Posted December 3, 201410 yr Apparently it is a running back and it looks like it will be an official visit, which I hope means that he is already offered and could commit. This would be huge. Taking JUCOs would give us a fighting chance to keep our scholarship numbers up.
December 3, 201410 yr Isn't the main reason we don't take jucos that they can't get past admissions, otherwise they wouldn't be at a Junior College in the first place? Or is there something else I don't know?
December 3, 201410 yr Author It could be. However this particular recruit, Jeremy Smith, will be on an official visit which means he has cleared at least the preliminary admissions hurdles. I always believed that the rule was just an absolute prohibition on taking JUCO transfers regardless of their transcript.
December 3, 201410 yr sounds like a different type of juco... Southeastern Louisiana's loss was Fresno City College's gain as Smith's father, Craig Williams, found the school on his home computer and researched the Rams before he picked the school over other JCs in Mississippi and Arizona. "I stumbled on coach Tony (Caviglia) and Fresno City," Williams said. "I looked at the great things they're doing over there ... having kids graduate and moving on to other schools and to advance in their career. "What impressed me with coach Tony is the high percentage of guys that graduate. That's what impressed me the most. When I talked to him ... his character and being honest. ... It's a better fit for my son." Smith is majoring in engineering and carries a GPA of at least 3.0 or better since high school. December 3, 201410 yr Great, another talented back who will be underutilized... my thoughts exactly. If you're a RB, why would you even consider coming to ND? I suppose the "pro" would be they wont get banged up in South Bend.... RB's have a shelf-life and it certainly wont expire in an Irish uniform.
December 3, 201410 yr If ND is going to finally start looking at JUCO's there is still plenty quality players left. Alex Henderson ILB Corey Waller OLB Sam Schwab DT Troy Garland CB Tyler Hayes OLB Daniel Ross DT Patrick Au OT Rodney McKenzie WR just to name a few, see which of there guys could get in
December 3, 201410 yr Great, another talented back who will be underutilized... Haha so true. Looking at our passing / rushing stats on the year (and eliminating QB/WR rushes) we have 437 passes (62%) to 273 runs (38%). With a 5 star and 4 star stud recruits in the backfield. And the only game we've had to play catchup on is USC this year.
December 3, 201410 yr Dardo.............some kids cant afford the 4 yr cost of College, so going the juco route can save them a lot of money.

Oh I wasn't putting down Junior Colleges at all, for the average person it makes a lot of sense. The kids that Alabama and the SEC are getting from JUCOs aren't going in order to save money, they are going because they didn't qualify for division 1 football academically, or they have gotten in some trouble. They go to a junior college for a year or 2, get the grades they need to get into a division 1 school, then get their full ride.

December 3, 201410 yr Some guys just aren't physically fit yet for D1 and instead go the JUCO route to gain muscle.
December 3, 201410 yr ND accepts JUCOs and has for awhile. The problem is that they have to be academically eligible and meet certain requirements. Letter of the Law: Yes, ND takes JUCOs Spirit of the Law: No, they don't
December 4, 201410 yr I hope this means that Kelly is committed to running the ball more next year and opens up the door to more JUCO's in the future.
December 4, 201410 yr I hope this means that Kelly is committed to running the ball more next year and opens up the door to more JUCO's in the future. I will believe it when I see it...on both counts.

Letter of the Law: Yes, ND takes JUCOs Spirit of the Law: No, they don't It is also worth noting that ND doesn't "recruit" JUCOs like other schools do. This means that a potential JUCO recruit would need to be the one reaching out to ND and doing the leg work to get the ball rolling. ...in other words, the only JUCOs ND will get right now are the ones that have ND on their short list for one reason or another.
