FaithInIrish Forever 5,570
I like to study film before ND plays each opponent. The selection is a bit limited this early but I have a few points of reference <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/8mz-dh_fgFc?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/POD_4MflXo4?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/uGCFzMS3ZcI?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/tR5U4ocyf94?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/ffPtIUMESUE?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Thats a start! FaithInIrish Forever 5,570
Michigan is obviously very tough at home 14-0 Under Brady Hoke in Ann Arbor Al Borgess offensive coordinator prefers to run the west coast offense. However first with Shoelace and Now with Gardener they've used alot of Shotgun based offense, but they also will go into 2 backs and run play action as well. Play action is a huge part of what Michigan Offense does under Borgess whether in the shotgun or not. Our linebackers will have to play better against play action this week. My too buzz word Cliche's for the week are play action and contain we must do both to slow down UM. Gardener runs better than the guy from temple but not as good as Shoelace of course, but he will riip off a 20 yard run if you let him. Gardener throws picks if we can contain him and get pressure in his face. Defensively its a guy we know in Greg Mattison. Very creative guy. Can devise creative zones coverages and blitzes. Rees has got to get us in the right look if he drops 8 we need to run the ball and of course if he stuffs the box full we have to block the blitz and go deep with the passing game. ST blocked a punt last week. Worthy opponent we will know a lot about our 2013 team after this game.
NDhoosier 1,336
I still think we should force him to stand in the pocket and throw. He is not the type of QB who will succeed in that regard. In my opinion, he is taller version of Denard and remember, Denard had to have the two biggest games of his life to beat us in 2010 and 2011. I thought Kelly and Diaco had a good gameplan against them last year, hopefully it works again, I just hope our offense is more productive than it was last year against them. A Denard like defense does seem to be key. I thought that Conor Reilly's yardage when forced out of the pocket was their offense. Who is the spy? I figure Jaylon or a safety. Maybe Grace. I don't feel good about Carlo or Fox

Jommybone 0
The CMU highlights show very few impressive UM plays. Full of big plays as a result of CMU guys p'ing themselves. I am less worried for having watched it. Thanks.

I don't feel good about Carlo or Fox I think of Gardener as somewhere between Denard and Golson. Gardener to my eyes is not as fast as Denard, throws better than Denard but does not throw as well as Golson. We agree that containment is key. Preferably with Nix pushing the center back in Gardeners operating space I want Gardener having to read coverage all night. I think he'll make a few mistakes that I hope we can intercept. I worry about the quick slant pass off zone read play action he's pretty good at that and also throws an accurate deep ball. I'd like him to be forced into the intermediate zone and hav tight windows to fit balls in thats where hes very average.
Morgandonor 44
Both teams moved the ball well against their respective opponents. The reality is what team is fools gold. I would like to think that there is nothing foolish about our defense but the offense we will have to wait and see. Go Irish

Add in the fact that I don't see Michigan's receiving core consistently beating our secondary, I like our defense in this situation. Just watch this past game against Central Michigan. Gardener stares down receivers blatantly. His other receivers couldn't get open. He ran out of necessity, not because its what he wanted to do. I think that is the key to all of this. Gardener can run, but if he has to run, we have the ability to cover their receivers and still spy. We did it last year, and we are in an even better position in the secondary this year to do it again.

ND consistently beat Temple in all one on one match ups. They were able to be play very vanilla and just out athlete Temple, especially in the passing game. I mean We ran simple bubble screens for huge plays because of Niklas' physicality. Gardener, on passing plays, had to use his legs because receivers weren't getting open. Now I understand Gardener is supposed to use his legs in that situation. But Look at a guy like Braxton Miller who we all know can run, but didn't run for most of the game because his receivers continually beat Buffalo. OklahomaIrish 0
Last year we sucked on offense against Michigan. It was Golson's worst outing. This year, even though we are on the road I feel more confident offensively. Tommy has been in the big house before and played very well except for some crucial mistakes. I don't see him making those mistakes this year. He is one confident quarterback. So basically we will be better, maybe much better on offense and that will be huge. Are offense excites me as much as the Floyd/Tate Combination did. We have 5 or 6 running backs that can play pretty darn well a QB that knows how to read coverages. I feel like we should score plenty..

I lean towards the former, but I wouldn't be surprised if he went with the committee with what we have to work with overall.

Right now if I ranked the top 3 based on performance it would be: 1. Carlisle 2. Cam McDaniel 3 GAIII Now the top 3 will be pushed all season by: 4A. Greg Bryant 4B. Terean Folston So much that the top 3 might be 1. Carlisle 2. Bryant or Folston 3. Cam McDaniel Sorry GAIII, I seriously wonder if he could be a CB or Safety. WR is pretty loaded and I just don't see him getting the message at running back. by seasons end

I know your angle, GAIII is Bigger, Stronger, Faster My angle is Cam will always be more reliable than GAIII. Runs lower, with more authority Amir replaces GAIII's home run ability. GAIII WOULD NOT replace Cam's reliability IMHO..

He will not be flashy but he gets the job done and rarely gets negative yards!
