I said it last week and it happened again. As bad as the defense is they actually did enough to win this game. They had some stops when needed. Yes, they sucked but it was better. We lost because we can't score inside the ten. No reason to kick a field goal at the end. First and goal with a minute and a half left. Two field goals on first and goal inside the ten in the first half. If your defense sucks you have to get touchdowns. The sweep killed us last week on the Brown fumble and we went to it again inside the ten and lost yards. Backwards passes and sweeps are horrible calls when the field is shrunk in the red zone and Kelly continues to call it. We lost because of we can't punch it in. I knew he was going to miss the kick and walked out and didn't watch. Get some new plays coach because your play sheet sucks!

I've been saying this for years. Kelly's playcalling in the red zone is horrible. Way too many field goals that should be touchdowns, and way too many turnovers that should be field goals.

First and goal from the 10 with under 2 minutes left in a 3 point game, the defense is 100% expecting a run. Play action pass is an easy TD there.

I know ND will not fire Kelly, but I will be thrilled if he moves on to the NFL.

When my wife (who knows very little about football ) can predict what plays BK is going to call then something is terribly wrong. By the way she is correct 75% of the time!

this is why not having a strong running game kills ND, it's hard to pass and run wr screens that close to the goal line. BK has no patience for a running game and it continues to hurt ND, you can't win titles without a strong running game.

Folston had 134 yards of rushing. We did not lose that game because we couldn't run on them.

Most of those yards are on plays that went wide. Those yards are tougher to get inside the 10 because the corners and safeties are playing up so close.

Whether it be blocking scheme or the O-line just not being talented enough, running inside has been a weakness.

On the first drive on 3rd down at the 9 yard line Louisville blitzed the corner guarding Fuller who was wide open with a safety trying to guard him. Golson didn't read it and went to his primary receiver Prosise who was covered underneath by a linebacker and over the top by a dB. So, Golson tucked it and ran. This is the kind of growth area where Golson needs to improve. I believe he will.

She picked you...are you part of the 25?

Ouch.

And in other news, why we don't call the 3 stacked wide receiver set on the right 100 percent of the time inside the 10 is beyond me. You put Fuller, Procise (For blocking purposes) and Robinson in there and put the ball up. Nine times out of ten, the defense is confused and one of those guys is wide open, against FSU and again this weekend, Robinson was wide open.

That kid is a beast, because of his size and hands I can see him leaving ND with some records under his belt.

yes folston ran the ball very well but even with his effort I would not say ND dominated the line of scrimmage like a true running team would.

The QB draw play was a great call. Had Martin made his block, Golson had one man to beat one on one, with a lot of open space ahead of him.

The draw isn't a bad call. He is standing at the fifteen yard line though with a defender at the goal line. That is a long way to run untouched with a defender that will be right on him. That play is fine from the five but it's to far to run to get to the end zone in my opinion. It's not just this week it's every week. We have a joke in the house that every time we get to the five we go backwards. It's getting old.

He is standing on the 15 because Martin got beat so badly. The play was designed for Golson to follow Folson through the alley to the left of Elmer's block. That got blown up because Martin was shoved 5 yards by the Lville defender, closing the gap. Martin was supposed to ride the defender to the left of Golson, with his body between he and the defender, but Martin got blown up.

playcalling would look a lot better if people did their jobs.

QB draw example below.

Call whatever play you would like, someone has to execute it properly.

In my opinion, the redzone is the perfect incubator for Malik Zaire. Give him a red zone package that includes a lot of zone-read.

Isn't this an ongoing theme? Other teams saying/knowing they can push our lines around all day? What is the issue here? Is it coaching or conditioning?

I am not looking to blame, just want to know why these guys are getting blown up so badly. This plays looks so bad because one key element went wrong, it is not like that every play but I don't see our line dominating on either side of the ball, even against bad teams.

I really wanted a rocket/tunnel screen to Fuller on 2nd down, that play has been $ pretty much all year.

It's not just that series on the last drive. It's every game. We get to the five more than any team I've ever seen and turned it over or kicked field goals. The only consistent thing that works is giving the ball to TF. Last game he spun his way in and against the Cards he walked in. For some reason we continue to do screens, wide receiver sweeps and gimmick plays that lose yardage many times on first down. Once we are in a bad position we throw the lob to Cory which was way overthrown this game. Then it's up to Golson to run around and make something happen from the ten like the draw play and that's not high percentage. The only constant that works is Folston and we do it once a game. Turnovers on zone reads when Golson pulled ball back against NU. Sweeps to receivers that fumbled. Golson throwing into double and triple coverage for picks against ASU. All from the five yard line. Run the ball a couple times with Folston from the five and he has proven the line and him can get the touchdown. Golson is more unreliable than Tommy and I never thought another QB could ever reach that milestone.
