This is the kind of hire I wish ND made. Seems like we are always a bit behind the curve on hires like this. Coach O may be the best recruiter in the biz and there is no doubt in my mind that LSU will be back on top with him there.

He doesn't go for Home Run Hires, he's had many opportunity to bring in Top coaches and hasn't. He just hires his Div.2 buddies.... Alford was already here

I want to hate Ed, but I just can't. Even with all the anti-ND stuff he once spouted and his allegiance to usc. LSU is SUCH a a perfect spot for him, though. Close to home. Tough nosed D Line. He'll do great there and maybe be a head coach candidate in short order. Or, maybe he'll need to jump to a DC first.

He did not work this past season because he promised his wife he would take a year off.

This season he was waiting to hopefully hear about a HC job but it did not come.

Great information. Wish him the best in his new role. I did like the guy at USC and thought he should have been give the job permanently there.

I got to know Coach O when he was recruiting some kids on my track team. Nice guy, really fun to talk to. Different personality than Alford though. Not sure ND would be the right fit for him. He'll be perfect at LSU. Good for him!

I asked him that once, he said of course, who wouldn't take that phone call...

He interviewed for a ton of HC positions, and really seemed to say that he was either going to only accept a HC position at a respectable position where he could succeed, or he would take a year off.

 

Ultimately, I think he'll always either be a top notch D-Line coach/recruiter at a premiere institution, or he'll be a solid mid-level head coach at a place down south. Think he'd love to have the head coaching job at a place like Louisiana-Lafayette or Louisiana-Monroe.

I also thought we missed in Nussmeier when we had a chance.. he didn't get put in the best position at U of M because of personnel but could you imagine what is run first offense that he had at alabama would have done at ND... it would have highlighted a huge team strength (RBs), it would have taken the pressure of golson (which I think would have made him better too). Nusseier always made those Bama QBs look way better than they were because of the way he put them in such great positions to succeed.

 

Side note: Now that I'm thinking of it... if Kelly didn't force Golson to "be the man" do we think he would have been really successful managing a game and winning big on play-action?

Sorry Nick Saban but going into Loisiana and stealing the Landon Collin's of the world just got harder. Coach O can recruit.

Lots of chatter about him, shall we say, bending the rules when it comes to recruiting. Probably jealous talk. Les Miles is strictly by the book.
