I definitely see that being believable. After all, if a school can get EG, they get a guy that has an upside that is off the charts....and if he can't figure out how to quit turning the ball over, then they are only on the hook for a season.

This is definitely win-win for whoever gets him (ND included).

Changing schools is tough. He would need to learn a whole new system just to compete against existing talent. He won't have timing with all the players, etc. He may not be firing on all cylinders for a long time if he transfers. If the o-line isn't strong he may be running for his life - he doesn't know how good he had here.

Tough choice. If he cleans up his performance and doesn't fumble he is tough to beat. Hope he comes back.

I disagree with "upside off the charts". Golson has a lot of talent.

But you also have to remember that he will be coming in at earliest in the summer when team practices aren't allowed as often. He will basically have fall practice to learn whatever offense he is in.

Then he has 1 year to play left.

So while he has good talent, the situation he is going to be going into, if he transfers, will not allow him to utilize that talent fully.

Can schools recruit in this situation? What are the rules?

We have to be honest with ourselves here.

Golson has lots of talent. But he has rarely to never shown the ability to take over games, especially against good opponents.

You look at QBs like Mariotta, Cam Newton, Johnny Manziel, etc ... Godson is not at that level.

I will say he can be an amazing QB out there for a lot of teams. Maybe he doesn't have the gifts to stand back and whip it all around the yard. Maybe running some stuff under center and giving the defense more looks to think about could help? maybe it could help the running game and in turn help godson have a better play-action passing game?

Regardless, to win a national title, you have to have an amazing game-changing QB or a solid one with a very stout defense.

What do you mean good opponents? He single handedly beat Pitt for us during our run.

He beat Stanford for us on a 4th and long TD pass...

I think he Golson can get in a system that can protect him, he'll be a Heisman finalist..

Pitt isn't a good team. And remember Golson actually got benched in that game for ineffective play.

And kudos on the throw in the stanford game. He made a great read and toss. but didn't dominate the game, right? struggled for most of it in crappy conditions, his turnovers led to Stanford points.

He hasn't shown consistently to be a game-changer in his two-year career.

And there hasn't really been one thing he has shown to be exceptional at doing.

Coughing the ball up......

I would be surprised if all 24 schools expressed interest in him as a QB. He is quick enough to play a possession receiver. Maybe a slot receiver as long as you don't get him in the path of a big linebacker.

Pitt finished 2012 with a record of 6-7.

Stanford finished 2014 with a record of 8-5.

Mediocre teams in which, on a whole, he played mediocre games. He scored 20 points in regulation against a bad Pitt defense and looked mostly ineffective against Stanford.

It was purdue and michigan when he was benched.

davis, your memory is betraying you

Kelly pulled Golson late in the second quarter because he was missing reads and progressions. But the coach put Golson back in after backup Tommy Rees threw an interception and the Irish fell behind by two touchdowns.

Not with those hands!!

Serious note: I wont mind if he stays, the kid has plenty of potential, just needs to keep it together.

Ha, he would be fine if he just freaking tucked the ball. Always trying to get away and make something happen.

Sorry we don't have any good comeback wins against Bama, Auburn, and Georgia...

My point is he has the ability to take the game over and attone for his messups.

I still don't think that all of his turnovers are his fault.

every fumble his fault.

not all INTs are and he was even given one that wasnt.

however he has NEVER taken over a game against elite competition the way you see other elite college QBs do.

for that matter he doesnt it consistently vs mediocre or bad teams.

In football it's very hard to evaluate the rest of your talent when you have an offensive line that can't block anyone. Go back and watch the games to see how many times an unblocked defender forces the ball out way too early.

I'm not saying the OL is as bad as they were in 07, but Jesus I'm tired of seeing our boys up front completely wiff and have defenders in the backfield immediately. That causes your QB to press and make bad choices.

I also realize it's not going to be perfect every time, but more times than not he was pressing because our boys up front were simply not getting it done.

Way too many people put way too much blame and credit on the QB and other skill players.

Yep, you are correct on both points.

It sucks getting old

Call me perplexed. I've never thought I'd see the day where you critiqued a Notre Dame alum, player, faculty etc. this board finally got to you!
