"Where would we be without Drue Tranquill, said Kelly. I was sold on this kid when he was a Purdue commit and I was convinced he would be an elite linebacker at Notre Dame. Well, maybe I was wrong about him being a linebacker but he did indeed commit to Notre Dame and he is playing with reckless abandon. He's always around the ball and became the starting safety when Redfield went out.

Maybe you remember the thread on the recruiting side and how he has worked with the same trainer as Jaylon. His trainer tells us he is faster than Jaylon and he benched 225 lbs. an amazing 26 times.

I just want to say how great an opportunity has been presented to Drue and he is doing incredibly well and getting Kelly's praise. Just imagine how strong the safety position will be against Syracuse when we have Shumate, Redfield and now Tranquill in the rotation. I assume Tranquill will start the game and Redfield will sit out the first half. Yes??

Nope. Why would he.

No Redfield doesn't need to sit out any time next game since his ejection happened in the first half.

OK. I assumed he would sit half a game, thanks for the correction. Just saw that Nick Watkins actually saw the field too. Does this blow his redshirt?? Yeah, I know we don't redshirt but you know what I mean.

I think Watkins played against Rice as well. I could be wrong though.

Does this mean Redfield is out as the starter, because you can't be the starting safety if you didn't start the game. You're simply the safety. If you're the starting safety and have never started, that means this is a forward-looking statement about the future - Drue Tranquill is the new starting safety.

It's probably a slip of the tongue on somebody's part, but if we were being strict to the language, it means Redfield has been displaced.

I was thinking Redfield had to sit at least a half game and that would throw the starting nod to Tranquill. Now that also was assuming Collinsorth would not be back and Barratti would not get the nod.

Redfield is eligible to start for the next game.

We have 12 more days to prepare for Syracuse. Their quarterback is a bit scary and safety play will be critical. I'm wondering if Collinsworth will be back. It seems that by the time we play Florida State we will have 4 quality safeties in Redfield, Shumate, Collinsworth and Tranquill. How important was it to flip Tranquill?? Great kid, great attitude, speed to burn, very strong and very smart.

Hopefully we can add Hardy to that group but I doubt it.

Good news. What concerns me though is plays in consecutive games where his aggressiveness resulted is some issues for the team. One was in a blow out situation at the end of the game that caused a teammate to lose his pick 6, and this one at a crucial point in the game that could have had a more negative impact. I hope this is just a coincidence and not something that happens with any frequency. Its a fine line.

You want a kid though that plays with that aggression and needs to calm down a bit rather than expecting a kid to find aggression that isn't there. Redfield just needs to play smarter.

Agreed.... On both points

I concur. Better to err on the side of aggressive. Redfield is evolving really well, and he's had to step up a lot w/o Collinsworth. His hit on Gardner on Shumate's INT was as much of a statement rescinding Gardner's "rivalry Heisman" as the TD would have been. I know it felt great...for Max, of course. He's fine. He owes Shumate a big play, no doubt.

But Tranquill is definitely an exciting contributor to this backfield. This safety group is loaded!

Not sure where this team would be without Riggs on the outside. Seems like Russell isn't back this year if he's not back by now. I'll guess they let him pull a Golson and he gets the academics back in line for next season. Missing 3 games seems unlikely if you're innocent.

Anyway, love Drue right now!

Agree -and I am sure that CBK and coach Cooks are 'discussing' this with him - does anyone see a bit of Taylor Mays in him? I always felt that Mays (AA though he was) spent too much time, especially in his senior year, trying to add to his highlight film as opposed to executing his assignment.

I don't really put that second one on him at all. By definition, it was "targeting" but it was pretty clear there was no malicious intent. The helmet to helmet contact was caused by the fact that Etling made a very unconventional and counter-intuitive "seated" slide. Had he not done that, Redfield would have simply halted his forward momentum without event.

Even the first one is kinda small potatoes. He definitely laid into Gardner but I sure didn't know about that penalty, gardner was trying to get back in the play and it still wasn't like he went steve atwater on the kid.

I haven't thought about the possibility of having Russell back next year. That would be amazing. Getting Riggs this year was an absolute miracle. It came at the perfect time. He really stepped it up against Michigan. I'm thinking Crawford will be similar to him.

Regardless of the slide "style", a tackler needs to avoid him. Whether there was malicious intent or not, I saw no attempt by MR to slow/pull up, jump over the QB, throw his hands up, even raise his helmet level. At least in the NFL the carrier isn't down until he's touched; in college, when the slide starts you let him be. Like I said elsewhere, Redfield is an awesome athlete and could've put forth a better effort there. BK has made no whines or excuses for him, so it's baffling that some fans do.

After watching the game again last night I am absolutely thrilled with the progress of Drue Tranquill. I knew he had elite skills such as speed, strength and athleticism. I didn't know he would pick things up so fast. When he had to take over one of the safeties I was a bit concerned, but he played extremely well and he now has 9 tackles on the season. Man, when he shows up he hits hard. He is not your typical safety. He hits like a linebacker and has that 225 pounds arriving in a hurry.

He sometimes plays near the line as a linebacker and sometimes drops deep. He has the ability to do both exceptionally well. If you saw his latest interview the kid just bubbles with confidence. He learns very quickly and I could actually see him being the starter this year. Maybe Barratti's injury was a blessing in disguise for the team.

I'm projecting close to 40 tackles for Drue on the season. Many of them near the line of scrimmage.

yeah I was fairly confident in tranquills athletic skills but like you Im also surprised at how fast he's picked up the defense, specially since it took redfield nearly a whole season to get on the field.

tranquill is just an elite athlete, maybe similar to cam chancler for the seahawks.
