Rattlesnake 54
From Adam Rittenburg's article on ESPN.com.. "[At first, it was,] 'We're different, we're going to be what we are, we're never going to change,'" Davie recalled. "Then, all of a sudden, it became, 'We're going to build a football building, we're going to go pay the coaches what everybody else is paying, we're going to go recruit that pool of guys everybody else is recruiting, and we're going to become flashier.' I don't think there's any question that is the case. We had a hard time competing against the flashy Michigan and the flashy Ohio State, in a lot of things: facilities, style, who we recruited, all those things. "From the outside, it looks like everything's equal, whether it's facilities, how flashy the uniforms are. Notre Dame came out in gold shoes the other day. The [players'] pants are a flashier gold. The marketing piece of it is a real piece. I see a difference. I appreciate that. It's what they had to do." Added Davie: "Notre Dame is now, to me, Michigan." Go coach the Lobos, you turd. EddieAngel 602
As if both the Notre Dame and scUM fanbase did not detest this guy enough already. He is obviously still more than a little butthurt about his dismissal. Sour grapes, what would Lou say?
Paulo1300 0
i mean its kinda true.. we are recruiting the same people as everyone else now i dont know about all that marketing crap, but we have definitely changed our recruiting profile as long as we keep graduating the players (without cheating them through), i dont see anything wrong with it Edited September 6, 2013 by Paulo1300
Jersey Irish 207
The problem with BOOB Davie is that he never got "IT" about ND. He was a horrible choice to replace Lou. After he was let go, he was never offered a job for years on end, until this reteirment gig in New Mexico

Dayton_Domer 0
Why on earth is he wasting time talking about this game...his team lost to UTSA last weekend. Maybe he should reallocate time to his current team and not the team he coached 12 years ago.
SpeedsterX 751
Bob WAS a good DC, not a good head coach but I don't blame Bob for ND's fall. Bob was just a bump in the road. Lou was getting old and people were tired of the option after a few lackluster seasons. Bob filled in as head coach when Lou or his wife got sick and he passed more with success and people loved it. Everyone clamored for Davie to succeed Lou and it happened. That's when we found out that we took a step back. Some people wish we would have promoted Urban Meyer. The fall for Notre Dame was those years of "sanctions" in human form, Tyrone Willingham. It has now taken 2 competent coaching regimes to get back to even being thought of as a power house again. Notre Dame with Willingham went through far more damage and pain than USC's sanctions will ever do to them. Thank God for Father Jenkins, Jack Swarbrick ad Brian Kelly. REMND 0
Just when I was starting to feel more generous toward him. He was a good DC but not ND head coaching material in my estimation. It wasn't necessarily because of lapses in recruiting, schemes, game prep, management or assistants. He was a very good coach. He was just the wrong guy at any time to be the ND head coach. Maybe at some other culture he would fit but not ND. I just like him better when he is not trying to speak for or about ND.
Bubba of the Lake 0
I'm glad Bob Davie is coaching..... It keeps him from being on TV on a weekly basis, where he was a constant reminder of the lost years of ND Football. At least now he is hidden from view at New Mexico. No offense intended to the good people of New Mexico.

Parseghians theorem 0
Explain to me how we've "become" Michigan? sorry. dont think we are more michigan. but ND has done a lot of upgrading since davie. and those things help with recruiting
Rocketsan 873
College football in general has evolved dramatically since the late 90's, not sure why he thinks he was being held back...maybe he's been riding the hot tub time machine... ErickJD08 0
I think the game has changed really in that the head coach is more of a CEO than anything else. All those weights holding ND down in the past should have been addressed by Davie/HC. If there is a missing marketing piece or something, its the head coach's responsibility to address it. Maybe it takes a new head coach to say "I'm not coming unless you do X, Y, and Z". But a sitting coach can say "I'm leaving unless you do X, Y, and Z." Yes, Davie is right in pointing out the changes that were made to help the program but he also pointed out the things he didn't do and the things he didn't think about doing during his tenure to help the chances of making a better program. Rattlesnake 54
The only thing I'm taking away from this article is this : If Robert had supplied his teams with golden shoes, they would have won.
