Also similar comments from Purdue's HC, about ND's tendency's and how his team was prepared for it. Are we that obvious based on the formation what we will do? Some examploes were Niklas Koyack wide, run that way, and a few others. Hopefully Kelly/Martin get a clue this week and start to do multiple things out of the same formation.... Dayton_Domer 0
I doubt it. I really hope there's more to the Kelly playbook than the crap we've seen so far.
ckp160 10
I believe Alabama said the same thing after they rolled The Irish in the NCG. They watched a lot of film, and knew exactly where the play was going. Defense and offense.
Incurorish 0
Not surprised. We are predictable. Thing is I can't decide if our play is being dictated by our personnel or our staff. Someone last night said they were sick of Kelly saying we play what the opposing team gives us instead of us dictating what they play. Since the loss to Bama, these are things I've been pondering and hoping that this staff is the godsend everyone thought/thinks they are. Something I liked about Harbaugh was his intensity every second of the game. His teams always played like they had a chip on their shoulder. I'm not getting that sense out of Kelly and Co. We seem too reactionary at this point.....
suhoney24 0
we really really are missing golson...at least with him the defense had to at least keep an eye on him because of his running ability...with tommy if he drops back then the d can pretty much drop into coverage because he is no real threat to take off

They knew what plays we were going to run yet they still lost the game? Yeah coach maybe you should keep that to yourself. Typical purdue BS. Their players were running their mouths all night from the sidelines when they were winning. At the end of the game they all had their heads down like the losers they are accustomed to being

They just didn't have the horses to make the plays down the stretch. We need to do a better job of self scouting our own tendencies and maybe drawing up some new plays. kamman 0
My first post on here. After watching the game we need to throw it deep. Teams can't hang with Daniels and Brown. We need to do play action and let it go, or even fake the quick pass and just throw it deep.

I loooong for when we start to beat these lessers teams into submission ON A REGULAR BASIS Only then will ND be back. Only then will these teams stop getting amped up thinking they have shot against us. Let them instead think about and fear the physical beating that s forthcoming Only then. LasVegasIrish 0
Two things I noticed: ND runs bubble screens and those curl flat routes all the time, even with Weis. It would be nice if they faked one of those curl routes once in awhile. I remember at least two times last night where the Purdue defender jumped the route. Different play calls need to be introduced, as well as adding in a pump and go.
Franco 0
yup..pretty predictbale..even I can call them from my couch if Tommy is under center, it's a run like 95% of the time...the other 5%, it's a bootleg and they ALWAYS empty out the backfield on 3rd down... Like the ide aof throw it deep. only in the second half when we threw it deep did their CBs stop playing so tight. Maybe we need to throw it deep off a setup with Tommy under center, play action then deep.
Rocketsan 881
Wait until teams start jumping Tommy's hand signal for the ball snap when he's in shotgun with an empty backfield...
IrishShamrock16 0
and they ALWAYS empty out the backfield on 3rd down... OMG I KNOW!! This happened all of the time last year as well. Situation: 3rd and inches...3rd and a foot...you get the picture. Nobody in the backfield...everybody knows we're passing...and we pass...incomplete. Ok now it gets worse...4rth down...and we're going for it?? Empty backfield again...pass again. We're at or near midfield on many of these 4rth down attempts. And I understand the field position game and punting may not yield anything positive for us with the way our kicking game has been...yada yada...and then in hindsight we should've just went for it on 4rth down cuz our opponent has the ball at the 38 anyways due to a shank...or a crappy punt with bad coverage and a great return. I get it. But the point is we're running stupid plays on critical downs. If its 3rd and short, and I assume our coach knows that if we don't get the 1st down, we're going for it again on 4rth. So why are we running back to back empty backfield plays?? And what's crazy is the fact that we somehow manage to gain a first down quite a bit. So I know im contradicting my point, but soooo many times we just barely, or luckily get the 1st down. I always think how lucky we were to make that tough catch and hold onto the ball. What if we didn't get it? Why give our opponent the ball at midfield...why have our QB and perhaps the team get down on themselves cuz they didn't convert...why give the opponent a reason to be celebratory...why put wind in their sail because of our stupidity...and more importantly, why wouldn't we just POUND the ball on both 3rd and 4rth down to pick up less than a yard...? Just smash it. If we cant pick up the small yardage needed to obtain a 1st down on TWO plays, then I understand why we throw it. But that's not good...and I don't believe that. Our lineman are too good, and our backs are too good. We'll get it. And if we don't, then shame on us...or maybe the other team just made a great play off the line to get some push. But the empty backfield on 3rd and short, we should at least have a RB behind the line to keep the defense and mainly the LB's somewhat honest ya know. I always thought this last year, but if I'm going to complain during a great season, then I'm just being picky...but it really did worry me. Still...its still happening this year, and we obviously don't have the team this year. They just don't look good...anywhere. The only somewhat bright spot is Tommy Rees and Cam McDaniel, Jaylon Smith and Cole Luke playing early in their careers on a defense that returned the majority of its' players, also the fact that we're luckily 2-1....and we know we have some really talented players...and hopefully we start playing better. Purdue's recruits compared to Notre Dame's, well its not even comparable. Just based off of talent alone, that game should've never been that difficult...and it was a dog-fight for us, which seems to be a common theme against less talented teams. But yes, the empty backfield on 3rd down scares the crap outta me. That was a really good point whoever brought that up. Hopefully it changes next game. Haha I doubt it, because I've been wishing for the change every game for the past 2 seasons. I still love our guys tho! Can't wait till MSU!! If we lose though, then we'll start to see a slide with recruits. We won't land some of the players we desperately need; Watkins, Juju, Tranquill which is sad but we have no other LB's looking at us, Elam, Holley, Malachi, Mama...ya'll know the gang. I do like Tranquill tho...I think he'll fit in well...just odd that at this point in the season our top LB option is a consensus 3 star.
