Between Lou Holtz and Brian Kelly, our record vs our rivals was pretty dubious...

Michigan State 4-9

USC 3-10

Boston College 4-7

Michigan 5-6

Pitt 5-4

Purdue 8-5

Since then however...

Michigan State 3-1

USC 3-1

Boston College 3-0

Michigan 2-3 (grumble)

Pitt 3-1

Purdue 4-0

About the only rivalry we haven't made up ground on is the Stanford one, Kelly going 1-3 to this point(9-4 prior)

Did USC being under sanctions help? Yuuup. But ending that losing streak was key. Looking back over the last 4 years, does that 3-1 record against Michigan State look impressive? You bet it does. Purdon't, BC and Pitt being essentially put back in their place feels good.

And as for the Michigan thing...well...we left them with a taste in their mouth akin to picking up a beer at a party, taking a big swig, only to find out it was someone's chewing tobacco spitcan.

Looking forward...crush Purdue. Make it 2 outta the last 3 against that chump David Shaw. Manhandle Navy. And end the season cruise against the 9 healthy scholarship players left on USC's roster.

Good post as always, Piratey. I only see those numbers getting better these next couple seasons, including vs Stanford.

Cue the obligatory (and shallow) comments about Barkley's absence.

Right now USC looks pretty tough. Hope that changes by seasons' end.

Just curious, but based on what?

stanford gift wrapped that game for them.. fresno st. got blown out by utah 59-27.. they are incredibly thin everywhere but wr.. they will be exposed and as the season goes on their depth will hurt them

Thank you. I was about to write something similar. The execution and blunders by the Cardinal was hilarious. That game clearly could have been 21+ points the other way. Its hilarious to hear the media out here paint USC as some kind of juggernaut deserving of that ranking. They will get better, but they are far from dominating.

ESPN has them as one of the first 2 out if final 4 were determined today

I also don't get this

David Shaw is the kind of coach, that if he was playing blackjack at the casino, and was dealt a 5 and a 7, he would hold, every time.

He'd pout a lot and yell at the dealer too....

At first when I read this I thought you were saying that between Kelly and Holtz COMBINED . . . dubious, but I finally realized you were saying IN THE TIME between Lou and Brian . . .

Nice post, now that I have my head out of my a$$ and can appreciate it

Just curious, but based on what?

Based on their talent level. They have a TON of it. They can win individual match-ups against us across the board. Don't sleep on them...

I believe USC has something like 68 scholarship players on their roster...about a 1/3rd of which are frosh...They are paper thin and deficient where they need not be...

Their remaining schedule is Charmin soft, so I really wouldn't be surprised if they show up in that final game sitting at 10-1...

It looks like you are giving the Michigan wins to Tommy.

8-5, 8-5, 9-3. How many losses are you giving him?

The 1 loss to MSU was an overtime fake field goal, and the 1 loss to USC was the Dayne Crist goal line fumble that was the last straw for Brian Kelly. I think Kelly would have run the backup punter out to play QB from that point on in the season if he needed to.

The michigan record is the anomaly, and even then, ND blew a couple of games in the big house late that they should have won.

I watched most of the Stanford USC game---it was clear to me STANFORD is the better team.

The STANFORD defense seems to be the real deal--fast, aggressive, good pass rush--they really kept USC and Kessler spinning their wheels most all game.

The Stanford offense also looked better--they moved the ball and then crapped in their pants in the redzone---Easy TD --the winning TD called back for a chop block---another drive killed by back to back delay & motion penalties---they really BLEW all their opportunities.

I call USC lucky to win that game---

Would not be surprised to *** a few losses on their record by years end.

STANFORD does scare me though--I expected the defense of theirs to go DOWNHILL after the loss of their best LBs and I think their best DB but they may end up being THE BEST DEFENSE we play all yea.

Hogan is competent but not great---nonetheless---this one will be tough--USC I am NOT sold on yet despite that kind of lucky win.

aloha's

Living in Vegas, I know plenty of USC fans. I haven't spoken to one yet, that thinks they were outplayed in that game.

Myopia is a disease.

Myopia is a disease.

It's bad man. A friend of mine just yesterday asked if I saw the USC beatdown of Stanford. I carefully informed him that ND-Michigan is what a beatdown looks like. He claimed USC's defense was amazing, when most everyone else sees it as Stanford's short comings.
