Even IF we had finished 11-1, the committee just put the 4 winners of the 4 Power 5 conference title games into the playoff.

We are NEVER getting in without an unbeaten season....

Disagree, had ND beaten FSU and had one other loss, FSU would have been out and opened a new spot in the final four... ND will never be #1 or #2 - but nd would get a top 4 spot

This is correct, as currently constructed. However, this is obviously going to go to 8 very soon and I think eventually, they will go back to computers, as well. In the future, we'll be fine but as of now, no chance unless undefeated.

Who cares?

11-1 with loss to fl st even though cheated we would of been out. no quality wins. even though ohio st played no one they would of beaten us out

i guess i should point out that Notre Dame is considered a Power 5 school

Yeah, and IF my aunt had balls she would be my uncle.

Who cares about if, ands, and buts? If they were candy and nuts it would be Christmas every day!!

Geez guys why are you biting his head off for discussing a topic that's relevant? He's right, it's very clear in this format if you don't have a conference championship you're behind the 8 ball because it's one less shot then most teams get to impress the committee.

Makes me feel a little better about the downward spiral atleast

ND like FSU this year has to go 12-0 to get in. There is no way they would allow them in with 1 loss. With just 1 loss to FSU, ND would probably be ranked 7th. The committee made it clear that you have to win your conference. If anything it is a cop-out for them to remain relevant.

Our best chance at making the playoffs is joining the big ten. We might be forced to join sooner or later, I just think it's the weakest conference so gives us the best chance.

Couldn't agree more, this committee will basically force us to join one and I know it'll likely be the acc when it happens but my vote is for the big 10 for sure after what I saw Ohio state do and what the committee did for them it's clear they aren't that down on the big 10

Not true, Notre Dame was still ranked ahead of the other schools after its loss to FSU. If Notre Dame was 11-1 with its only loss to FSU, that was cheated from us, they would have been in the top 4. Easy.

We collapsed down the stretch so the whole discussion is kind of moot. If we hadn't been screwed over vs FSU and taken care of business the rest of the year, who really knows? The ugly, simple fact is, we didn't and we had no place in the conversation as far back as the ASU game.

I do understand the point though and the current system does not favor us unless we go undefeated convincingly. I had a feeling tOSU would slip in there after taking Wisconsin out behind the woodshed. That is the kind of win ND would need to be in the conversation, not squeaking by against Navy yet again or failing against the likes of ASU, NW or Louisville.

I do think that the way things are set up, joining a conference is pretty much inevitable. Big Ten, Big Twelve, ACC would be my order of preference.

I don't agree. It's about northern and northeast audiences tuning out of what would have been a mostly southern championship. Hence Ohio State bumping the two southern teams. The purpose of the playoffs is money, and ESPN is paying the price. They want advertising money to pay for the huge investment they made televising the playoffs. So, there was no way they were going to risk not having Midwest and Northeast audiences tuning in.

I don't think it is inevitable IF they goto an 8 team playoff.... What Meyer did at Ohio State was unbelievable this year... 3 different qb's and still only 1 loss.

I can agree with this sentiment. I do think you will see the playoffs expanded before too long.

I agree. I expect them to go to at least a 6 team playoff in the near future. They have to be able to satisfy the TCUs and Baylors of the college football world. Smaller conference teams with garbage OOC scheduling that put up ridiculous numbers.

I don't expect those teams to win more than once a decade (if that) against the traditional powerhouses, but I do want to see if a team like TCU can beat Bama or Oregon. 19 times out of 20, the answer is probably no, but at least a college football playoff can afford them that opportunity. The way it used to be, one of these smaller schools would need to go undefeated to play in the national title game. With one loss, a team like that would always get beat out by a major conference undefeated team and a one loss juggernaut like Bama. Now at least with a 4 or 6 or 8 team playoff, schools like that would get a shot. That's what playoffs are all about, giving that team a chance to play their best game on that particular day.

The committee sent the message very early and hammered it home at the end.

1. Play in and win your conference game.

2. You must be in a conference

3. TV draw will play

Our chances of making a 4 team playoff are zero in the current environment. We must go undefeated (but even then it is not assured), they must go to a 6-8 team playoff, and lastly we must join a conference. (I vote Big12)

The BIG is a crap conference!

I constantly see people in here knock the Big 10 conference but every time ND plays a BIG 10 team we either get our arse kicked or barely win.

So what does that make us
