What's the point in bringing in great offensive line classes over and over when they can't block? They have no push, cant run block and Golson is constantly getting pressured. Such a waste.

What's the point in these highly ranked running backs when they dont know how to be a running back? They have no awareness, dont know where to run, no instincts, run into their own blockers and can't block.

Seriously, there is a problem here.

Go be a Texas A & M or Oklahoma fan. It's one thing to be critical about some issues sometime after the game but your just a killjoy.

Stanford is a really good Defense.

we rushed for 130 yards against a good stanford defense.

stanford ran for 45 yards against us on 32 carries.

There is a definite problem with the running game but this thread is ridiculous. Alford is one of the best coaches out there. The O line needs some shifting and the backs need to run with a little more confidence. Right now, I can guarantee the rbs are frustrated but it's just a matter of putting the pieces of the puzzle together.

So you'd suggest ... what? Bring in a low ranked class to keep the expectations down?

I think you're being a little harsh here. They just out rushed Stanf 129-47 on a terrible weather day. There was one team out there today that couldn't run the ball and that was the Cardinal.

Is ND a rushing juggernaut? Hardly.

Is improvement needed? Definitely.

Are there personnel concerns? Yes. IMO, Steve Elmer lacks strength.

Seems to get pushed around more than he should.

But it wasn't that long ago that everyone was celebrating Harry Hiestand's coaching here and elsewhere. It's game 5. Work in progress. 5-0. I still believe in ND's OL and HH.

And btw, how do you think Stanf feels about THEIR running game?

You just criticized Harry Hiestad ?

They tried something new tonight and it didn't work, if the same group plays in the same "spots" I would be shocked - Harry is not the problem, on the other hand, he is breaking in new players at new positions and has the team undefeated averaging over 30 ppg with a new QB and some pretty aggressive play calling and tempo...the offensive line hasn't drawn many flags and overall providing sound pass protection...

I would expect the offense to come out swinging...and I wouldn't be shocked if a few new players come back to play and help them start fast and strong.

Fellas...we won against a top 15 team at home when the weather sucked and looking like a monkey kissing a football in the red zone and special teams...a little help from the refs, but still a healthy win for the polls, locker room morale and recruiting momentum...

Just gotta get to the top 4

Totally agree on Elmer, not strong enough at the point, but that will come if he works at it...

McGlinchey at RT Hanratty at RG... Elmer to LG... Martin to center...Stanley at left tackle (AND OH by the way, he played great today!) Hegarty and Lombard to bench - Lombard backs up at both guard and RT Hegarty backs up Martin at C

Not sure why Martin got bumped off center this week, seems like HH is trying to make a group work together...

4 the record, count me in the camp of Hiestand doubters, since last year actually i felt players were and are still not playing to their potential

To put this in perspective, Stanford has a more talent on their oline and ran for less yard against what is probably a less talented/experienced dline.

We definitely have room to improve but go dig up the threads from this point of the season in 2012, people were saying the same thing. We've had a tremendous amount of turnover, losing our three best run blockers. You don't replace a beast like nikolaa so easily. Not to mention a martin (Think it's a coincidence that Dallas has the best rushing offense this year in the nfl?). Remain calm, the rushing game will come around.

I think we need to differentiate between pass blocking which has been very good the last two years and run blocking which has been bad. When one player is routinely being be blown up or left swinging at air, it makes the whole line look bad, but a few guys are actually playing well. Also, I felt hegarty did a great job of running down elmers man after his own man swam past him untouched. Epitome of teamwork.

I think you're misremembering the OL recruiting for the 2 years prior to last year. The classes were thin and lacking star power. We're feeling it this year.

Next year, when last year's big class are sophomores, there will be noticeable improvement.

As for the RB problem, fumbling is obviously an issue of Alford coached RB's IMO, however, I still don't like the 3 man rotation and I think that's really hurting the RB's getting into a rhythm and making the right reads.

Just disregard Stormy - he's like a Roomba vacuum - goes along sucking wind until he hits a wall (of rational thought) and then goes off sucking wind in an entirely different direction.8-)

lack of a run game + lack of overall blocking is an embarrassment.

at this point in the season to not be able to figure it out yet

is hard to believe

the inability to run with these backs that are supposed to have so much potential is making it harder on Golson to play well, harder on the play calling as it is, and makes it harder than it has to be to move the freaking ball.

I believe you just might implode into a vacuum if ND loses a game this year.

you could say to yourself "a win is a win"

but I got news for you...

that ain't a very good Stanford team

yes, they barely beat Washington

AND don't forget they beat powerhouses UC Davis and Army

but they've looked like a pile of mediocrity in their other 2 games (2 losses)

AND a lot of these problems for ND (rushing and blocking) has been seen a bit this year time and time again....
