Offensive Captain Tommy

“Tommy Rees finally took this team over,” Kelly said. “He took them on the bench and surrounded himself with everybody and started talking to them like it’s his team. He’s been the quarterback, but now it’s his team. It was a huge moment in the second half where he said, ‘Listen, this is my team and we’re going to win this football game.’”

So Tommy finally took this team over. I actually saw this on the sideline and it was awesome. It looked like Tom Brady doing this with the Patriots.

It was a huge moment.

But the serious question is, if Brian hoped or expected Tommy to do this, why isn't he the captain. We have a weird situation as far as captains go right now. I would say, based on the this, Tommy is clearly the offensive captain right now....

Well kicking a cop a year ago probably didn't fit the description of "captain" at ND. I could be wrong though...

In the abstract there is "potential" truth in that observation--tommy had a nice second half and did take charge---I watched the replay in on espnu last night--GEEEZ HE FOUND A NEW FLOYD IN DD--HE WAS A MAN IN A SECONDARY OF BOYS!!!

BUT it remains to be seen if tommy can continue that with any consistency---I DO GRUDGINGLY ADMIT MY CONFIDENCE IN TOMMY HAS RISEN JUST LIKE COACH----don't make me eat those words Mr. Rees--

Personally I think he will play well enough to win plenty of games--BUT HE CAN'T CONTOL THE DEFENSE!!!!!

So Coach--its nice you have confidence in tommy as THE LEADER of the offense---BUT YOU GUYS BETTER GET HIM SOME DEFENSIVE HELP!!

On a side note I don't think those comments indicate malik is likely to see any action very soon---

Thanks Hawaii for a "on topic" response.

So do you think Coach didn't have confidence in tommy in the fall, even though he said he did?????

Maybe not, and maybe that's why he wasn't named captain....

I think coach was in LOVE with EG---the way he spoke of him in interviews it was transparent---

He had BIG PLANS--faster Tempo--- sky high hopes--lots of variety in plays--and another BCS appearance!

And even though he handled it well publically I bet he was as traumatized by golson dumb *** move as I was---

He has confidence in tommy and always has ND1989 but not close to the confidence he has the other fella---"we don't want to take any chances with Everett Golson" coach says with reverence when referencing his small concussion---

Its taken some time to adjust--MY HOPE IS THAT TIME HAS PAST FOR COACH STAFF & TEAM--and that we are finally ready TO PLAY SOME FOOOOTBALLL!!!!

I'm not so sure that Kelly was waiting for Tommy to step up on the field. Tommy seems to have put the work in and been a leader behind the scenes. The QB position at Notre Dame I think has a heightened sense of pressure so I believe to be "captain", Kelly wanted Tommy to grab the team by the balls and run with it.

The moment Tommy was talking to the team on the sidelines, I turned to my girlfriend and said (in pimply teenage voice, if you can picture that) guys coach said we could look at the playboys on the bus ride home if we win...

not as funny now, but we were rolling when I said it. I think partly because we never saw him do that before.

It will be a huge moment when he can play like Tom Brady.

Last year all we heard was how much everyone liked Tommy and played for him when he came in for Golson. Same stuff this year when Tommy was starter. Everyone just loved him and loved playing for him.

Now suddenly it's his team because he says a few things on the sideline?

I'm not sure it will ever be a moment where he can play like Tom Brady. For him to lead like Tom Brady, is a good first step.

But I think there's got to be a certain level of frustration with the other captains on offense. Why aren't they doing this? Isn't this what you want a captain to do? Why did it take until the 3rd game for a non-captain to do this? Maybe our current captains on offense need to lose their stripes....

I don't know how much football you've played, but yelling and rallying the troops looks great on TV, but it is pretty meaningless in the big picture.

I mean, is Chris Watt going to block harder once Tommy pumps him up?

The Irish Connectipn video showed Tommy rallying the troops vs Michigan. How did that work out?

I have not been a big fan of Rees but I did like the way he came out in the second half and one thing I do like having him in instead of EG is we can actually snap the ball without looking over to the sidelines twice every snap. But I guess it was understandable with having EG in there.

I think this is another one of those "only those that have coached (or played) have a valid opinion" responses?? Not that again -- PT, STAY AWAY!

All I know, is motivation is an amazing tool. Did the Irish play harder for Knute Rockne when he told the story about the Gipper? Did the Irish play harder for Lou when he brought in a disabled vet prior to USC? Did the Irish play harder for Dan Devine when he came out in Green? (although it never seemed to work for Charlie....)

I didn't see that. Do you have a link? I didn't see it at the MI game, and Brian never mentioned that he did that.
