Haven't heard the entire press conference, but heard Tim Prister saying that Kelly mentioned Johnathan Bonner as someone that sticks out. Kelly said he had a 35 inch vertical which is pretty amazing for someone his size. Prister said he is now 269 pounds.

Remember he is a late bloomer and when he came into our camp he dominated. He was offered at each camp he attended. We need some depth at defensive end behind Okwara and Ishaq. It's not good when that depth is a freshman, but Bonner and Daniel Cage look to me like they will see the field, early and often.

PS: Biggest guys on the team are all freshmen. Nelson, Mokwouh and Cage are all at 325 pounds!!

lol, too bad there's the mental part of adjusting to the college level that continually gets lost when tossing around weight and speed

otherwise, let's field a team of all freshmen and called ourselves Fightin' Shiny New Toys

Kelly seemed excited about Bonner. He said he'll play linebacker but will have "his hand in the dirt" also. Kid definitely sounds like he has potential for sure.

I really think that cage is going to be a monster in the middle of our DL, just one of those big strong kids you cant move.

Coach was very complimentary of Cage but also Mokuah (Hope I have to learn to spell his name). Kelly actually said we have depth there. He's always been upbeat and I tend to believe him. Can't wait to see these guys. This freshman class might just be a huge boost to our over all defense. Linemen, linebackers and a super corner.

Just watched the press-conference...a little off-topic, but man, Kelly looks old...for comparison, I lookoed at the press-conference when he was first introduced, and he looks all happy, jubilant, and relatively young

now, you can see the toll that this job has taken on him

I think you missed the point Scotty. This isn't about the 'shiny new toys'. Those are usually running backs, receivers or somebody with blazing speed. We have a serious problem in the middle of our defense. Nobody is calling for someone to come in and make 50-60 tackles. But if you have to play a freshman, and unfortunately we will, it's best to have someone over 300 pounds and exceptionally strong. What if we were stuck with putting someone there like Trumbetti?? Thank God for the late commits that give us a fighting chance and might just save the season.

Is Rochell still on the team or did I miss something? Here's a kid that played as a true frosh and his name never brought up when discussing playing time. Hell, I've read articles about our depth that excluded him. I liked the kid. I hope he's still with the team.

Yes, Issac is doing fine---he is playing behind Romeo at defensive end--right now he is a VERY important part of the DLINE---he is big enough that if we HAVE to, we could slide him into the DT spot--or he would be good if we want to show some 3-4 looks----we'll see how things go with the two frosh Kelly was referencing there Cage and the other guy.....

It would be great if we could keep him at DE ---he would be better then Romeo against run teams at near 290Lbs..

Rochell is a talent & should play plenty

aloha's

BK had a couple of real good lines...

About where Bonner will play...and I need to paraphrase..."not sure but it will be fun to watch."

On Issac..."he just needs to go out and play"...he's done all the work and maybe he has suffered paralysis due to analysis.

Go Irish!!!

Rochell is a player that makes me feel a lot more confident about our defense, purely by the fact he is second team and I think he is a very good player. He moves very well as witnessed in the Navy game. Kelly didn't mention everybody so that doesn't concern me. When we play Navy again this year I think he will be in the starting lineup.

Rochell should make some noise this year. I was happy when he pledged. How about Jay Hayes? He should definitely get some pt now with the Springmann developments. Hayes was a 4 star coming out of hs. Have a feeling 1-2 guys are going to step up now at defensive tackle. We're going to need it.

No, you're right. I just don't like the idea of depending on freshmen. Sometimes there might not be much choice.

Mokwouh and Cage may be front and center depending on how things shake out.

As Tim Prister said, even if we had a 5 star at that position it would be a concern if he were a freshman. I remember Nix getting knocked around like a pin ball at times in his first year. But these guys have had all summer with Longo and he wanted them bigger and got it. Both of them at 325 and very strong. Let's hope Jarron Jones stays healthy as he is crucial and lets hope Cage can give him a blow beginning August 30th. I believe we will see Cage on that date. 27 days and counting.

I think Bonner will play as will 325 lb Cage and 325 lb Mokwuah. The odd part is that they are all 3* players.

Are they really three star players or is Kelly and staff that good?

Other 3* players that I have heard mentioned in the last couple of weeks that stood out this Summer.

Luatua

Tranquill

Trumbetti

Hill

Jhonny Wiliams

Blankenship?

Trumbetti is a top 100 247 composite player.

Our DB's are almost 3 deep. Fan of Tranquill but not sure how much time he'll see unless it is to spell a lb on passing downs. He would be great for covering a TE and rb.

Blankenship - GS

Luatua out of necessity.

The rest we'll see.

I like Tranquill too and think he will make the two deep at some point this year.

According to Rivals, Trumbetti is a 5.7 3* player. I think most of us go by Rivals and have for years.

I mentioned Blankenship with a question mark because I am not sure how he is predicted to do.

Jhonny Williams will be a player.
