Anyone have a list of the players who played and the ones who red shirted this year?

Featured Replies

Unofficial list (correct me if I am wrong):

Kizer

VanGorder

Holmes

Weishar

Byrne

Mustipher

Bars

none on defense I believe (proves how young this defense truly was)

Not sure about Bonner.

Bonner, Nelson & Williams ?

I know Williams played and pretty sure Nelson played as well. Though I am not sure on the rules. I have heard that if they play only a certain number of snaps, then they still qualify.

Williams and Nelson did not play this year

Either did bonner

Ok, I went back and looked at the game participation lists. However, redshirt rules are odd and I am not super familar with them. So I will break it down and maybe someone else can say yah or nay.

For sure redshirts (They are not listed in any of the participation reports):

QB Kizer, QB VanGorder, TE Weishar, OL Byrne, OL Mustipher, OL Nelson, OL Bars, DL Williams, DL Mokwuah, K Newsome, and LB Bonner

For sure NOT getting redshirt (They played in a majority of the games):

WR Brent (9 of 13) Did not play against Syracuse, Stanford, UNC, and FSU

TE Luatua (10 of 13) Did not play against UNC, FSU, and Navy

DE Trumbetti (12 of 13) Did not play against Purdue

DE Blankenship (11 of 13) Did not play against Navy and LSU

DT Cage (11 of 13) Did not play against Louisville and LSU

LB Morgan (12 of 13) Did not play against Michigan

LB Martini (13 of 13)

CB Watkins (11 of 13) Did not play against Michigan and Stanford

S Tranquill (11 of 13) Did not play against USC and LSU

People that may be on the edge depending on redshirt rules:

WR Holmes (2 of 13) Played against Rice and Michigan

DL Hayes (3 of 13) Played against Louisville, USC, and LSU

LB Hill (7 of 13) Played against Michigan, Purdue, Syracuse, Navy, Louisville, USC, and LSU

My non-expert opinion, both Hayes and Hill burned their redshirts because Hill played more than half of the games and Hayes played at the end of the season. However, I am not sure about Holmes, he only played two games and they were both in the first half of the season, the rules regarding that confuse me or they change it... I dont know...

Forgive my ignorance but is that VanGorder QB related to our defensive coordinator?

He is taking a scholarship as well...

This year but normally the walkon ones are year to year if the are available

He was never a walk-on though. He came in on scholarship. Not sure what will happen with him. But I will pull an echo88 here; the kid does not deserve a scholarship, it's a waste of one if they get tight with numbers.

Hill and Hayes are not eligible to redshirt... Kelly said that in the presser before Louisville

All scholarships are year to year...it's just extremely difficult to pull a scholarship on a kid who is meeting his academic and athletic responsibilities...if he's not up to par athletically he should not get the scholly

It's a nice little bonus for BVG - the financial savings is upwards of $80,000 in tuition, housing, food and books... That's about 120k in salary allotment - ND saves the cash in compensation / BVG saves the out of pocket cash and is able to cash-in or gift the college savings plan he's likely built up for his son - creating a tax friendly cash grab

I suspect Monty will turn into a smart kid who goes into the family business... He's also a nice way to help his pop keep a pulse on the team off the field...

Which translates to players very likely being cautious around him. My guess is he doesn't get a lot of invites to parties...

Hill burned his redshirt by playing in so many games. Hayes burned his by playing late in the year. Holmes COULD keep his redshirt if his play ended for medical reasons and he had to undergo treatment for a documentable injury (all this only because he stopped playing so early in the year).

I think I've heard The rule for medical redshirt... I believe you have to play in less than 30% of teams games and none after halfway point....not sure in general though

Not a problem at nd...
