CTHindman
Just watched the first half of the Temple game again. I really over reacted yesterday. 1st- I got down on Jaylon a little. That kids coverage is why he didn't make a ton of tackles. They had to throw it away from his receiver, because he was in his pocket all night. He will get an interception against Michigan. Mark it down. 2nd- I am blaming Massa for the missed field goal. I think his hand was in the way. Hence the knuckle ball. 3rd- Temple was very well coached. I think I heard he was a product of Paterno. Offensively and defensively they were ready to play ND. 4th- There ONLY td was because of three really stupid penalties on our defense. I credit those to it being the first game. Most importantly though I think I am falling in love with this offense. They scored at will. I counted only 3 really poor passes by Tommy in the 1st half. Had DD not pulled up hurt, he would have had 3 first half tds.
ChampionshipDefense
When you rewatch the game its not nearly as bad as people have made it out to be. Penalties hurt our defense. Reilly's unknown as a QB hurt us. In fact, he played great. He was accurate. On time, and went through his progressions greatly. He is going to have a good year. They were a physical team that played well. I think their coach has a bright future. He eliminated our Dline's ability to impact the game. But even them playing that well, we still shut down their outside recievers, and didn't break in the redzone. I can't wait to really open it up! While I agree, this is exactly what we were saying after Purdue last year. They were better than everyone thought, and that they would vie for the B10 Championship. They actually were mediocre and a 6-7 team. We'll see. I think they were good too, but time will tell.
jordanj56
That's a good point about Jaylon.. It did seem as if they almost always ran their plays to the opposite side of the field from him. I think once we turn up the complexity in our defensive schemes against Michigan, we will see the dominate defense we have all grown accustomed too! I'm not saying they are going to win anything. They may never play this well again. But for a team coming in the Notre Dame stadium for the first time, with a QB starting for the first time, with a coach in his first game as a head coach, they played very well. They executed their game plan. Didn't turn the ball over. They controlled what they could. X's and O's didn't lose the game. Nor did their decision making. We were just bigger, faster, stronger. They didn't even commit many penalties. If ND does all those things they did all season, we would run the table. We have the talent to do that. They don't. Thats the difference of being Temple and ND. A near flawless execution for them gets them less of a blow out. They might lose the rest of their games, but if they execute their gameplan like they did today their is no reason they shouldn't win some games this season. That's all I'm saying. nd1989
I think we'll do ok. I actually do hope Temple is good. I think we can be realy good, we just need to figure a few things out. MI will be the first real test.

I was very impressed by the qb play and schemes overall. They didn't seem overly intimidated and didn't roll over or give up after down 14-0 very early. Their coach seemed surprisingly very confident in the first half from his body language. Not quite the pushover I was expecting, at all. Think there is an unwritten rule that ND can't play a complete creampuff. Maybe one day, but not yesterday much to many's surprise.

That's why I think its so tough to turn a program around. They schemed well, and executed well, but still didn't belong on the same field as ND. Players don't always respond well to losses. Rhule did a great job with his team, and if he can keep them bought into his system, I think he might be a rising star as a coach.

You can't read too much into the first game anyway. These are 20 year olds, also, not NFL veterans. Now, after Michigan, we'll have a far clearer picture of the 2013 Irish. 1qa
ND observations 1. Tommy & Offense will be solid... can improve 2. Manti > Carlo + Fox ... really miss his leadership and energy on the field. Thinking he's what made the front 7 last year so so solid... he had the LBs in the right place, and he made all the other plays. 3. Collinsworth is clearly the better safety; he gets the D scheme better. I expect he will improve. Shumate still on the learning curve. 4. Solid DBs 5. DL looked a little disoriented / rusty, but it could also be that the the LBs were not doing what they did last year. 6. Need a kicker.. Tausch should not be PK - even if Massa muffed a hold, a bit 7 WRs are strong and deep. 8. TJ will make us positive on the PR ledger 9. RB Rank - Amir, Cam (but not every down), Bryant, GAIII, Folston (for now) Temple Observations: 1. Their QB is good - he's a gamer. First start and he wasn't rattled (too much)... played the dink&dunk well, and also has an arm. 2. Temple played the best scheme they could against us. 3. OL Center was surprisingly better than expected... largely contained Nix (with help). 4. Their LB Manksomething was solid too. We didn't blow them out.. Temple played up, ND played neutral, IMO. Michigan will tell us a lot about ND this season
OklahomaIrish
I just watched the first half again and I feel a lot better. It easily could have gone to 28-0. DeVaris made a catch that was ruled out of bounds. I was thinking it was in. It was so close and DeVaris made a beautiful catch. The next drive was when DeVaris got the groin pull. That was a touchdown. Pure bad luck on those two drives. Temple didn't stop us. Didn't watch the second half, but we surely could have scored on that last possession if we needed to. Obviously holding back.....a ton. Only one pass to the tight ends, didn't play DeVaris in the second half, extremely conservative play calling in the second half. We will be much more inspired Saturday night. This is my kind of thread. Good job CTHindman and some good observations by the guys.

OK, according to your definition of how many times "Temple stopped us". How many times did we "stop" Temple? They tripped over themselves many times. NDhoosier
4. Their LB Manksomething was solid too. Matakevich is his name, only a sophomore. Guy had to have like 15 tackles. He was all over the place.

OklahomaIrish
OK, according to your definition of how many times "Temple stopped us". How many times did we "stop" Temple? They tripped over themselves many times. I only re-watched the first half and our offense was basically unstoppable except for some bad luck. I do have concerns about a team that ran on us and we got very little pressure on the quarterback, but our defense is pretty much a known quantity. They will come to play against Michigan and we will work out some of the problems. Jaylon will line up in the right spot. Grace will play more. Shumate will play better or get benched. nd1989
Shumate will play better or get benched. I just don't think Shumate is a Safety yet. They can put him there, but that doesn't mean he's ready to play the position. He should be the backup and play in nickel/dime situations until he learns. Safety is like the QB of the defense. He needs to be very clear what he's doing before the ball is snapped. It takes time.
Kid Gloves
I watched the first half again too. I'm not worried about the offense much, other than Rees' lack of elusiveness compared to Golson but it is what it is and there's nothing that can be done about that. If he doesn't turn the ball over we will be fine. I am worried about the defense though. Our Front Seven didn't impress me at all. I hope it was just sand bagging for Michigan, but they have to do a lot more if we want to win in the big house.
Irish Chris
I'm definitely not as worried about the offense as I was a week ago. We need to keep in mind that Kelly shut it down pretty early in the 3rd. Rees could have had 400 yards and 3tds reeeeeeal easy. What would people say about how crappy Tommy looked with that stat line. As soon as GAIII scored halfway through the 3rd, it was cruise control. Game over, mission accomplished, let's get ready for Meatchicken and not show them **** at the same time.
da coach
Collinsworth made zero tackles...how his play is a positive takeaway from Saturday to some of you makes me question what game you were watching... Call Shumate a step down from Zeke is one thing, but to say Collinsworth outplayed him is a bit silly... Max Redfield, get ready
WeaverIrish
Watching it again it seems like our defense did better than we think. Temples QB was forced to make perfect passes which was hard for him. Our corners were on their recievers very hard. Our running backs all did fine even GAIII Our Receivers were on point. Tommy still sacred me he didn't turn it over but he made mistakes that may have gone differently or meant more against a better team. I honestly think that Kelly told the DL just not get hurt early. Our OL was fine. Tell me what you guys think.
