Hypothetical Head Coach Short-list

Recommended Posts

Since we are looking for great offensive minds, this guy is available:

To me, if I were an AD, he'd have been off my list way back when he lied to Louisville and met with the Auburn AD in a cornfield in southern Indiana near the beginning of his run at UL (unless I were AD at a stepping stone school like Indiana or Virginia).

Huh...interesting idea. I forgot that he coached during the last Miami Championship. Be interesting to see what he does in Cleveland. If he wins here, he'll get a lifetime contract. If he gets fired from being a "Browns-like" head coach, then, well, I'm not sure we'd want him.

Could eventually be a Pete Carroll like hire.

Rob Chudzinksi - would be a SOLID hire...but hell bring back LOU HOLTZ!!!!

This is a BS thread and should be removed. This is a prime example of a crap group of "fans" who ruin sports and drive the coaching market to be what it is, a rush to judgement world. You're either on the teams side, or you're in the way. Choose one!

the word hypothetical got lost, huh? lol

not sure what's ruining sports but I guess you're one of the delusional types that thinks players/coaches visit here for info.

Yeah, once again, lack of reading comprehension. This isn't a fire Kelly thread. This is, again, a hypothetical concept where you act as the AD. As AD, would you be reactionary, or would you be like the best AD's in the country and maintain a short list of whom you'd want to hire should something come up.

Not push anyone out. Not fire anyone. Not expect Kelly to go to NFL. Just, be prepared. Who would you keep an eye on.

And by railing against what you "think" this thread is, you're only trying n make it that. It never was that, but you're trying to make it that. Thanks.

But, I guess this forum can't have a thread that is completely separate of "Kelly is god" or "Fire Kelly". I guess w

Do you think Jack Swarbrick has spent zero time thinking about who the next coach of ND will be? Brian Kelly's meetings with the Eagles were just to talk about the city of Philadelphia?

My backup plan for divorce..... Don't get married! A dying and archaic institution. I subscribe to a 3-4 year contract with an option for renewal for my bit**es and coaches.

Wow. So, according to you, every post in this forum must be "Brian Kelly is God" or "All is well and always will be"? Not even a fun, fantasy style, off to the side thread that doesn't even make a statement either way about Brian Kelly? Would it be better if I made up a fake University named....say.....Heisenberg University (obviously, a chemistry focused school), and said this thread was theoretically taking place there?

And last time we had a coaching search, we were lambasting Swarbrick for not having a list already going in his back pocket and saying that any good AD would have one. So, we want a good AD, but if they do good AD stuff, we think they're awful. You must be fun to have a beer with.

One name I'd like to throw in is Gus Malzahn. Dude has a helluva offensive mind.

Nothing against Gus, because he might be a tremenous candidate.

But for me, Notre Dame and big-time college football in general is so much bigger than "scheme" or offensive or defensive "minds"

It's about program building and leadership and message and organization and recruiting and hiring the right assistant coaches and navigating through the various political fractions on your campus and inspiring belief and conviction from your staff and players.

Notre Dame's biggest mistake over the years was hiring coaches who fell woefully short in some, most or all of those areas and it set us back decades.

Which is why I think you hang on to Brian Kelly for dear life, as he hits every single one of those marks.

That said, if he decided to leave or did something to get himself fired this would be my short list:

Kevin Sumlin (the complete package)

Bill O'Brien

Gary Patterson

Art Briles

(i'm not putting Shaw here because I don't think he'd leave Stanford, his dream job, for anything less than the NFL)
