Big23Head
Per Sampson: Apparently Lo Wood is deciding soon if he wants to transfer or not. Josh Atkinson is cross training at slot but also has considered transferring. Cole Luke has passed them and apparently Devin Butler is not too far behind Cole. tom3408
Yeah about due for someone else to go, at current pace we will have tons of scholly's next season lol. Kids your one injury away from playing and even if you don't you will get a degree from the University of Notre Dame! But what do I know. jamirish4732
Hypothetically if they both go, which at this rate it wouldn't shock me it opens 2 more schollies. Would they try to bring in two more CB's to replace them or split them up to build more depth elsewhere like QB or LB?
TheRizz
I think we would look at two corners this cycle if they both transfer
Katzenboyer
Again, this is why ND needs to take 2 or 3 extra guys each recruiting cycle. There is ALWAYS this kind of turnover.
REMND
I heard this on yesterdays power hour as well. It is tough to work for years and then have a freshman pass you who is not even an early entry. Says a lot about Cole's ability though. Lo should fight it out because he has the experience to win the battle and also is just an injury away from getting significant playing time in any event. If it doesn't work out, he can go the Dayne Crist route since Lo is a senior. Atkinson is a junior. If he wants starter minutes he most likely will have to transfer because the younger talent seems pretty impressive and has passed him. It would be tough to be separated from his twin brother though who many think will have a break season. I want both to stay but playing time is really critical to some of these guys and we do want players who are really driven in that regard. Also, like how staying reaffirms our belief that our school offers more than gridiron glory to its players. If they leave, the extra scholies I believe can be put to good use. We lose experience that is lower on the depth chart for young potential that might be higher on the depth chart when they mature.

Or, stay this year, get backup minutes, and possibly start if there's an injury, academics, etc. Then, graduate at year's end and transfer free and clear with no restrictions to where, and no need to sit out a year. I can certainly see either making more sense. Josh is in a tougher spot. If not for his brother being here, I would think the decision would be easy. However, it also appears that the coaching staff is giving him every opportunity to play, somehow, but cross-training him in other spots. Soko
It makes absolutely no sense for Lo Wood to transfer at this stage and the depth would take a hit. He can do whatever he likes next year but we need corners who can play and apparently the coaches think he can. Has Atkinson made a play yet in his 2 years? While athletically gifted he would not be missed and his scholarship for next year would be gladly spent on somebody else.

Exactly, Lo can transfer with a degree from ND after the season without having to sit out and have a chance to play this year, or transfer before he gets the degree and have no chance to play. Seems like an easy decision to me.

davislove
I understood GA3 giving up track but Josh should have stuck with it. He was always a "throw in" recruit when ND wanted his brother. We always talk about how the junior year is when guys start to "get it" and step up. Well it also could be the year of the reality check where they see themselves not moving up the depth chart and younger guys starting to pass them by. You come into school with 20 or so other guys vowing to take the program to new heights together. A couple years later you see some being talked about as early draft candidates, some are now veteran starters and contributors while you're still in the kiddie pool. I get the frustration. Josh should play offense, let him run straight and fast. Another thing, some people tend to think that freeing up another scholarship means that whomever they use it on will be better than the person who left. Newsflash people. Thats not the case. it's always a crapshoot.
SDIrishFan
I assume this info comes from the II podcast. If so, that sounded like complete speculation on Sampson's part, not actual knowledge or discussion from a coach/player. But, it does seem to be the natural knee jerk reaction these days. If I get passed on the depth chart, I'll just go somewhere else. Seems silly to me unless you believe you have a legit shot at making it to the league. Which, if you're a senior being passed on the depth chart by a true freshmen, do you think that's a legit shot?
nd1989
This HAS to be a knee jerk reaction. It would make zero sense. To me, it sounds like an upset young man, and this is his first reaction. Once he goes thru the facts, he'll realize staying and play this season has no downside.

ND isn't the only school that offers a quality education. Easy for us to say we wouldn't give up the ND education... hard for them to give up being on the field for one last season or two.
