What is going on with our strength and conditioning program? I've never seen any team as decimated as this team with injuries. We had 2 starters out from defense from academic to start the season but losing 7 players on defense before tonight is insane! We lost 3-4 more tonight. Do you guys think this is a S&C issue or just people trying to take our guys out? It really started with Navy.

I think it's a S&C issue.

Our guys are blowing up like never before. I would easily understand it if our guys were SEC big, but they're not.

We are small and still blowing up so maybe we need to bulk up a bit? But that brings on a new set of problems..

It's hard to get bigger, faster, stronger and not blow up.

Oh it has been asked My friend...I myself have been saying we look weak. Our defensive line men have no muscle to them what so ever our skill position players look pretty good though....I asked that question during the chat. It's been asked know one has a solid answer as to why we are getting injured on every play....oh yes they do...one person said it's because we are unlucky.... lmao.....

Do you think BK is too good of friends with Longo to look at him objectively ? I don't see much change coming this offseason. Even though something needs to change. I agree we look weak on both sides of the ball.. This Oline should blow people off the ball

I responded to a similar post a few weeks ago, so I'll cut and paste here, while elaborating:

"As far as weight room issues, at the combine this year, Tuitt tied for 6th among defensive lineman in the bench, Martin and Watt tied for 11th among offensive lineman, Shembo was 6th among linebackers, and Niklas was 4th among tight ends."

When 5 of your products perform at the top of their respective positions at the NFL combine, you're doing something right.

Now, I'm as skeptical of the "unlucky" explanation as you are, so here's my hypothesis:

1. We were so thin to start the season that the starters played a ton of snaps early on. More plays = more opportunity for injury.

2. Once we started turning the ball over so frequently, said players were in on even more snaps, same iteration.

3. As the younger players, who weren't physically ready to contribute, started seeing significant time, the inevitable occurred - they were physically manhandled and injured.

Maybe, we don't tackle right? I mean Redfield dove, tackled awkwardly, and boom broken rib. Though, a lot of the injuries were legs, and maybe we were just snake bit? I mean yes, getting your legs stronger could help. But seemed to me a lot of these injuries were fluke ones. 2012 we barely had any injuries and look what happened? Also, seems to me a lot of teams are losing huge pieces. Braxton Miller, RB from Georgia, JT Barrett, Treadwell, etc.

I've wondered whether S&C may be a factor in the injuries but I don't remember injuries being as big of an issue in Kelly's first few years, it's mainly been the last two years that the injury bug has bitten us badly.

We've also been playing a lot of young guys, most of whom haven't completed their natural physical development, not all of them are physically prepared for the college level of competition and some of them do not have the frames to carry extra weight, even though Longo is supposed to be good at crafting individual training regimens for guys with certain body types.

I'm no doctor or trainer but I don't know that you can blame all the injuries on S&C. Can't really blame turf after losing five guys to injury on grass in one game like yesterday either. A lot of injuries have been straight up contact injuries, violent collisions, players rolling up on others legs, etc.

The Cowboys employ the same S&C coach they had in the glory years who was also with the Patriots at their peak. The Cowboys have been decimated by injuries as well the last couple of years but that wasn't the case in the first half of the 90s or when the Patriots were at their peak.

In short, I believe that most injuries can be explained away by extreme or awkward physical contact, poor positioning during the course of a play, genetics and just plain bad luck.

Shhh. Don't suggest that! Some of the board doctors above will scoff at you. The fact that some of these injuries might be out of everyone's control--probably scares them.

I don't know if I blame the s&c coach as much as I blame the fact that we play way more freshman and sophomores than ever before. It's hard to blame a coach for not getting a guy stronger when he's only had a few months to work with him.......although I guess the chicken/egg argument could be made that they wouldn't be playing if the seniors weren't hurt......oh man, this season sucks.....

Longo is considered one of the best S&C coaches out there...

BK's first season we had a ton of quad and hamstring issues. BK said it was something Longo was looking into and going to adjust. He did...the result was 2012.

Remember waaaay back to 2012? ND didn't loose guys to injury...they were healthy, fast, and strong...even in the 4th quarter!!

Why?

Longo's S&C program.

Now whether it's young ages or bad luck I have no clue...but it's not like Longo stopped his program and told the kids to do whatever they want.

Longo is the same guy who even had all the QBs jacked at Cinci!!! I remember seeing those guys and being amazed...

Yeah, why, in fact if you make that argument, EVEYTHING is based on "bad luck!" Everything is "out of everyone's control" including the coaches!

Their poor recruitng and dvelopment of the senior and junior class lead to this problem, not just plain old "bad luck." Obviously, some of it was misfortune but to bury one's head in the sand about the other clear factors involved, like you seem to be doing here, is ridiculous.

Yep, only ND has.bad luck and injuries

Yeah, remember when everyone was ecstatic with all the "under the radar" 3*s Kelly found his first two years?

Show me one who has developed beyond expectations. The vast majority have done absolutely nothing of value their 3-4 years here.

Rabasa should have had to pay for a season's ticket...

the only sure thing about luck is that it will change.

Josh Atkinson. Jalen Brown. The list goes on. Other thank maybe Farley, it is hard to find a 3* guy Kelly hit on his first two years.

I blame this on the advent of Rivals/Scout/IrishEyes who hype recruiting classes and gullible fans who pay the subscriptions and then come onto the free sites spreading the hype. Every year there's players who nobody elite offered a scholarship to who is hyped by these sites as an under the radar gem. Councell and Rabasa are two notable examples of this, when in fact they both were properly evaluated by other coaching staffs and were examples of how low ND had to dip into the recruiting pool to get scholarship players.

Rabasa had offers from Florida, FSU, Miami and LSU among others.

So they say. I just don't believe any of these sites. I don't think they can honestly track down real interest on so many players. But these sites know what they're doing, and there's no doubt two more Councell's and Rabasa's are getting hyped to gullible fans who pay the subscriptions right now.

I have to admit, as a BK supporter, I thought we would see him take these guys and do what Peterson at Boise did, and get more out of them than even they thought was possible. One of those coaches where you would say "I don't know what his methods are, but dayamn, he gets the absolute most out of them as possible." I'm running out of excuses for him.

By whom? I'd love to see where you acquired that info

Longo's S&C program.

I think we lost a safety and a corner that year. A tight end, Daniel Smith as usual. Did Collinsworth play that year? The cop fighting running back? So many injuries.

Also, how many shoulder injuries did we have after trying to tackle Bamas running backs? Motta, Teo, Jackson.

Longo Needs to Go. Get a young guy who doesn't fart when he squats.
