If I'm not mistaken, ND doesn't redshirt, but grants players a fifth year of eligibility if they don't see playing time during their first year.

Typically, only medical redshirts are announced....and even then, I do not think ND announces it like others do.

ย

If a player doesn't get playing time throughout the season, he is basically redshirted....though, as mentioned above, it is just a matter of the kid possibly being given a 5th year of eligibility.

redshirts aren't announced. It's more of a situation where if when the year is over for the freshmen (or eligible upper classmen) and you haven't played than you redshirted.

ohhh ok good, thanks guys

ND does NOT redshirt!

The NCAA allows a student athlete 5 years to play 4. ND allows a player in good academic standing that has a remaining year of eligibility (a 5th year) to file for another year at the university. As this is still an academic scholarship it requires the Coach is blessing but a faculty commitee makes the determination of who's accepted.

ย

Hence there is no guarantee at ND for a student athlete that doesn't play his freshman year that he will get to play his 5th year at ND. He has to meet academic goals to make it happen. Rather than take Ball Room Dancing ND student athletes pursue a post graduate degree in that 5th year and they're expected to get it.

Interestingly a "redshirt" question was asked of CW at yesterday's practice interview. Here's my transcription of the exchange:

ย

Q. I know you're not afraid to play freshman but with the numbers you have now is there any consideration to having some around for a 5th year.

ย

CW. It's a bit of a touchy subject. Because we graduate everybody on a 4 year plan, the 5th year is determined when the 5th year comes around. Because we don't talk about the term redshirt, we talk 5th year or 5th year senior I think you go by what you see. If there's no reason to put him on the field you don't put him on the field to waste him. Parcells used to say โ€œHe needs a year in Joplinโ€ But nobody here knows what that means. There's guys here that definitely need a year in Joplin!

Hey Brian Welcome aboard :D

Hey Bryan, welcome to the DD.

Good thread, I was always curious about how ND went about granting a fifth year, and why I never heard of anyone being redshirted.

the other good thing about this thread, is it means Barry will be suiting up on the 16th!

16th? Of August or for the Michican game Sept 16th?

ย

Keep in mind the NCAA restricts the number of dressed athletes for home and away games. Even then players may dress but not get in a game as a freshman. Charlie will play them when they ready and when they're needed. With Hord out for the season, I expect Gallup will get on the field.
