Safeties and linebackers

The middle linebackers and safeties looked real bad today. Were both poor in pass coverage and looked a step slow. Carlo and Fox are too slow to keep up with the better teams with speed... period. We could tell we'll have some growing pains with Grace but his physical skills are far superior too the other two.

Shumate looked awful as well, and Farley did nothing too spectacular at all. We heard Redfield has a ways to go but the sooner he comes along and plays the better. Looks like our replacements for Teo and Motta are huge downgrades at the moment but it's the first game so time will tell. Not sure what you guys think but these groups were the biggest disappointment today IMO.

I watched three of Central Michigans drives today and Michigans defense looked much faster than ours, the flew to the ball. If the defense continues to play like today this team is looking at 4 or 5 losses. The d-line wasn't good but I'll give them a pass, and props to the corners I don't think they threw to Russell's side once.

I think they got sucked into the Play Action too much because they were having quite a few guys in their face. Our Dline played very poorly early, without any discipline.

If the Dline plays better I think it will be much easier for the LB's to be affective in pass coverage, because they can see whats coming easier.

I do think Grace should start over Carlo. Grace is faster, better in space, just less experienced.

Fox also needs to stop trying to superman over defenders. He's gonna really get hurt, and we cant afford anyone in the middle to get hurt.

Maybe Councel can try the Will?

Despite that, they held Temple to about a 50% completion percentage. 225 yards on 43 attempts. No play got behind them. Pass rush seemed anemic.

We may have a ways to go but that is a nice outcome to start from.

My World wind tour of the boards suggests Grace did show much more athleticism than the other two. I have a feeling he will be more visible as time goes on. He just needs real game experience to increase his growth curve I am hoping.

Colinsworth I am confident will get better. I may be a Polly about this. Maybe in regards to Grace as well. Expecting intuition improvement sounds pretty reasonable though considering how long the staff has worked with them.

Maybe we took these guys today a little for granted (easy win). We won the game most importantly. We held them to 6 points. But, we looked really, really slow IMO. I am very concerned to be honest. I am also even more concerned with the pass rush against a bad team. They stoned us over and over. Granted they were trying to throw it as fast as they can all game. But, we didn't have good pass rush at all.

Got the win, but if we think we can play this way against good offenses---we will get scored on a lot.

We can get better though. I think as the season goes along Tuitt will get back to his old speed.

But, we got the win---and we all love the Irish!

Dink and dunk is designed I believe to negate a pass rush. Good game plan.

225 yards passing on 43 attempts with 6 points to show for it. Maybe a good game plan by us as well.

Just watched the game again, I agree on some of the dink and dunk. But, I counted 7 plays in the first half (with 4 more ify) that wasn't dink and dunk and we got stoned.

Still worried. Day/Tuitt/Shembo/ishaq need to do better. Tried to bull rush a lot without much luck.

I know it is 1st game and I maybe too critical. But, bad pass rush really.

Just look at 8:33 and 8:25 to go in the 2nd quarter and Reilly had a ton of time to throw. That is just two plays against a weak offensive line and we got zero pass rush. Too critical maybe, but watching the game a second time I am now even more concerned with the lack of pass rush.

The positive thing is that at least we wont over pursue/rush the QB against good running QB's so we can be more at home when they run.

We did hold them to 6 points, that is still impressive.

I've actually been thinking Councel to the inside would be a good idea. With Jaylon holding down the dog I don't see why he doesn't get a shot. Him and Grace would be two tall guys on the inside with speed, huge stepup from Carlo and Fox.

After watching this game a few things come to mind....one...i dont believe we knew what to expect from them.....believe were strictly run oriented last year....two short yardage pass coverage has always been our achilles heel.....luckily not many our opponents thrive off it sans oklahoma and stanford....lastly bout time we had this kind of opener...errors will be corrected

It looks like we are going to waste Jaylon by playing him the same way they played Spond. Its hard to wreak havoc playing that position

Meh. Jalon is a FR and played in his first game. We'll see. i think you'll see someone doing more than containing the edge....
