piratey
IMO, Stanford seems to be getting a lot of respect. We don't need to model our recruiting or program after theirs. Here's some food for thought. We beat them 8 of the last 11 times we played them. The 3 times they beat us, they had some guy named Andrew Luck, who also turned around a 1-15 NFL franchise overnight. Having the best QB prospect in a generation temporarily elevated their program. They lost to us last year and will probably lose again to us this year. With Tommy and not EG, I think this year's game is about 50-50 or 60-40 Irish. Good point. If we beat Stanford this year, they are a 3 loss team again and no longer seen as this media darling. It also proves that it was Luck that beat us not the program as a whole. A loss to us would set their whole program back and really take the shine off David Shaw... Rockets Revenge
From Wikipedia: Trent Murphy (Trenton Allen Murphy, born December 22, 1990) is an American linebacker and a team captain for the Stanford Cardinal football team. Murphy is considered a top 3-4 defense or 4-3 defense OLB/DE prospects for the 2014 NFL Draft. Trent Murphy graduated in 2009 from Brophy College Preparatory and played football for head coach Scooter Molander. In Murphy’s junior season (2007–08) he helped back Brophy Prep to an Arizona 5A1 Division championship. As a senior in 2008-09 he served as team captain, leading Brophy to a runner-up 5A1 Division finish. Murphy also lettered in basketball and track and was the 2009 Arizona State cheerleading Champion. As someone stated, he plays a similar role to Shembo, 3-4 rush OLB with his hand on the ground a lot. He redshirted then barely played in his 2nd year. I think that is key to how Stanford develops its players. I see Bonner as a similar recruit in this years class. I think ND should model after Stanford by recruiting more cheerleading champions!! OklahomaIrish
I'm not denying developing 3* guys is a good thing, I just think you are comparing apple to oranges. Murphy plays OLB for Stanford, similar to Shembo. Shembo will put his hand in the ground as well in 4 man fronts. To compare him to guys like Blankenship and Trumbetti, who are going to play true DE in the 3-4 at 290-300 is a little inaccurate is all. I see what you are saying about finding some 3* guys and developing them and I'd agree ND needs to do that. However, I also think ND is doing much better at finding 4 and 5* kids to develop and I'd rather they focus on that. If a Trent Murphy comes along every now and then, great, but I'd rather be developing guys like Ishaq, Jaylon and Ben Councell at OLB. Of course I want the 4 and 5 star guys and I'm not saying to do exactly as Stanford does. I just didn't see the elite big guys but was looking for a silver lining. I found it by looking at how Stanford developed these guys. Blankenship is playing outside linebacker right now. He will certainly be a DE the way he is growing. Regardless, these are the front 4 or 5 guys on the line of scrimmage and if I can't have Tuitt or Shembo I'll darn sure take a Murphy. Edited to show I am now considering looking at cheerleaders. OklahomaIrish
I was just checking the national ncaa stats on the sack leaders. Trent Murphy is 3rd only 1/2 sack off the lead with 9.5 sacks. Not surprised. I only saw him one game and I was very impressed.

OklahomaIrish
This is why I tell people don't even look at our game with Stanford until it is within a couple weeks. Things change. People get hurt. People get better. Just look how Tommy is playing. Look at the emergence of Folston Robinson and Fuller. Look at Jaylon Smith. Each week things are looking better. I know we have injuries but Nix will come back strong. We have depth on the O line.

I know Tommy has looked better, but one thing in observing his career the past 3 years is that I can expect the unexpected both positive and negative. Aside from that, this man crush you have on Trent is borderline embarrassing. Lol.

OklahomaIrish
With Ben Gardner out, Trent Murphy's job gets harder since teams can focus more on him. This is true. This will cost Stanford against Oregon and against us. I think Tommy is peaking. I'm very optimistic about how we finish this season. As far as the man crush. Hey, this is an Irish guy that wasn't that highly recruited but is now a super player. I think you will see similar production from Blankenship in our next recruiting class. Under the radar, but superior height, speed and athleticism.
