die4irish
BK states that you cant run with 8 guys in the box. How does he know if he NEVER tries it. It gets tiring listening to him always saying it's what the other team dictates what we run. What ever happened to this is what we are going to do so lets see you stop us. Stop overthinking the game plan for what the opponent might do and game plan for what we want to do.

Stacking 8 in the box sure does open up some running room if our elusive backs can make it to the secondary.. Just ask AP.

You mean like the Okl game last year when Woods broke the line and was gone??? Wont see it this year.

NDhoosier
8 in the box, you pass. That is beyond common knowledge...
JTennant
8 in the box, you pass. That is beyond common knowledge... Agree. Unless you're Stanford and you have three tackles and some TE & H back (no WR) and they just say bring it beeyotch.
K_C_L
But Michigan barely ever had 8 in the box against us.
corysold
8 in the box, you pass. That is beyond common knowledge... There is no reason you can't occasionally run vs an 8 man box. Would I poind against it all day just to say I did? No. But an 8 man box vs a TE set leaves two defenders unaccounted for. One would be strong side, one would be weak. So you are rying in your RB to make a defender miss. Sure, there is some risk of negative and no gain plays, but there is also a chance of some big plays, if your RB can make a defender miss. Or you're Alabama playing us last year? They averaged 7.1 yards per carry when ND had eight or more defenders in the box(that's an actual stat...) JTennant
But Michigan barely ever had 8 in the box against us. They brought them down after we went empty. They would go ahead and show their play. I think BK might have been trying to lie to himself to make excuses for our lack of running game. Remember the first and 10 throw to TJ in the corner that was barely incomplete? A catch in bounds puts as at the two and hopefully we pound it in to tie the game at 34-34. Or the third down play that was almost picked. Davaris was open, it just appears Tommy was late with the throw and it was inaccurate. I think this play-calling argument is fueled by whether or not the play is successful and not whether it was the "correct" play call. WeaverND
Lack of execution does not equal bad play call. No, but asking players to do things that they are borderline incapable of doing is bad playcall. Tommy should NEVER be asked to throw the ball 40+ times, much less 50. Now if we had Peyton Manning back there it'd be a different story, but we don't. You coach to your teams strengths.

Want to share this with you guys. http://notredameplays.tumblr.com You can see here Davaris was open for the first down, Tommy just made a poor throw. Do we run a draw here or something else for Tommy? Is Tommy expected to make this throw? You guys can be the judge. And yes, you can't argue with the number of passes to runs. But I believe some deeper research could help alleviate that a little. ND threw the ball 16 times in the fourth quarter, beginning the quarter down 14. They did have the GAIII 16 yard run in there when there was six in the box and safeties playing deep. Nice execution. But if we run the ball two plays, get stuffed and leave ourselves in 3rd and eight, people would be saying "LET'S RUN THE BALL." ultimately, maybe the game speed and style went in a direction we didn't want to be in. But players still have to make plays, guys. And it just seems as if Michigan players made more plays than ND players did Saturday night. Is MICH better than ND? I don't think they would beat ND every single time.
