Irish Illustrated @NDatRivals

Asked Jaylon Smith about Brian Kelly’s comment about open competition for positions, sophomore joked, "Like coaching included?"

I find this very interesting...Whether he was joking or not, it obviously popped into his head. I really hope BK hasn't lost the young talent on this team or next year is going to be more of the same.

I am actually glad ND got a tough draw because I want to see what fight they have in them.

Interesting. Maybe it's because Jaylon believes Zaire should have been the guy many games ago. Has BK officially named the starting QB yet?

No QB is open competition...so says BK...

If Kelly and his staff have lost the team, then they deserved to because they've been idiots for more reasons than I can even begin to count.

And you want to know what fight this team has? Just watch the USC game -- they have no fight and they're poorly coached. This has been an amazingly bad football team from top to bottom since the Navy game. Just end the damn season. There's nothing to be gained from injured players practicing with bad coaches that they don't pay attention to anyway.

Since the Navy game? ****, I'd say since the UNC game to be honest. Looking at FSU's body of work before and after the game against us, was losing by 4(albeit we should have won) that terribly impressive?

Yeah, the more I think about it...that comment doesn't sit well with me...there's a lot of issues with the program right now. I also add this to the pile of exhibits of evidence that BK will be gone by February...

Wow... That's a helluva thing for one of your best to say.

This is not over, BK doesn't take things like this lightly

I would be very surprised if BVG is back next season

I know you aren't a fan of him, but is this realistic?

I have to believe it was just a joke, if it wasn't or BK takes it wrong prepare your a$$ for the bench Jaylon. Lol

Joke or not, it's the first thing that popped into his head....which usually means there's some validity to it.

I definitely think it adds to the red flags of why this team played the way they did against usc....obviously in addition to the injuries.

I respect your opinion, Colin, so do you think if we get smoked in this upcoming bowl, which is highly likely, the heat would he so high that BK could actually be gone by Feb, as Rocket says? In light of all that has come before including this quote from Jaylon?

I think it depends. If it is an embarrassing loss and our recruiting tanks I suspect he will have a tough time staying. But then by the time that all comes around there won't be a good coach on the market.

Without a good coach available I have a tough time seeing him going anywhere. That Lane Kiffin guy is available ;)

For the record, I don't think he gets the boot, I really think he's going to leave on his own accord...

I'm with you on that one. I've felt that way almost from day 1 that he'd spurn us for a higher calling or he'd do something so incredibly stupid that would force Jack to show him the door.

I don't think BVG deserves to get the boot. I don't think any first year coach deserves the boot especially given his circumstances.

Exactly, I think there's less than zero chance of him getting fired. I could see him leaving...but not fired. Hell, two months ago we were erecting a statue for him and signing him to a 20 year deal. Thumbs up!!!

There's no way Kelly gets fired after the bowl game. Will he leave for the NFL? What team would want him? If you're an owner, how do you sell a loser like Kelly to your fanbase?

I think he'll be back. I hope to god he makes staff changes, though. The team was descimated by injury and suspension, but what's happening right now clearly is not working and the players who aren't in full body casts are no longer paying attention to the coaches.

I assume you mean in the future outside of this year? I can't see him getting an offer this year to do anything.

I saw this last night and although I obviously don't know the context, it immediately sent up a red flag, whether he was straight joking or not.

It could also be a response to media criticism of the coaching staff, the players can read the same things we can although again, I don't know if that is the case.

Regardless, it's not the sort of thing you want to hear from your superstar defensive player near the end of a disappointing season.

He would have to reinvent himself, he saw the ship sinking and did nothing to try and right it,week after week we saw the same packages failing, OC's were having a field day.

I felt sorry for all the young players that were left out there with no idea what to do.

Hopefully someone woke him up and he does some coaching and helps get these players get were they need to be.

You act as if this is Ty's or Davie's failing packages.... BK is much more productive and it could be a hell of a lot worse. I'm happy the young guys got a lot of PT. Hell, this was generally a young team and they sure acted like it. Did BK screw up? At times... But, a lot of our mistakes were the result of youth. The most important factor in developing youth is PT. We'll be fine as long as the band of fools doesn't run our coach out of town.
