I can't believe they are still allowed to put it out before October. It's not only meaningless without a snap played, but it also stacks the deck. A one-loss FSU is guaranteed a playoff spot thanks to sh*t like this, while a one-loss Oregon State is out -- and ND is somewhere in the middle.

I can see a magazine pumping this crap out to increase sales and buzz, but what do the coaches get out of it?

Week 1:

#9 South Carolina vs. #20 TAMU

#12 Georgia vs. #16 Clemson

#13 LSU vs. #14 Wisconsin

Week 2:

#4 Oregon vs. #8 Michigan State

#11 Stanford vs. #15 USC

That sounds good. Helps me set my viewing schedule.

I wonder how unranked Notre Dame and unranked Auburn managed to play in the title games!?

I like having numbers next to teams. I watch ranked matchups over other games every time.

I'd say that looks to be about right.

Ah, so you agree that it's stacked -- but in this case for ratings. And it works on people who simply like numbers.

Point noted about ND and Auburn. But honestly, this system makes the road that much harder for unranked teams to get there. Point out the few exceptions all you want, but this has been the rule for decades now.

This poll literally has no bearing on anything.

The only 13 people who count are the following:

Jeff Long, Barry Alvarez, Mike Gould, Pat Haden, Tom Jernstedt, Oliver Luck, Archie Manning, Tom Osborne, Dan Radakovich, Condoleezza Rice, Mike Tranghese, Steve Wieberg and Tyrone Willingham.

For decades there was a BCS that took the polls as 2/3rd of the equation. Not anymore.

Polls are fun. Polls are helpful. Polls give us something to talk about. I love the rankings

Wisconsin and USC toooooooo high IMHO

No way you can tell me that at least SOME of these guys' opinions aren't colored by the rankings -- either as the year progresses or at season's end (which BTW is affected by how the season *started*). Oh and we've seen actual interviews from at least two of these folks (Willingham & Alvarez) indicating an axe to grind with ND.

Well as long as you like them, then all is good. ;) I do agree, though, that eliminating the 2/3 thing is a step in the right direction.

Preseason polls make it so that some teams just have to win. That's a tall task, but it's nothing compared to winning AND hoping for X number of teams above you to stumble.

No need to hope because they always do.

Mostly true...and all the more reason to wait on compiling polls until several games are in the books.

USC is going to surprise you....

Lane was their only obstacle....

What's the point in waiting again? Even if you wait till October, most teams will have only played one team with a pulse to that point....

USC is going to surprise you....

Lane was their only obstacle....

the USC fan come to the defense of the Trojans once again ....

I mean, you can nitpick any of those names and attach a phantom ax to grind. At the end of the day, if the conspiracy thing is your thing, sleep happily knowing it'll all even out.

Bottom line is this: Short of four other teams ending the year undefeated, with the schedule Notre Dame plays they will be among the last four teams standing whenever they cross the finish line with 0 or 1 loss.

USC is going to surprise you....

Lane was their only obstacle....

It should never be a surprise when they are in the thick of things.

The difference now is ND is every bit as good.

Nearly an entire decade passed in which ND didn't deserve to be on the same field - but those days are done.

Week 1:

#9 South Carolina vs. #20 TAMU

#12 Georgia vs. #16 Clemson

#13 LSU vs. #14 Wisconsin

Week 2:

#4 Oregon vs. #8 Michigan State

WOW!! Usually week one has no marquee games. With this line up we can move up 2 and possibly 3 spots the first week.

With FOUR SPOTS now involved in the playoff the idea that starting low is some near insurmountable handicap is no longer a good argument.

ND for example---if we were at 10 instead of 17 I see no real benefit in holding a top 4 spot.....

If you can't get to #4 then likely you are NOT a team that should be in the playoffs....

Some of the teams with SKETCHY schedules or SMALLER PROGRAMS could STILL make it if they go undefeated---wasn't northern Illinois as high as #4 a few years back??---

I suppose an 11-1 team seeded #5 could still have strong complaints it got screwed but that's just LESS a factor then it had been.

Polls are entertaining but not as important as they were last year....I LIKE THE NEW SYSTEM!

aloha's

Completely agree. It's all hyperbole though cuz I really doubt we will lose less than two.

Ha ha .. Kinda funny considering that thought with the vaunted OWLS as our opener.
