Kelly Bashing

There's been alot of it lately, and I have been frustrated too. I will have to say that before Kelly came it was miserable to watch. He took this team to a new level. We are upset that we aren't undefeated. The expectations have changed now. We went to the championship game last year. Now we feel that should be every year. We are playing with an imobile qb that really kills the run game also. We lost alot of talent on defense and our star qb. I have found myself screaming at the play calling and frustrated also but in the end Kelly has brought ND back and it will show when we have a qb. I feel like others that we would be undeated if Golson was playing. There will be seasons like this at ND but Kelly has raised our expectations and maybe the get rid of him talk is a little extreme. He isn't playing with the same deck of cards as SEC schools. It's a little more difficult at ND.

Haven't you heard? Coach bashing and continuous second guessing is the norm now in all sports. It really is a mystery to me that schools and pro teams for that matter don't find their next HC or Manager on the Internet. I mean people know everything on the Internet.

I don't think what is happening here is coach bashing. As fans who grace this forum, we watch the team with a closer eye then most.

No one is saying Kelly lost two games so he is bad.

Posters are pointing out seemingly accurate shortcomings of his four years here.

Losing a number of 5* recruits. Continued poor special teams. Lack of development in the secondary. Lack of development at QB.

These things are facts that will impact the development and future of the program, regardless of current won-loss record. While important, seasonal won-loss records aren't a true end all be all, program development and growth are.

A guy like Saban has proven he can build a program regardless of who is playing. A guy like Chizik won a national title with Newton and was fired two years later. He developed a one year program of success that wasn't sustainable once he lost a transcendent talent. Saban has proven to develop that win consistent with different players.

Hopefully Kellg is more Saban than Chizik, but plenty of coaches have had one great year and were unable to sustain it. The great ones turn in great years year after year.

I believe Kelly is a great one...or at least hopefully the next great one.

No matter what you say ND is different...different place to coach, recruit, and attend. That's makes it difficult year in and year out to go 12-0.

I mean Lou lost 5* recruits for the same reason and admission standards were lowered for his kids then. And I know people get upset when we loose guys but it happens everywhere!

Saban over signs every year....every year! How? Every year certain guys leave...every year. And some of those he signs don't ever make it to campus for one reason or another. Texas A&M had over 30 recruits for this incoming class at one point...Look at the mess at Ok St. A ton of big recruits have left there over the last 10 years. Urban Meyer gets a certain amount of kids in "regardless of academic achievement" (at Florida he had 6 per class). So there retrntion isn't high.

Kelly is doing great...winning with a QB who is NOT a D-1 athlete with that crazy schedule, dealing with academic demands, and recruiting despite ****** weather all add up to a freakn amazing job!!

Just saying

Bill Belichick has a great quote that summed up says this:

"No matter if you agree or not, every decision we make is all in an effort to win"

And every decision Kelly and staff is a decision to improve and WIN.

Kelly knows he has to build depth, but it can't happen overnight.

Special teams (kickoffs, punting and FGs) have been pretty solid at Notre Dame. I mean, wasn't Ruffer a field goal of the year kicker finalist in 2010?

And Brindza has punted well this season. Here is his track record at ND:

• Single-Game Field Goals (Nov. 24, 2012 at USC, 5, t-1st)

• Single-Game Points (Nov. 24, 2012 at USC, 16, t-4th)

• Single-Season Scoring By Place Kicker (2012, 97, 1st)

• Single-Season Field Goals (2012, 23, 1st)

• Single-Season Field Goals Attempted (2012, 31, 1st)

• Single-Season Scoring (2012, 97, 7th)

• Career Consecutive Field Goals (2012, 8, t-8th)

And the kid basically scored all the points in the win vs USC that sent us to National Title game. He made 5 of 6 including the tying the all-time ND record.

We know punt returns standout as wanting to be better. T.J. had a really sharp return vs. ASU. But I think Kelly wants ball security on punts before all else. Ask yourself this, how many punt returns have we fumbled and lost? I bet it is close to zero. Kelly knows a fumbled punt CAN TOTALLY change a game. And he knows ND can't win with mistakes. So he is making the smart move, not the "message board" move. After 2011, his philosophy is winning by no mistakes, playing good defense and playing efficiently. We lost SO MANY games that year not cause we weren't the better team but solely because of taking sloppy care of the ball.

Brian Kelly and staff are smarter than all of us when it comes to running a football program. They just are. So don't try to debate it. You can try to make "factual" points about your "opinion" on what Kelly should be doing better, but we don't have all the data.

And you bring up Saban, but we ALL KNOW, that Alabama recruit differently and lives by a different set of rules. I mean, we hear of two players being paid? and I think they both admitted to it. Also, I think they over-sign and then cut kids if they don't make the team.

There's a reason Urban probably went to Ohio State and NOT notre dame. He wanted to be king of the castle. And he has that with the Buckeyes.

BK showed up at ND and changed the entire face of the program by proving it COULD be done, and making us relevant AGAIN in the eyes of the kids that weren't born during our last national title.

You can all jump all over me for an opinion you are well aware of.

But please, I would love for you to have all the facts of what happens behind closed doors, all conversations, interactions, etc. before bashing people in general.

I would still like to see all the other schools number of recruits lost. I know ND has lost a lot (and I was most bummed by Vanderdoes and Greenberry). But we don't know if it was the fault of the staff why they left. So no matter how strongly you feel, you can't just go blaming them as a matter of "fact." It is only your opinion.

ADDITION: Has a Kelly team at ND ever given up a special teams touchdown on kick return or punt return?

ok i'm sorry but people need to stop saying ND plays a hard schedule... it's not

Temple....crap

Michigan...overrated every year

Purdue....crap

Mstate....overrated every year

Okla..... good team but not a top team,no dought in my mind we win if not for the ints

ASU... up and coming but not very good

USC.... Still a good team

AF...crap

Navy....crap

Pitt.....crap

BYU...decent

Stanford.... top team, will show us were we stand

A great team steamrolls through this schedule with maybe 1 loss

we already lost 2 and haven't looked good in the victory's

Even with Rees at QB a good team on the up developing there talent and with 5* everywere

should not be having trouble with this schedule.... that's why there is so many ?'s around Kelly

Agreed. Nothing looks easy this year for the Irish. And notwithstanding Miami last year, nothing looked easy then either.

Couple questions:

You say we are not a good team.

But you say USC still a good team.

And we beat Temple as bad as Louisville did. (tommy had better numbers than bridgewater. although I'm not saying rees is better than bridgewater.)

We also haven't played half this sked.

I agree with you on Oklahoma.

And I believe Michigan Upset us on the road. Devin Gardner played the game of his life and hasn't looked good since. We also had a key turnover and missed too many tackles. Something our D has improved on. So IF we can get to 9-2 heading into a road game at Stanford, it is the best we can do at this point.

Once Kelly can oversign recruits and then pick the best available out of that lot and grayshirt the rest (rinse and repeat year after year), and once he's able to recruit elite players with substantial academic problems who barely meet the minimum NCAA requirements, and once he can get boosters/coaches to help out players with cash loans, and once he can get ND to spend millions of dollars a year on recruiting, and once Kelly can gain complete control over school disciplinary action so as to retain the Golson's, the drug users, the drunken assaulters without being expelled and greatly affecting the season; then and only then will I hold him to Saban's level.

And Saban's done this at every stop.

I remember his Toledo days back in the late 80s and his MSU days after. All of them had their serious warts so this isn't something new for him. Yeah, he wins everywhere and is a HOF coach, no doubt. But he's a sleazeball too and has had all the breaks of programs who win at all costs. ND is not one of those programs and Kelly will have to win the right way. But if he does go on a run like Saban sans the dirt, he'll be a HOF coach too. I think he can.

But for me, it's hard to compare a coach who has had all the 'advantages' to win to a coach who has to obey a much tougher set of rules set forth by the university which are draconian compared to the NCAA rules that Saban's been known to break at all stops of his employment. It really is an uneven playing field. If Kelly gets ND to where Alabama is now, he'll be a legend and without the all the dirt. And this is very possible although it will take longer due to ND's standards. Remember 'Bama a decade ago? They were awful. A good coach plus all those advantages changed that around pretty quickly. ND has a good coach and he's getting the talent at the rate he can, and if last year is any indicator of doing more without all the crazy depth of 'Bama, then ND and Kelly can make an Alabama run. It won't be this year obviously, but it's coming. The cycle is slowly turning back towards a dominant ND team.

**as an aside, I give a lot of credit to Stanford. but having said that, they haven't made it to the natty like ND did last year so I can't say they're better

We do fight with one hand tied behind our back that's for sure.

But after Cam carries 5 times in a row, it would be nice to see a play action fake to him. Know what I'm saying?

Why so many heart attack close games with inferior teams?

Kelly's decent. If Saban was here under the same restrictions maybe he couldn't do any better in terms of wins. But I bet he rolls the Purdues.

Possible we could go 8-4 this year. Next year as well with the losses on OL and DL. Watching the games, I'm not yelling at the screen "Yes great call"!

Look like it will take some more time to get back to 10 wins a year on a regular basis.

Kelly has got to have that QB piece in place for it to work.

That schedule is harder than every schedule in the Big Ten, arguably the PAC12, ACC, BIG 12...etc and would rank towards the top at most other conference schedules too. Notice, not one FCS opponent, not two FCS opponents, not 2 FCS opponents followed by two MAC schools, not 2 MAC schools back to back to start the season followed by a cream puff and then an FCS school...etc. If you want to blast ND's schedule, at least compare their schedule to the rest of the college football world.

I also think that Kelly is not going to lose a game again due to a fake punt which is why you see a ton of fair catches as well, given all the blockers are swarming the LOS to help prevent a fake. Ferentz seems to be reconsidering this approach as well...

ND has the 9th toughest SOS as indicated by several computer programs and experts. I will take their analysis over your opinion.

Should we play the AP Top 12 in order every year??

Just for sh!ts & giggles lets line up the ND schedule against the mighty Bama schedule from toughest to easiest. I used AP rankings when available. After that it is based on record and my educated opinion.

#5 Stanford > #9 aTm

#12 OU < #10 LSU

#18 Michigan > #24 Va Tech

Mich State < Auburn

ASU = Ole Miss

USC > Arkansas

BYU > Tennessee

Pitt < Miss State

Navy = Kentuckey

Purdue = Colorado State

Air Force > Chattanooga (FCS)

Temple > Ga State (FCS 0-5)

So, the tally is 6-3-3. You can argue a couple of the outcomes and/or matchups. You can maybe argue Bama's schedule is equal to ND's if you are a ND "realist" or Bama sympathizer. You CANNOT argue that Bama's schedule is hands down tougher top to bottom than ND's.

In fact, I would challenge you to find an AP Top 15 team that has a significantly tougher schedule top to bottom than ND does. I would rate LSU and Georgia marginally tougher but that is about it.

You had me until I saw this. Do you honestly believe that every effective running team has a mobile quarterback or runs the option? Seriously. Wisconsin has had an immobile QB for years (with the exception of one) and have a great running game. Iowa has had a great running game for years without a mobile QB. Please don't look at this and compare WI/IA to ND. I am just saying that if we played RBs that were able to make guys missed on a consistent basis, we would have a great running game and it would open up the pass with PA. And THAT is my frustration with Kelly. There is NO REASON to put Tommy in a empty set outside of extremely limited situations and Kelly is letting it happen game after game after game. I disagree with the personnel decisions but I don't know the whole story. What I do know is that Tommy is not statistically playing well with a empty set and Tommy ain't running the ball so there is no reason to continue with that formation with the frequency Kelly is using it.

I think the point was having a Kelly spread offense, the run game is quite hindered with Rees at the helm. Kelly's offense isn't Wisconsin's offense. With Golson, we see in any given game, traps, counters, pulls...etc that allow him to pick a lane or simply handoff or throw it. With Rees, it's max protect for the most part, and if Tommy hands it off the defense has LBs waiting for fill the gaps due to his limited arm strength. They can kind of pin their ears back until they know if it's going to be a pass or a run since Rees doesn't have the laser arm like Golson nor the running ability to keep them on their toes. You can't fill a hole if you're concerned with an outside QB run, hence opening up the middle for a nice Oklahoma-like gash. But Kelly's offense is not a Wiscy offense so you can't compare the run games relying or not relying on the mobility of the passer.
