ND at a disadvantage without conference championship game forcing them to play a harder schedule than necessary and putting them in harms way more than other typical 12 game schedules? Swarbrick says BK is on the "cold seat"
December 26, 201410 yr I never believe a word Swarbrick says after he said (I'm paraphrasing) "the day was like no other day" after the scaffold got blown over and killed Sullivan. In fact, it was as windy a day as I can remember living in South Bend since 1965.

In fact, it was as windy a day as I can remember living in South Bend since 1965. There is a lot of dispute about the conditions that day - even amongst fellow boardies...
December 26, 201410 yr At least our AD isn't fickle like rest of our fans.... I still take exception to our women's basketball team's ignorance of legal procedure.
December 26, 201410 yr Author "cold seat" from the comment under the article.... * 4 out of 5 seasons with at least 4 losses * 3 out of 5 seasons with at least 5 losses * 1 season out of 5 ranked in the final Top 20; 2 out of 5 in the final Top 25 * 6W-13L record against all teams ranked in the final AP top 25 * 2W-6L record versus teams ranked in the final AP top 10, with 5 of those losses by double digits * ND's two bowl wins coming against a 8-4 Miami team minus a head coach and 6-6 Rutgers If the above is "consistent" with the AD's "expectations" for the Notre Dame football program, then Notre Dame needs a new AD. I wouldn't question Swarbrick, his expectations are higher than what BK has been able to produce, he has to be behind his coach until he isn't behind his coach.

In fact, it was as windy a day as I can remember living in South Bend since 1965. I believe that the highest gust of wind was 26MPH except for one that hit 52 MPH and it toppled the scaffold. It is odd that you hold Kelly accountable when the parents do not.

December 26, 201410 yr I wouldn't question Swarbrick, his expectations are higher than what BK has been able to produce, he has to be behind his coach until he isn't behind his coach. Swarbrick has been the best thing to happen to ND post-Holtz.
December 26, 201410 yr Author Swarbrick has been the best thing to happen to ND post-Holtz. i agree the Swarbrick criticism was from the comment he's brought must needed change and needs to continue to do so the stadium additions are great just as long they eventually include a jumbotron

December 26, 201410 yr I believe that the highest gust of wind was 26MPH except for one that hit 52 MPH and it toppled the scaffold. It is odd that you hold Kelly accountable when the parents do not. WTF? Point me to the statement where I said I hold Kelly accountable. What I did say is that Swarbrick lied about the weather that day. It was windy as hell and not like any other day.
December 26, 201410 yr Swarbrick has been the best thing to happen to ND post-Holtz. Well that's damning with faint praise. Both the men's football and basketball programs have been mediocre overall under his tenure. And Muffet doesn't need Swarpuck. Everybody knows that.
December 27, 201410 yr Yes, they are both responsible. Especially Kelly. He should have never been on the lift. The lift should never be up in winds. That is widely known.
December 27, 201410 yr By reading this article It didn't seem like Swarbrick and Kelly hate each other like someone suggested on this board.
December 27, 201410 yr WTF? Point me to the statement where I said I hold Kelly accountable. What I did say is that Swarbrick lied about the weather that day. It was windy as hell and not like any other day. You said that it was a fact that it was the windiest day that you can remember in the last 50 years. And you were insinuating that it was Kelly`s fault that Sullivan died. Do you really know about the students that video the practices and who is the only coach that they talk to?
December 27, 201410 yr We learn something new every day. I thought that Kelly and Swarbrick got along fine. Recruiting at ND has to be the hardest part of Kelly`s job. Recruits are not lined up at the door to get in. Out of the top 100 recruits, how many list ND as their number one choice? Out of the top two hundred? There are a lot of very good schools that they can chose from and several are in the SEC. Depending on the major and the location that they want to work and live after graduation, ND might not be the best choice. It is not fair to blame Kelly for having to go head to head against coaches like Saban that can Red Shirt or Gray Shirt. They have football subjects that ND does not offer. A foreign Language is not required. And then the students get expelled from school for cheating instead of getting a failing grade for that class. ND is not going to change, which most of you don`t want, but recruiting players is very difficult. Hiring a GOOD head coach is harder.
December 27, 201410 yr We learn something new every day. I thought that Kelly and Swarbrick got along fine. So did I but I recall someone saying they were no longer on speaking terms Recruiting at ND has to be the hardest part of Kelly`s job. Exactly, Alabama can have 2 or 3 coaches assigned to florida/georgia alone and have coach taking the whole northeast and midwest. They have too much of an advantage in the hotbeds It is not fair to blame Kelly for having to go head to head against coaches like Saban that can Red Shirt or Gray Shirt. They have football subjects that ND does not offer. A foreign Language is not required. And then the students get expelled from school for cheating instead of getting a failing grade for that class. It cracks me up that the people that want kelly fired have no plan about who to hire. There is maybe and handful of elite coaches and they have good, high paying jobs. I think kelly is better then a crapshoot at this point. ND is not going to change, which most of you don`t want, but recruiting players is very difficult. Hiring a GOOD head coach is harder. I think ND has changed. Field turf, we are taking borderline students, they are holding camps in the south now. It's taking a little longer but I think things are moving in the right direction. I doubt we ever become a top 5 team every year, but most teams aren't. I'd push for an extra game since we don't have a conference.

ND is not going to change, which most of you don`t want, but recruiting players is very difficult. Hiring a GOOD head coach is harder. Kelly has gone up against Saban once (and got destroyed.) Now what about Kelly going 1-4 against Stanford, a team with very similar academic restrictions? Or Kelly's loss this year to NW a team who at the time had one of the 10 worst offenses in football, and another team with similar academic requirements? What about his loss to those kings of gray-shirting the Navy Midshipman. Or the vaunted football factories of Tulsa and South Florida. Or his close games to teams of the likes of Pitt, Purdue and North Carolina. To act like it's Kelly vs. those dirty SEC cheaters is disingenuous, when he has so many losses (and near losses) against teams that aren't even near the level of Shaw and Stanford much less Saban and Bama. And there has definitely been some major holes recruiting wise since Kelly has been coach, (some his fault, other out of his control) but to blame recruiting alone is also a cop out. Per Rivals ND had the #2 class in 08 (seniors on the 2012 team), #21 class in 09, #14 class in 10, #10 class in 11, #20 class in 12, #3 class in 13, #11 in 14 and ND is sitting and #9 currently. With an average class hovering around the 10-15 mark, why then is ND consistently losing games that they shouldn't? Is it the recruiting rankings being about 20 places off every year? Or is it coaching? edit: Also Notre Dame has and has had plenty of 5th year players over the years, including one this year from on of those evil football factories, so pulling the "ND can't redshirt stuff" is just excuse making.
December 27, 201410 yr I don't believe I have ever witnessed an AD tell the truth when it comes to the safety of a head coach's job. Swarbrick can and will fire BK if he churns out another 7 win season next year. And some of you will still never learn. BK will continue to leave flaming paper bags of dog shlt on your doorstep and you will continue to extinguish it with your boots. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Fk6M1gqV-0A" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
