Do you guys even consider home games an advantage?

When teams come to Notre Dame it's almost like a trip to Disney World for a kid, it's something opposing players look forward too. Something they've dreamed of probably, there always seems to be excitement from opposing coaches and players. Never do you see a bit of fear or intimidation, it's almost like they want to play on the road here. I think part comes from the fact it's Notre Dame and the other half is because the stadium is never that loud.

I know this is a hot topic that's been discussed here a bit but whens it ever gonna change? do you guys think it ever will? There's the debate that there's too many old people who sit down and are silent all game. There's talk of how ushers won't tell people to sit and all this but it seems the same. I get the crowd is more into it for a game against USC than Temple but even when you compare that it's still not that loud or energetic.

You will never see a player with joy or looking forward to playing on the road at Oregon, Florida State, Florida, LSU, Michigan, Clemson, A&M, or Ohio State. The opposing team always fears going into a place like that. They have the big Jumbotron telling everyone to make noise, everyone is dressed in the same colour, people are standing and cheering LOUD the entire game, and they're flailing pompoms and stuff like the Michigan game. The showed that crowd before the game and I just had a bad feeling, they make it real tough on opposing teams.

I even think teams like Iowa and and MSU have better home crowds. I mean we're at a disadvantage enough because we have high academic standards and don't cheat. Also keep in mind ND students spend much more time studying, where other teams players have more time to train/workout etc... We can't keep up with the fact that opposing teams actually look forward to playing at Notre Dame stadium. We need to strike fear in other teams because it's just working against us.

IDC about the traditions and all that crap, some of it has to end and we have to come to the present time. We need to have the stadium in all one colour, we need to be loud, we need something like towels or pom poms to flail around, and we need a damn energetic atmosphere. I'd like to hear what you guys think because I think it puts us at a major disadvantage where it should be a huge advantage for us.

We do not now have much of a home field advantage --that's unfortunate but its just another CROSS TO BEAR---

You saw the home field advantage last week at that horrible place in ann arbor--we cannot come close to matching that.

There are several endemic problems --

First among them we have a TINY student body compared to other places----we just can't put 40000 students and such in the seats--

Second we have generally poor acoustics compared to some other venues--

Noise is the KEY advantage in home field and unless we pull an indy colts and start piping in the screaming from ann arbor that we tape & reuse---;) --there is no real way to mitigate that ---bigger game of course means bigger noise and once in awhile it actually gets NOISY but it isn't easy and its hard to sustain given those other factors.

We also have a poor winning tradition in this stadium since the darker days started 15 years ago--so there is none of that "they won 32 out of 34 at home" intimidation factor at work.--

then of course there is the other MICHIGAN factor--we saw this even last week IMHO---HOME CONFERENCE REFS that give your guys the benefit of the doubt---We are independent and so lets just add some weight to that HOME FIELD CROSS WE CARRY---;)---no home town refs--over two or three years you can win a couple or three BIG GAMES with some ref generosity.

So--older less hyper crowd by leaps & bounds mean less noise---poor acoustics means less noise--no conference means less home town calls---

That leaves us with one of the weakest home field advantage of ANY BIG PROGRAM----hard to even add those vegas 3 points for our home field advantage.--WE LIKELY HAVE THE BIGGEST MOST PASSIONATE FAN BASE OF ANY SCHOOL___BUT THEY AREN'T THERE ON SATURDAY IRONICALLY AND OFFER ONLY PRESSURE TO WIN WITHOUT THE ASSOCIATED GAME DAY FRENZY!

Its a tough one--

aloha's go irish!

Glad you caught that

Yeah we might have a long winning streak now but how was it before? not so good. Even the years we were pretty good we still lost at home, we got some pretty lucky breaks at home to just to mention. We went on a home winning streak basically because we went undefeated, the 'lack' of homefield advantage had nothing to do with it.

Point being the energy needs to pickup in the stadium, too many times opposing fans have gotten humour out of the silence in the stadium.

My God. All the DD's are manic depressives. One second a high the next we suck. Take a pill.

You don't need to worry about that scary nightmare about Willingham. I know everytime a play doesn't go right - you have flash backs and panic attacks. You have visions of Willingham sitting on your couch and not leaving - night after night. Its called Post Willingham Disorder or PWD. It happens at all the schools he goes to.

Others have a similar disorder with the same initials - PWD or Post Weis Disorder. You have visions of

ND has a small student body - but virtually all go to the game.

ND took it up a 5 notches last year after years of bad coaching / recruiting abuse.

The OL looks pretty damn solid, etc, etc.

Gonna reply to own message...interesting facts...tired of all these new threads...

11.Eleven freshmen have played in 2013 including Jaylon Smith, Steve Elmer, Max Redfield, William Fuller, James Onwualu, Cole Luke, Corey Robinson, Isaac Rochell, Greg Bryant, Tarean Folston and Devin Butler.

10.Notre Dame has played 18 games decided by a TD or less since the arrival of Brian Kelly in 2010. The Irish went 2-5 in the first seven games, but have since gone 10-1.

9.The Irish have won nine consecutive games at Notre Dame Stadium. Notre Dame has not registered 10 straight wins at home since Oct. 25, 1997-Aug. 28, 1999.

8.The Notre Dame-Michigan State game has been decided with the game-winning score coming late in the fourth quarter or overtime in eight of the last 13 meetings.

7.Senior QB Tommy Rees ranks seventh in the FBS in passing yards (969), but no one has thrown for more yards against FBS opponents in 2013. Rees has registered seven completions of at least 32 yards. Irish signal callers recorded 11 such passes all of last year.

6.Notre Dame has won six consecutive games under head coach Brian Kelly when the game was decided by a TD or less. He is tied with Lou Holtz for fourth on the all-time Notre Dame list.

5.Notre Dame has allowed an average of 18.31 points/game over the last four seasons combined, which ranks as the fifth-best average of any team in the FBS.

4.Notre Dame has limited Michigan State to four rushing first downs combined in the last two meetings in the series.

3.Brian Kelly is one of seven FBS coaches that have guided their respective schools to an undefeated regular season since 2009. Three of those head coaches, including Kelly, have done it on multiple occasions.

2.Two Notre Dame quarterbacks have passed for more than 300 yards in each of the first three games of a season. Senior Tommy Rees joined Jimmy Clausen (2009) for that distinction with 346 (Temple), 314 (Michigan) and 309 (Purdue). He could become the first to do it in the first four contests.

1.Among college coaches with at least five years of service or 50 victories at a school that was classified as a major college, only one head coach ever reached 200 career victories at a younger age than Brian Kelly.

2.No FBS defense has allowed fewer rushing touchdowns than the 15 by Notre Dame over the last 33 games. Alabama has limited its opponents to 16.

I feel you in this point. I just don't know if the decision makers believe it is a problem. We have debated the obvious for awhile. I am in the jumbotron camp that could have an immediate affect. Also, I want our team to enter last damn it. How about hiring up and coming bands to play at half time. Hand out/sell green " Get an Irish smack today" signs/towels? Designate a place in the stadium for sitters only?

I don't know how many of you have been to a game recently, but the last two years have been great. With the noise pumped in, and the team playing better, it's been awesome. It's loud, it's fun, people are standing for the entire game.

I would say, some of the best and loudest games have been in the past two years. Michigan, Stanford, Pitt were all amazing.

the noise level is fine.

I talked about this a couple of days ago, teams are not scared of ND at all, the team and the stadium. I've talked to opposing players that i know asking them about that and they said they couldn't wait to go.....

I remember back in the day when i did what i do for Miami and opposing players and there parents were afraid of going to the Orange Bowl, the players would crap there caps before going on the field....

trust me, alot of games back then were won before the game even started....

Until we get nasty and just beat people down with no mercy, were never going to have that...

Well, it really is a magical place...it's the Disney World of college football so I can see why people are excited to go there...

And I think the most important point made so far is the small student body section.

I don't know if it is quite that simple. ND has around 9,000 undergrads. Clemson has 16,000. More yes, but not double or triple like a state school.

And that place rocks hard during games.
