't smart enough for Michigan.

I think he failed to articulate his point, they jumped on it and likely didn't give him much of a chance to clarify his meaning. Maybe, like you said, we were not there. However, there have been multiple recruits (I believe Nix was one) that were told that they could not make it at ND because the academics were too hard for them. I cannot say for sure what Mattison meant, but I believe there are plenty of coaches out there who go to recruit's homes and tell them how easy academics are because they know what their GPAs are and how they perform in school. They say that stuff because they believe the recruit does not care about academics for one reason or another. I am obviously not a recruiter, but I dont understand why a coach would ever use that line to a recruit. There are other ways of selling the schools academics and other ways of telling a recruit this is a great offer. Oh well, I dont really have a dog in this fight and the recruit seems to be happy with the local team anyway. I just thought it was an interesting choice of words.
January 28, 201510 yr I think Mattison is a slimeball, as well. However, someone who has been doing this for 30 years would not come straight out and and tell a kid in a disrespectful manner. It was probably along the lines of "Your gift of playing football at a high level has afforded you the opportunity to get an education at a premier institution that (insert University stats on degrees, etc)."

This is Mattison we are talking about. The guy that has a reputation for recruiting by focusing on the negatives of the other schools you are considering. The simple truth here is that Mattison probably completely forgot how to say anything positive about any school.
January 28, 201510 yr Sounds like Harbaugh is already rubbing off on Mattison. Not good publicity, any way you spin it.
