The Kelly conundrum

It's odd that after 4 seasons, I don't know what to make of Kelly for certain.

There are positives:

Undefeated season.

Recruiting well.

But there are negatives:

Only 19-12 without Golson/transcendent D.

Lack of development in area of team (QB, LB, DB)

There are obviously more on both sides. I don't intend this to be a "fire Kelly" thread, as I don't think he's anywhere near that at this point.

I just usually feel after 3-4 seasons you know what you have in a coach. I don't get that feeling with Kelly.

On one hand, he got to the title game. On the other, who wouldn't have with that defense.

One one hand, he made Golson look pretty good as a RS Frosh. On the other hand, Rees seems to be worse as a senior.

One one hand, the recruiting seems to be going well. On the other hand, there is an exodus of players.

On one hand, his overall record is pretty solid. On the other hand, consistency seems to be an issue.

One one hand, it "appears" ND has talent all over the field. On the other hand, it "appears" that ND is not playing to it's level.

Just sort of a conundrum.

He's forever tainted in my eyes with the Tulsa fiasco. If ever the school needed a win, it was after that week that was... to muff that up royally is inexcusable...

I might have forgiven him if we'd handed it to Alabama, but we didn't so I'll continue to hang on to that.

My take on it is that his inflexibility will be his downfall...

Seriously? He'll be forever tainted because they lost a game his first season where he had to play a true freshman QB who, from reading this board, is the worst QB to ever wear gold and blue?

Nothing peronal, but the good news for the rest of us is Jack Swarbrick isn't nearly as in decisive as some of the wishy washy fans we have.

Brian Kelly is the best thing Notre Dame's got going for itself by a country mile.

Our back-up quarterback threw three picks - two of which directly led to 14 points and the other one creating a 14-point swing - and we lost to a top 15 team by exactly 14 points.

The fact we were still in that game after giving the ball away three back-breaking times is testitment to how good a coach Brian is.

We will soon have our quarterback back, and it will make all the difference.

I think that Rees can actually be considered our third-string QB. If Kiel hadn't transferred before Golson's dismissal, he'd be the starter.

Too easy to blame transfers on the kids being flaky..

1, 2? Ok... How many before we start questioning how the staff is handling these matters?

Kiel's transfer had everything to do with the fact that if he stayed, he would only have one season to play because Golson was the entrenched starter.

So...no, I don't blame the staff on how this was handled.

EG was one run away from a concussion every time he tucked the ball....the guy was scary and would put his body at risk WAY more than he needed to

How can Kiel not see that? If not, How could the coaching staff subtly let him know about the possibility? How do you let that kind of talent go?

Sometimes, you gotta know how to manipulate...for the greater good

What was EV promised? Or he's just a flake, right?

Lynch...i can give you Lynch...but still, whole lot of unhappy players here

Hindsight is 20/20. What did you want Kelly to do, kidnap Kiel's family? If the kid wants to transfer, you let him transfer.

So you want Kelly to manipulate the situation to make Kiel stick around, and then bring up EV (who said he was misled about course work/something else at ND)? Hypocrisy.
