After the title game, Brian Kelly said that Alabama is the 'Gold Standard'

Posted

And that they were what ND was trying to achieve. How can we achieve that and be more like Alabama? After last season, it still doesnt seem like we are even close.

Get better players.

Can't do that without winning a NC. Saban's recruiting went through the roof after he won a title. We gotta find a way to string together some double digit win seasons. A playoff appearance. Then the talent will start rolling in

we may not be there yet but we are much closer then we were since bob davie, ty Willingham and Charlie weis.

BK does a good job in recruiting (would like to see more elite talent signing with ND) and he's got a plan and he's sticking to it.

ND may not get to the point where we are winning 3 titles in 5 years but no reason we can't be in a Jan. bowl game every year.

I don't think we will ever be able to recruit at the same level of Alabama.

But, if we can consistently recruit top 10 classes and sprinkle in top 5 classes every couple of years, we should be able to compete for the playoffs on a yearly basis.

This will be the first year in the Kelly era where it will be hard to make excuses if the teams win 8-9 games or fewer. This should be the year that top ten classes coupled with solid coaching begin to build a consistent 10+ wins per season winner.

For me, that would be the ultimate 'Gold Standard'. A top flight academic school competing for the CFB playoffs on a yearly basis.

That mission has ... not been going well.

fify......;)

In other words... don't be ND.

I'd prefer we stay on the course we are on.... do it the right way and keep trying to attract the few elite kids that meet ND's gold standard.

That's my thoughts exactly. I expect ND to be contending for 10 wins on a perennial basis. As I've said before, no chance they can recruit like Alabama, it's not possible. However, that doesn't mean they cannot compete at a high level and play for titles. Talent is more important than anything in winning, but you still need coaching and player development.

That mission has ... not been going well.

You're such a tool. How are you selectively forgetting that ND has possibly the best collective group of soph players in the country. All your bitchin is based on bad luck with recruits over the course of a 4-5 month period. ND already has NFL talented players ON THE TEAM. All you're doing is basing the program's inevitable "failure" on a 4 month sample of failure to land recruits, in a recruiting class that isn't even finished.

I agree if they don't land a few of their targets and slide outside the Top 10 for the class of '15, that is a big deal, and it will hurt the program. However, all of that is still up in the air. Wait until you see how things unfold before you bitch about how much ND will suck. And I am not saying there won't be merit to do so, but you're putting the cart before the horse.

Those High standards also make fans hold unreasonable high expectations. Let Bama Not make the final four or get eliminated in the first game. I'd bet good there will be bama message board meltdowns. if it happens again the next season I'd expect a firenicksaben.com board to pop up.

Recruit...recruit...recruit! Win...win...win!

And recruit RKGs...

Our chances of competing in the title game are BETTER then they were in 2012----

Better QB situation the KEY to CFB success....

Better offense overall---

4 spots rather the two to compete for....

THAT ADDS UP TO A BETTER OPPORTUNITY THEN WE HAD GOING INTO 2012!

Don't SCREW WITH THE JUJU floating negative waves--;)

No, I'm going to keep bitching because there's plenty to bitch about and I'm not violating a single board policy.

Also, name calling is below you.

Kelly says that he has to shop down a different isle and that's true. Once our program starts finishing in "the game" and the top 5 consistently, we will land the physically and mentally gifted kids. Once this happens, we will be the destination of choice for the elite athletes that are RKGs.

We will be different from the SEC and should be. I think Stanford can say they are the destination of choice for the super smart and talented players. Bama has the title now as the Destination of Choice for "lets have a great time and win a NC and go to the NFL" and appeal for guys that couldn't ever get into ND or Stanford.

We have an image problem and need some marketing to change it. Instead of labeling games, for example, The Catholics against the Convicts, it could be The Somebodies against the Nobodies. When we comment on the big Alabama v LSU game we could reference it as Dumb and Dumber.

I think ND markets itself pretty well in most areas but we could do a better job and make us the Destination of Choice for talented smart kids. There are plenty of them if we would market to them on a national level. We have our own national broadcast, why not high light some of them during games?

prepare for the bowl game and not what could be potentially "the next job"

there was a clear coaching and talent disparity in that game and I am not sure which was bigger

Coaches don't tackle...and neither did our players :drum:

I think Eddie Lacy is still somewhere out there, spinning like he was Mike Vick in Madden 2004

Is ND's 'gold standard' going 8-4 and losing to crappy teams like Pitt and Michigan?

That game got him drafted in the 2nd round. To his credit though, he backed it up with a great rookie season last year for the Packers.
