Posted November 20, 201410 yr @Jake_Brown: #NotreDame HC Brian Kelly said tonight the redshirt is coming off former #Rivals250 DE Jay Hayes. Depth issues bring opportunity.
November 20, 201410 yr Tim O'Malley @timomalleyND 12m12 minutes ago Jay Hayes will be in rotation. They're removing the redshirt. Minimum of 30 plays, upped to about 40 (USC) Maybe more than 40 by bowl game. Tim O'Malley @timomalleyND 11m11 minutes ago BK says key to decision for Hayes is to get him to 100 reps over 3 games. Makes it fair to the player (Cage, Blankeship, Hill about that) Also, Collinsworth and Tranquill will be the starting safeties. Irish Illustrated @NDatRivals 15m15 minutes ago South Bend, IN Brian Kelly says Austin Collinsworth and Drue Tranquill will start at safety this weekend. Chris Hine @ChristopherHine 11m11 minutes ago Kelly on Shumate: Not hurt. Seems to be out of two deep, Collinsworth, Redfield, Hardy, Tranquill are the top four. I don't know about these moves, I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I'm beginning to think he only reason why he was playing was because collinsworth was injured and Hardy was suspended. And it looks like Redfield might be going in that same direction.

November 20, 201410 yr Good for Jay! Congrats and good luck! The bigger deal is safety. Redfield still not starting?
November 21, 201410 yr Good for Jay! Congrats and good luck! The bigger deal is safety. Redfield still not starting? Notre Dame, where 5 stars go to die.
November 21, 201410 yr Redfield has been playing really soft. I don`t know what happened to our hard hitting safety? Are you blaming Kelly for Redfield being afraid to hit? Or for missing tackles?
November 21, 201410 yr Or Transfer out of Notre Dame, where you can be smart enough to learn Mandarin, but not smart enough to learn the safety position.
November 21, 201410 yr Tranquille and collinsworth starting might be a worse coaching decision than. Any Kelly made last week and we know how bad that was. I've seen Shumate and Redfield give us the best safety play since Harrison smith the first 7 games of the year. Collinsworth has been a liability side day one, he's a special teams guy period! You saw the practice videos of loyal roasting him play after play, now tell me how many times loyal has roasted someone this year? Another stupid move by Kelly, after their play last week we reward them, expect can to start as well. Let's sit our few elite athletes who will probably transfer after this joke. Why recruit elite players to only start guys who got roasted by northwestern, I just know this will turn out bad. Were wasting a redshirt now cause USC and Louisville will exploit those safeties who are northwestern quality athletes.
November 21, 201410 yr Pretty sure anyone who quit because they got benched would never have the balls to make it this far already. And damnit if I can't figure out who loyal is. Haha. I remember Farley getting burned badly too during fall camp and he's done well. Given up some plays but he's underrated, the guy does a lot that doesn't always so up on the stats. I trust the coaches. And redfield has looked bad. I don't care how many stars he has and how talented he is. Collinsworth will bring it. Don't take it from me, ask his teammates who voted him captain. I think the players know better than anyone.
November 21, 201410 yr Oh yeah, this was about jay Hayes. I had an opinion on that too: I think the guy has missed out on 3 months of development and being in the rotation and I really wish at this point in a meaniness season, we have his year 4 for 2018. Obviously, that didn't work out so well with nix and the chance to develop even more this last month plus may be huge for next year. So im vacillating between ambivalence and disappointment. But excited for jay! Seems like a good kid.

I watched collinsworth all last year and last week unfortunately, it was not a pretty site. I'm not stupid enough to think hell perform better than Redfield or Shumate, if he does I'll eat my crow but I highly doubt that will happen.
November 21, 201410 yr Maybe Kelly is using this as a discipline situation for Redfield and Shumate... Don't tackle, play soft, and blow assignments and you are riding pine ... Collinsworth, and Tranquill might not be as talented , or provide the big play capability , but they will go 100%.. This might be a lesson for these kids going forward into next year... Play hard , or don't play... If this is the case I am totally fine with it.... Good for Jay! However I would have rather saved a redshirt, but with cage and Day out , don't have that luxury.
November 21, 201410 yr Notre Dame, where you can be smart enough to learn Mandarin, but not smart enough to learn the safety position. Or the RB blocking scheme

Sorry brother. I just don't agree

The only reason he was voted "Captain" was because of his sweet little pep talks he gave about himself not living up his responsibility as an upperclassman, definitely not because of his play on the field!!!

November 21, 201410 yr BK said something to the effect of Hayes being NFL worthy and he probably wouldn't have seen his fifth year anyways.....If that's the case, why wouldn't he have rotated him in earlier? It's not like this line couldn't have used the help all year long. As far as Redfield is concerned, he obviously has not lit it up, but has anyone on D? BK always has people that are in his dog house and then he is really too stubborn to put them back in.
