totally clean hit..........

Agreed. He was even chasing the play a little bit.

It was a totally clean hit. Gardner was trying to track down Shumate after he picked him, so he was fair game like the 10 other skunkbears. I thought the ref said something about hitting a defenseless QB. What a bunch of BS. We won 37-0

If Max didn't do it Onawalu was going to. See him back off when Mad-Max hit DG?

No helmet-to-helmet. Clearly using just his upper body - chest and arms.

I do wonder whether Gardner's "arm punt" shoulder got injured. I could see that.

Yup. He wasn't just "drifting", but rather he started to turn and accelerate (at the last moment). He put himself in the play, and Redfield hit him legally.

Wanna talk illegal hit? How about the helmet to helmet crackback block on Trumbetti early?

BS call. Clean hit. Push mostly. Fu€k Michigan and the ref who threw the flag.

The QB is off limits on an interception...don't touch him.

He must be making an active attempt to make the tackle...if he is drifting he is off limits.

He rule sucks but that's the rule.

more pussification...............

That's exactly what I wanted top do to him last year myself. Max is my hero.

Exactly! Folks, Mayock explained ALL of this during the replay, but ND fans were probably raising too many drunken screams at the time.

I'm going to get killed for saying this: I found the whole thing less than classy anyway. When you're up 31, the game clock has expired, and you intercept it...you should fall to the ground. If you're a fellow defender, there's no need to deliver a crushing block (even if it's clean) when time has expired! Defenders are hopefully taught that the QB is protected, but that didn't seem to matter to Redfield.

All this said, I will give the ND defense a free pass thanks to adrenaline. When you're in the moment and mind-bogglingly jazzed about winning a huge game, you go for it all. But we fans need to chill about the call. Wacky as it was, it was the right call.

In defense of redfield, he was taught, go after the different colored jerseys...redfield said he wasn't specifically aiming for Gardner...he just happened to be wearing a different colored jersey

And I get what you're saying, but eff that...he got that INT...they don't want to be humiliated? Tackle him. Green was right there but way too slow (especially for an elite, former #1 ranked RB) to catch him

Well which one is it? Is he off limits or can you block him if he's attempting to make a tackle? You can't have both.

That was hardly a crushing blow. If you don't want your quarterback to risk getting hurt then teach him to stay out of the play.

I'd give up 6 points everyday of the week for a de-cleater on any meatchicken player. That's how you get a nickname like Mad Max to stick.

I disagree with the entire 2nd paragraph

1) A clean block is a clean block, it was Gradeners fault for not being ready. If he does not want to get hit, dont play football. Max was blocking for his teammate to get down field. DG was making a run toward Shumate, so he was part of the play.

2) Screw falling to the ground, maybe if it was a one possession game to protect the lead. Shumate made a great play, he has every right to enjoy the moment and do all he can as a football player. Every player in the country would have done the same thing in that situation. Going for the TD after a clean interception is not the same as airing it out in the 4th up 31-0.

That whole last play was stupid for so many reasons, the pussification of football. Lets not bring "sportsmanship" in there as well, it has no place in this debate.

NO.

If Michigan wants to concede defeat, then its on THEM to take a knee and the associated humiliation that comes with it. If they want ND to stop playing, its on THEM to fall to the ground in the turtle position and give up.

Otherwise, if you're on the field, you keep your head on a swivel and if you don't want to be blocked, don't chase or turn after the play. That was a clean play by Redfield and a BS call....but in the end, the humiliation of Michigan - from the ending of the series, to the announcement of a replacement with tOSU, to the complete beat down in the final scheduled game, to the last image of the series being Michigan's QB getting wiped out on a pick 6 as the fans AND the defense go crazy...perfection that I could not have dreamed up before the game.

Michigan 0.

Notre Dame 31/37/38/39.

We had a lot, they had none. Their QB got leveled because he was dumb enough to not quit....I NEVER want to see ND players quitting on the field unless its a kneel down to grant mercy...but an enemy institution, still trying to avoid the shutout?

NO.

This whole thread is validation that I'm pretty sure I was hammered enough to forget the fourth quarter...

Agreed...see Tony Romo vs 9ers

As for classy/not classy....don't kid yourself. Class went out the door when the clock hit 0.00 last year and the UM sponsored chicken dance ensued. One thing coming from fans...
