Yeah but Lane didn't invent the notion of using women for recruiting. It's been suggested John Wooden practiced that strategy way back in the day.

 

I wonder how often coaches get in contact with the girlfriend to encourage them to persuade the recruit to come to their school?

I'm sure they were. I remember the jersey chasers at ND and they would do anything to get with an athlete. So i'm sure top recruits would qualify.

The two that are mentioned in the book stated that they did not do that. They state that it was their job to make the recruits think they were interested in that or maybe even a relationship and they were willing to do it. The girls don't sound any better than Kiffin or any of the other coaches who promoted the behavior as the girls sounded very "opportunistic". One of the three mentioned in the book, however, once she became cognizant of what was going on, quit the Orange Pride program and transferred to another school. Said that her view of Tennesse is very negative now.
