I take nothing from the first three weeks. A lot of teams have yet to play a solid team. I mean look at Baylor's stats and their first three games. Pathetic.

Of course, but I think at the start of the year if you had said one unit would be top 10 caliber and one would be middle if the road, you'd have switched the offense and defense.

Bingo! It's hard to take much from that given that many teams load up on tomato cans in the early part of the season.

Who would have thought we'd only have 1 turnover in 3 games!?

Good opponent, bad opponent -- didn't matter -- we'd give the ball away like candy on Halloween.

Biggest stat so far in my opinion. 0 INTs and 1 fumble lost. HUGE!

To include rankings...

Exactly. That's why I was nervous last night. The D stepped up big time once again.

Hold up there Cory. You're better than this!

Scoring Defense - Games vs. FBS (I-A) Teams Only

5th at 10.3ppg

Total Defense - Games vs. FBS (I-A) Teams Only

20th at 315.3ypg

Scoring Offense - Games vs. FBS (I-A) Teams Only

32nd at 36.3ppg

Total Offense - Games vs. FBS (I-A) Teams Only

68th at 418.0ypg

Granted...I think Purdue and Michigan might have the worst two offenses in the B1G. BUT as far as scoring defense goes...Syracuse is first...because the only FBS team they have played was CMU, who they held to 3 points

Yeah, it was more a reflection of preseason expectations being flipped than an actual statistical breakdown.

Who'd have guessed the defense would be outperforming the offense after 3 games?

how is offense being outperformed? averaging 36 ppg. that is an issue?

It is potentially an issue yes, if ND scores 36 on Stanford there will be no problem.

The offense has done pretty well so far. But the defense has done better and if you thought the defense would be better than the offense 3 weeks in, which was the point of the thread, you are lying.

the defense has done better against your own expectations?

both are playing pretty damn well against less than stiff competition.

not sure we can say one is playing better than the other.

people were still pretty iffy on defense after safety issues vs rice.

if Nd scores 24 against stanford and gives up 21 who gives a **** as long as we win.

I think that's exactly what he's saying. In his (and lots of others') mind, this season was going to feature a great offense and question marks on defense. Instead, we've almost seen the opposite. That's not to say the O has been bad, but it hasn't been elite, great, or whatever other superlative you want to stick to it. It's been serviceable but it's one-dimensional (EG creating on busted plays), the OL and running game are big question marks, and the receivers haven't exactly played perfectly either. Meanwhile, the D has played above most of our preseason expectations.

Thank you. I'm not sure why this is so difficult to understand.

The defense has been great. The offense has been ok. That is not what anyone would have had expected.

Besides, Rice is 114th in scoring D and Purdue 99th. We haven't exactly been playing a murderers row of defenses.

I think you are missing his overall point PT. If I may speak for Cory, all he is providing us with is total/scoring defense and offense stats after the first 3 games. Personally, I don't think the defense is outperforming the offense, but one is in the top 10 overall and the other is not. I think most of are surprised at how well the defense has performed thus far.

By seasons end, Michigan will have a top 25 defense FWIW.

This team has scored more points in the first games than any other Notre Dame team in over 70 years.

That has to mean something.

Thank you. I'm not sure why this is so difficult to understand.

Cory, I totally get that you are just giving stats.

Here is why I am questionging.

You say we haven't played a murderers row of defenses.

But we haven't played a murderers row of offense either.

The offense is middle of the pack (nationally that stat is true) but 36 ppg is absolutely nothing to scoff at. But we also don't play FCS competition as Piratey points out. Games that always boost PPG averages for other schools.

What were the offensive expectations to this point? 40 ppg? 45 ppg?

I still don't believe we have played good enough competition to measure our team. 3-0 is awesome, but we could end up 8-4/903 still with the tough schedule we have. We can get away with inconsistent play vs. Purdue, but not other teams that make you pay for your mistakes.
