nd1989
So looking at the eligibility chart for linebacker, it looks like we lose 4 LBs after this year (Shembo, Spond, Fox, Calabrese) and possibly 5 the year after (Ishaq, Moore, Grace, Rabasa, Councell). Some of the 5 could stay for a fifth year, but that shouldn;t be the plan. So what's the plan? We probably needed 4 this year (only have three coming in), and we need 4 for next year (right now have 1).

Well I'm pretty sure Spond can stay for a fifth since he didn't play till last year so that's one more. Your right though it would be best if we got 4 this year, any less than 3 would give us depth issues in the future.
LasVegasIrish
Hopefully they start making a strong push for Devante Downs, as he seems highly interested.
jarious
Spond is in his final year of eligibility -- he saw action in 2010, 2011, 2012 -- mostly on special teams the first two years. The below chart shows potential years of eligibility, and shifts guys down if they can take a fifth year. LB recruiting has been pretty sparse since the 2011 class (Ishaq class). Essentially, ND has 6 LBs in its last 3 recruiting classes so far (2012-2014), which clearly is not enough. On the flip side, they preserved alot of eligibility out the 2011 class haul. So, you still have Grace/Rabasa/Councell/Okwara with 3 years of eligibility each. And yes, fifth years should be considered part of the plan. Considering each of the 3 linebackers in the latest class may see burn this year (Smith, Deeb, Randolph), it does highlight the need to bring in a full class this season -- and not sure where Bonner really fits in. But that's consistent with most of what has been said here. INSIDE LINEBACKERS 2013: Carlo Calabrese, Dan Fox 2014: Kendall Moore 2015: Jarrett Grace, Anthony Rabasa, Joe Schmidt 2016: Michael Deeb, Doug Randolph 2017: (Greer Martini) OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS 2013: Prince Shembo, Danny Spond 2014: Ishaq Williams 2015: Ben Councell, Romeo Okwara 2016: Jaylon Smith 2017: (Jonathan Bonner)
Big23Head
Simply put the front 7 recruiting will go to NSD. No worries though. There is a lot of flexibility with the guys ND currently has committed plus others being looked at. Jaylen Johnson, Nyles Morgan, Andrew Williams, Lorenzo Carter, Yeargin and possibly Downs into the mix. Potentially Luatua there too. It goes to show when you almost completely whiff on the LB position in a 3-4 defense, that it leaves quite a gap. But you're right. If we recruit flexible players we can move them around easily as FR and fill holes. Because one thing I don't think we want to do is fill our entire two deep with 5th year LBs, just because we organizationally didn't recruit well. NDhoosier
We need LBs really bad in the class of 2014, but I have faith in the staff, the depth chart is obvious to us fans, so the staff is probably already got a plan under way. Still, I think we need 3-4 LBs for this class and I know we have a couple tweeners in Bonner and Blankenship, but I still see them both putting on weight when they get to college and fitting more of the DE role. AlabamaDuck
We have not seen much of Rabasa because of injuries but is suppose to be 100% now. He was highly rated by our coaches when he committed.

nd1989
I believe Rabasa was moved to DE in the spring. seriously? You'd think we have enough DEs. Unless he just doesn'tget the LB position....
REMND
seriously? You'd think we have enough DEs. Unless he just doesn'tget the LB position.... I think they are just trying to find the right position for him to gt on the field. The have tried Cat, MLB and DE now. I think his best position is rush DE. He has to beat out Shembo, Ishaq, and Okwara for that. This is what depth creates. Sometimes talented players will not see the field. smaster
:banplease:So looking at the eligibility chart for linebacker, http://healthllife.com/images/images/16.gif Thanks for your invasion. :banplease: On another note, why do people (human OR spambot) start a paragraph with the word "So"? It's a word that flows naturally from a previous point, yet it's become cool to open up a conversation. Oh, the issues I must deal with: chemical weapons in Syria, civil unrest in Egypt, conjunctions in the wrong place...

smaster
.....ending a phrase with a preposition... Ah yes, the most perpetuated myth in grammar education. http://oxforddictionaries.com/words/ending-sentences-with-prepositions BUT I "DIGEST" and will set the course right: If we get enough DEs in this class (such thing?), my guess is that our coaches envision some movement between positions. Heck, I can't even say what definitive position several of our current guys play -- think Rabasa, Shembo, Ishaq. Trouble is, the interested DE pool isn't exactly fat this year, either. They don't make their own... If there's a grammatical error, it's on the original author. Bots don't have original thoughts.

BTW I think you just hurt the bot's feelings; please consider praying for his poor soul. Based on size alone, would the staff picture guys like Andrew Williams, Lorenzo Carter, and Jaylen Johnson to have LB potential as opposed to DL?
