This busy stage in my life affords me the opportunity to watch 1 full football game a week, which of course, is reserved for my Irish. Well... I spent my 1 game last night watching the K-State v. Auburn game.

I'll tell you what. Auburn did not impress me. #5 Auburn.... with an athletic QB and an SEC defense.... looked meh.

This is what I learned:

It is hard to win in college football. Even powerhouses in the almighty SEC struggles to play consistently. Notre Dame is 3-0. They've looked great at times and very "8-5" at others. What I'm realizing is, its a young team, its early in the year, and ND is very talented.

Like Lou Holtz said, ND doesn't need to look like the best team in the country each week... they just need to be better than the team lining up across from them.

The Irish are 3-0. A well-timed bye week will benefit this team. Given all the injuries and other obstacles (5 coursemen), I'm happy with what we've seen thus far. like 2012, just get the W, build momentum and get tougher each week.

Go Irish!

And at the end of the rainbow, there won't be a team like that 2012 Alabama team... We'll see about Oregon, but methinks this will be a down year...

I wouldn't call it a down year. I just think there is a lot of parity in CFB now. Everyone has athletes. Granted, you get a juggernaut the rises up here and there... but even that only lasts a few years at a time.

I'm not convinced that ND can win it all based on what I've seen thus far. But I'm happy that we avoided the early season gaff and every single team on the schedule looks beatable.... including FSU.

Although there is no team like Alabama, I wouldn't call it a down year. I think other conferences are finally beginning to catch up to the SEC. The past two years have shown the SEC's weakness as a conference on defense. This isn't a few years back when Alabama, LSU, and Florida had nasty D's. SEC defenses are a liability.

Which conference though? I am not buying into the Pac12 hype...outside Oregon, the conference has looked as bad as the B1G to be honest... USC getting demolished by Boston College? UCLA looking less than pedestrian...Stanford being unable to run the ball... The ACC has warts as well. Clemson can't play defense. UNC has struggled. FSU looks mortal. Big12 peak your fancy? K-State should have gotten a JuCo kicker to go with their all-JuCo team...That was awful last night. The more I think about it, the more I am confident Oklahoma loses this weekend. Bob Stoops is the biggest choke artist in the sport... B1G? El-Oh-El.

I'm just not seeing any dominant team. It's early though.

Although I don't think Stoops is the biggest choke artist, I do think OU loses this weekend. I said it before the season started, it's a bad spot for OU. Have to travel to WV, night game, first conference game of the season. And now we see that maybe the offense/play calling is not firing on all cylinders and Trickett/Holgerson have proved they've gotten better and their offense seems to be clicking.

i FEEL SO SORRY FOR THAT k sTATE KICKER. iF THEY WOULD HAVE JUST PUT THE BALL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD HE WOULD HAVE HIT THOSE KICKS.

OOooops!! Now for Oklahoma, I too don't think that Stoops chokes. They handled Alabama easily last year. They have a national title. But I will be watching and hoping West Virginia beats them.

i missed last weeks game for a wedding, so ill use this weekend to watch last weekend :)

It was A. Fourteen years ago B. a 13-2 snoozer of a game. C. FSU screwed Miami like they screwed us to play in that game. Both teams were 11-1 and Miami had BEATEN FSU yet FSU got to go...

And beating Alabama in a non-championship BCS game is hardly a feat worthy of mention. Remember when Utah beat them? (they are 0-3 in non-NCG BCS bowls)

Bob Stoops is a joke who has choked in every single big game he's had since 2000.

2003 Sugar Bowl? Choke

2005 Orange Bowl? Choke, 55-19

2007 Fiesta Bowl? Choke, Boise State.

2008 Fiesta Bowl? Choke, 48-28

2009 NCG game? Choke.

2012 against us? Choke. Hell that whole season was a chokefest.

Catching up. Not there yet. Most of the other conferences in the power 5 have at least a couple teams who can compete against the elite of the SEC. Look at Wisconsin against LSU, Oregon can put up points with anyone, Florida St won the National Title last year, and I think this ND and even OSU with Miller could compete or beat SEC competition. I would also add that Duke, Oklahoma, and Nebraska played great games last year against Texas A&m, Alabama, and Georgia respectfully. These conferences have a ways to go, but I don't think we will be seeing this SEC dominance like in years past.

Screw that man, that game will make you want to chew your own face off. Just watch the scUM game again!

No joke, I've fallen asleep to the Michigan game at least 4 times... I'll be feeding my daughter at 2am...and nothing allows me to sleep more soundly than watching that 3rd quarter...

Well, I'd give just about anything for a "choke" type coach that would win ND an average of 10+ games over the next 15 years and make 4 NC appearances and win 1 of those.

That sounds good in theory....but I still can't talk about the NC game without cutting myself.

I look at Oklahoma the same way I do tO$U. They are a school that will own their conference more often than not, but they suck in big games out of conference/bowls. Last year, OU did manage to beat Alabama, but that Alabama team had all but given up on the season once the NC was out of the picture.

Look at the level of competition Oklahoma plays year in, year out. You're GIFTED at least 7 wins per season. You go 3-2 against teams with winning records and you have double digit wins. The Big12 is awful. Especially since they are trying to prop up Baylor as some kind of power, even though they have two seasons since 1986, where they have one nine or more games...

And that's spot on. The reason tOSU and Oklahoma get double digit wins is because they play a few OOC cupcakes, get 3-4 gimme games in conference and then beat a few decent teams in their awful conference.

I have caught 2 or 3 Oklahoma games this year and if I were to pick right now I'd say they get a spot in the playoff. They're defense flies around, they have speed everywhere, talent galore, and do everything pretty well.

Now granted they haven't played anyone that tough based on what I've seen it's Oregon 1A, and Oklahoma 1B. If any team is a choke artist it is the Ducks, they can look like the best team 11 weeks but they always lose 1 game and I can almost bet it will happen again this season.

bye weeks are okay with me just as long as ND is undefeated,

gives me a week to have undivided attention for rooting against everybody to lose

and this season since vs purdue they aren't particularly playing well it's much appreciated

can't lose if ya don't play, time to improve the o-line and running game!

I hate that you're forcing me to defend OU.

Let's look at our schedule the last several years. You say they have 7 gimme games and 3 OOC cupcakes. Well, the last two years they played us and won one of those games. Last year we had Temple, Michigan (a 7-5 team that got beat by KSU), purdue, USC (wasn't any good), AF, Navy, Pitt, and BYU and yet we managed to drop 4 of those. I would argue much of the football world would call those "gimme games" if you take the big names off of them like Michigan and USC. I'm pretty sure that OU's SOS per Sagarin was higher than ours last year. And yet they won 11 games including beating Bama (unmotivated or not).

2012: Navy, Purdue, 8-4 Michigan, Miami, BYU, Pitt, BC, Wake Forest, bad USC. Not exactly murders row.

I'm not saying that the Big 12 is the toughest conference, but its not like ND, again if you take away the name recognition, is playing 6 great teams and 6 easy ones. We have our share of what SHOULD be "gimmee" games. Unfortunately over the past 5 years or more, we've lost even some of those gimmee games, where as OU wins them.

You know who else is averaging 10 wins a season over the past 5-6 years? Oklahoma State. A program that gets about 4th pick of the recruits around this area. One game away from playing in the NC in 2011 and beat Stanford in the Fiesta Bowl. What would you have done for a BCS win over a P5 conference champ?

I feel dirty now.

They look 12...

In other news, Syracuse is getting beat pretty badly at halftime 31-16 I believe against Maryland at home...
