I think he will be on their shortlist. Would be a devastating blow to ND recruiting. He is top notch.

Silver lining is that of he does get that job, down the road he should get very high consideration when BK retires or goes pro

I was thinking the same thing. I can't realistically think of another coach who I would want as a HC. Let him cut his teeth at a decent program and then come back to ND a couple of years from now.

In reality, we would not promote him internally.

Alford would be a HUGE loss. Recruits love him and he's done an amazing job with the rb's.

Head coach pushing for his best recruiter to leave? Again, if Kelly is here in February I will be shocked.

Seriously???? We're pissing on him for picking up the phone and going to bat for one of his coaches?? An awesome guy who has a chance to be head coach at his alma mater?

Who would ever come work for BK if he refused to do this?

I'm not pissing on him. Just adding fuel to my belief that hes as good as gone...

Of course, he would do this for one of his guys. He did it for Martin, Quinn, Diaco. He has always said he wants to see his guys get promoted upward and get a chance to run a program. But he can't stand it when a guy would make a lateral move.

Great news for Alford. hopefully it works out. Brian Kelly has always been really supportive of his coaches getting head coaching positions and has done well in that regard.

In terms of a coach we should get -- Jeff Quinn. He would be a great add to the offense (and we need it!)

Perhaps Kelly wants a coach to leave so he can hire Quinn without having to fire someone.

I kind of wonder if this is one of the reasons ND is pursuing Jeremy Smith, the JUCO running back. If Alford leaves, I don't think Soso or the other top tier high school guys will come to ND. A JUCO, on the other hand, would probably jump at the chance.

This would take the sting off a bit...

The other part might be the BK is actually a decent guy and wants his guys under him to succeed and move up. Alford has been tremendous and sounds like an even better guy, people are and should be lining up to give the guy support. It may suck to lose him but he definitely deserves the opportunity.

I don't disagree with any of this...

Or, Kelly doesn't make the call and Alford realizes he's topped out at ND and makes the first lateral move, or maybe even demotion, elsewhere just to get a fresh start.

It seems in coaching there's very few lifers who stay at one position forever and are content and still a good coach with that attitude. Either guys are moving up, or moving out.

hypothetical question, where would he go?

Sorry for rough effort...

If you suddenly see many coaches moving on, then maybe. But, the notion that he pushes one coach to a promotion while leaving others with deeper ties, like BVG, on staff is faulty.

just going from what I'm hearing, Chicago will not be an option even if Trestman is let go (doubtful but who knows)

If there was a single team that would roll the dice on BK, my guess would be the Jets.

I think he's here for year 6 and gone one way or the other.

I could see the Giants if TC is fired.
