Posted December 31, 201410 yr Just saw that irishillustrated retweeted Shaun Crawford saying that although he's 100% irish he would still take harbaughs call. Do those of you in the know of the recruiting world think this could greatly impact our class this year?
December 31, 201410 yr IMO won't do much, he's only got a month to recruit. Don't think he makes up much ground except getting mediocre prospects. Also, not one of our recruits is from Michigan, which has to be a positive.
December 31, 201410 yr i don't thing there is any HS football player who would not take a call from him. He's been a winner wherever he has coached and has an NFL pedigree. He'll be trouble for ND recruiting from today on.
December 31, 201410 yr I hope Bilal doesn't have a change of heart. Wasn't he big on UM until their season went down the drain?
December 31, 201410 yr Just remember he doesn't have any staff yet. He may be able to flip kids, but he is going to have to do it all by himself until he gets some staff hired, and that could take a little time.

From what I'm hearing, that won't be a problem for long. Mattison is rumored to be staying and it's very feasible that he's already working some phones. And, they sound like they have Florida's DC all sewn up and ready to be on board maybe as soon as this week.
December 31, 201410 yr As soon as the writing was on the wall that the Fatman was going to be on his way out of town at UM I was nervous about this hire. Look at what he did at Stanford with restrictions on recruiting - now put him in a school where winning is prioritized and education is an afterthought. Good Lord, this is trouble.

Unlike say Ohio State, Michigan is a good school. That being said, Harbaugh is going to be formidable, just hope he dosen't stick around too long, I give him 4 years tops.
January 1, 201510 yr I think the only way this impacts ND (edited to add: this year) is Kinnel is unlikely to flip, whereas before the hire I think there was a decent chance. Edited January 1, 201510 yr by artfernisanass
January 1, 201510 yr Best case scenario is he cost us a couple of recruits a year and stays four years. Worst case, just let your imagination run...
January 1, 201510 yr Best case scenario is he cost us a couple of recruits a year and stays four years. Worst case, just let your imagination run... I'd bet a paycheck that he won't be around long enough to see this year's recruits graduate....
January 1, 201510 yr I'd be more worried if I was Urban, he will have big impact in Ohio areas that we aren't strong in anyway.
January 1, 201510 yr Let's see what old Jim does without Andrew Luck at the college level or a very strong defense in SF. Not saying dude isn't a good coach, because he is. However, I'm not near ready to name this guy the "savior." Point blank, his style turns off almost everyone. It's almost unheard of to be dismissed in the NFL with taking your team as far as he did (2 NFC championship games) etc. I heard the last straw was the halftime blowup at the Dallas game (game 1) this year. Not sure parents are going to be doing cartwheels letting their 18 year olds play for this guy. Let's sit tight and be patient. He has A LOT of work to do.
January 1, 201510 yr He wins...he built Stanford's defense. And, Michigan recruits for itself. He can find an Andrew Luck each class if he wants. Parents dont care if he's a hardass as long as they win and their kids have a chance at the NFL. People make too much about coaches being "mean" because the same people dont have the stones themselves.
January 1, 201510 yr I'd be more worried if I was Urban, he will have big impact in Ohio areas that we aren't strong in anyway. This, too. I doubt Urban is worried, but Harbaugh is going to have some success poaching in Ohio. And the rivalry will be back in full swing.
January 1, 201510 yr Author Yeah it'll be interesting to see just how well he does with recruiting. I dont remember how his classes were at stanford but obviously the expectations are a little different over there. I'm currently living in Toledo Oh and there are a lot of Michigan fans here who basically expect that he'll have his choice of which 5 star recruits to choose. I hope its not quite that easy for him
January 1, 201510 yr I think the only way this impacts ND (edited to add: this year) is Kinnel is unlikely to flip, whereas before the hire I think there was a decent chance. Yeah, Kinnel said he hoped Harbaugh got the job. Definitely staying.
January 2, 201510 yr Harbaugh hire will have a lot of impacts... POSITIVE --> B1G Improves, Good for ND: A competitive Michighan makes the B1G a better power conferences. The bowl implosion of the SEC West will hopefully help the national media and masses be open to the fact that the SEC is not THAT superior, if at all, and that will help ND in its standings as more will recognize that ND has a very competitive schedule... in my wishful thinking. NEGATIVE --> RECRUITING: Recruiting the midwest just got harder for ND. More competition for finding and getting the hidden gems of the midwest. We are now competing with Meyer & Harbaugh. BUT, just forget the midwest... Harbaugh is a well known quantity in California, and among academically competitive athletes, his call will also be credibly picked-up. One of his criticisms of Michigan was that they'd forsaken education. Given his experience in building a program at Stanford, many will believe they can get an education and be competitive at Michigan. I hope Kelly has truly learned from all the mistakes he stubbornly insisted on learning in terms of Off / Def philosophy and execution... we have a 1 year head-start on staying ahead of Michigan in the all-time win % ... Harbaugh will turn that program around.

I hope its not quite that easy for him He'll bring in some studs, no doubt, but it will not be as easy as those fans think it will be. Meyer is a relentless recruiter, so Jim better be ready to fight tooth and nail for every single recruit he's after, becuz if they're going after some of the same guys (esp Ohio kids), Urbie won't quit till the last second on signing day.

Plus you have ND. Recruiting is not gonna go down because of coaching change at another school. ND recruiting will still be great.
January 2, 201510 yr He can find an Andrew Luck each class if he wants. No he can't because they don't exist. Andrew Luck is a phenom and is one of the top 5 qbs in the NFL. His combination of brains, leadership, overall fundamentals, intangibles, and productivity are nearly impossible to find especially at the college level. Also, his classes weren't that high coming in. For example, his 2009 class ranked 20th nationally. Hardly making me shake in my pants. Again, let's see what this guy can do without Andrew Luck and SF's defense/rushing attack.
